2018 Standings and Playoff Race Discussion

All this said...

We need to at the least split today and tomorrow or the division will be a severe uphill climb (though it already is, cause, Cubs).

We are in fantastic shape in the wild card, with games in hand... using the variable games behind proposed here, and actual games behind, as well as games in hand. We just need to watch out for St Louis - like always. I wish they would just go away like they were supposed to... sigh.

It's like they always say - take care of your own business and things will happen for you. We need to win series after series, and avoid another big losing streak , and at the very least we will have a play in wild card game.

Good thing MLB doesn't have ties like hockey and soccer. Debate about how many games behind would set a new record for number of pages.

I don't watch hockey or soccer, but in football (real football, aka NFL) it gets really crazy there because even if you factor out the possibility of tie games, you can have the same record but be technically ahead due to tie breaking rules for the standings.

Honestly, I think it takes a team of legal experts to determine NFL standings at the end of some seasons.

Is the NFL still playing? Dead to me...

That's all? You watch everything else? Impressive. Thanks for sharing.

Personally I don't watch hockey, golf, dog shows, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee and numerous other things I'm probably not even aware of. It would be exhausting if I had to share that information constantly to all the people I meet. Kudos for keeping on top of that with your disinterest in the NFL, that's some real dedication right there.

Something I hadn't really thought about but we're 30-32 since going 37-22. So we've been a .500 team for a really long time now.

It looks like we're going to end up somewhere close to where I thought. I think I said 88 wins but don't recall exactly, and that we'd fight for a WC all year but miss it in the end.

I just want someone to explain if, say, a team finishes 85-77, are they EIGHT games over .500 or just FOUR? :tongue

[sarcasm]I think we can all agree that after today the cubs are 9 games above 500 at 68-50 and the brewers are 14 games above 500 at 68-54. Therefor the brewers are in first place by 5 games.[/sarcasm]

Remember what Yoda said:

I don't think you can assume that the Brewers will continue on a .500 pace the rest of the way. The roster is good enough to get hot over an extended period if the bullpen issues correct themselves and the starters pitch to their seasonal norms. The recent bullpen struggles and some shakiness in the rotation could also make .500 very difficult.

5 back in the loss column is 5 back. I know on the internet we are supposed to argue everything but this is not a fact that is up for that treatment.

The loss column is all that matters in the playoff chase.

6 games into the season if one team is 1-5 and the other is 1-0 the loss column really means nothing at all. The only time the loss column matters is when you get to about 20 games or less.

Matt Carpenter just got hit in the wrist by a pitch and walked right to the dugout with the trainer.

That is a real shame.

Seriously, I know he is a cardinal, but come on. You like seeing good players get hurt?

If there is some juicy info about carpenter being a piece of crap maybe I'd agree, but j haven't hear anything..... otherwise this is despicable.

Quite uncalled for.

I am a Arab American and the NFL is dead to me too... got a problem with that?

Kudos for sharing your life story.

Soccer having 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw tends to eliminate that debate. You're simply X points ahead or behind, and the only real interest beyond that is when you have less games played and if you can make up the difference or not. I mean theoretically you could argue whether a team that's 9 points ahead with 3 games more played is in the lead or not, like in baseball, but in a couple of decades following the sport I've never seen it. In cases like where it's 4-5 points difference with 2 games in hand for the trailing team there's more room to debate who'd in the better position and more likely to come out on top, but there's no debate as to who is actually ahead, or by how much.

Probably helps that there doesn't tend to be very big differences in # of games played either, as rainouts are nowhere near as common, and games are easier to make up when they do happen.

Ok stop with the parsing of our record like it means anything. However you parse this teams record is going to be defined completely by their one terrible stretch so you can make it look any way you want it to.

The team was 55-37 on July 10th. They proceeded to go 1-8 over their next 9 games. Since that time they are 12-10 coming off of a loss. If we miss the playoffs it isn't because the team played .500 for X number of games including mid July. It is going to be because we went 1-8 in that 9 game stretch. That one stretch alone turns a 90 win team into an 85 win team.

Any way you parse our record that includes that 9 game stretch is going to completely change the narrative in ways that aren't really true.

A quick update on the playoff odds with 35 Brewers games to go...

Fangraphs Playoff Odds: Brewers have 57.0% odds to make playoffs, 10.6% odds to win division, and a 1.3% chance to win the World Series.

The only NL teams with higher Fangraphs playoff odds currently are the Cubs (97.1%), Dodgers (74.7%), and Phillies (59.4%). Right behind the Brewers are the Braves (56.5%), D-backs (52.6%), Cardinals (43.4%), and Rockies (42.2%)

Baseball Prospectus Playoff Odds: Brewers have 56.5% odds to make playoffs, 13.1% odds to win division, and a 3.3% chance to win the World Series.

The NL teams with higher BP playoff odds currently are the Cubs (94.2%), Braves (66.8%), Dodgers (66.6%), D-Backs (62.4%), and Phillies (58.7%). Right behind the Brewers are the Rockies (47.8%) and Cardinals (39.6%).

Both systems currently project the Brewers to finish with 88 wins.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Dodgers lose again in Jansen's return. As annoying as it is to see the Cardinals keep winning, it would be kind of hilarious if the Dodgers make huge moves to go for it at the deadline, land Machado and Dozier, and end up with not even a wild card to show for it.
