Wade Miley Eat Crow Thread

I will have a double serving, please. I am not buying in completely, but if he can do what he did last night three out of four times, I will be eating more bird.

Would anyone else like to join me for dinner?

Throughout Miley's career, he's had a habit of stringing 2-3 decent to good starts together, before imploding into a start or two where he gives up 8 runs in two innings. I admit that I had absolutely no faith in him from the moment they signed him, but after last night's game, I raised my Defcon level to "very cautiously optimistic". If he turns out to be a solid starter for the team, Derek Johnson deserves a parade.

Look to a great extent, Miley was a reclamation project. But it's not like he was never good. He was and even in his dismal 2017, he had 2-3 very good starts. So it was in there somewhere. A few years ago just about everyone had written off Francisco Liriano. Like Miley he had success early in his career but after bouncing around for a couple unproductive years in 2011 and 2012 in Minnesota and Chicago, the Pirates grabbed him for $1 million and he went on to have 3 very strong years in their rotation helping them to the playoffs all 3 years. Even when Liriano was bad in 2011 and 2012, he mixed in some gems among the wreckage.

These are just the kind of guys a team like the Brewers need to be on the lookout for. Jury's still out on his being able to sustain it, but he sure looked in command last night.

Guys it was the Reds

Who had scored 5 and 6 runs against brewer pitching the prior two games...the Reds can hit and that ballpark is a bandbox...it's 1 start, but don't discount it entirely because the team Miley faced can't pitch.

If he keeps walking guys he won't be around long

This is worse than the DFA Braun thread.

I didn't say I wanted to sign him to a multi-year contract. I now have a glimpse of hope he will have ongoing success.

A simple post in the Optimism thread probably would've been a bit better. But hey, he dealt last night!

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Yeah, what others said. Concluding anything one way or another after one start, just no.

With that said, I fully admit I was one of the ones saying "Huh??!" after Miley was signed and couldn't have imagined he would make the team. But I will be very happy if I am proven wrong. If they think there is something to find here with Miley, maybe there's something to it. They obviously didn't pull his name out of a hat.

Way too early to eat, or not eat crow.

One start people, only one start.

I suppose it depends on how fast of an eater you are.

Probably a little early for an eat crow thread but this is better than an I told you so thread :)

Haven't watched much of Miley. But just looking at his track record, would the most likely favorable situation is a low to mid 4.0, and we win half his starts? Something like his 2014 and 2015 seasons (ignore 2016 and 2017 because Baltimore). I'd be happy with that until around the ASB when Nelson comes back, someone is called up or we make a trade.

1)The Reds' offense, despite scoring some runs the previous two games, is not too good.

PECOTA had the Reds scoring 613 runs ROS, 5th most in the NL. Reds offense is fine.

The projection is what it is, but so far they are 22nd in VORP and 24th in fWAR and 22nd in runs scored/game. A strong "meh" at best.

That’s a sample that includes one of the worst 2 week slumps of Votto’s career and their 2nd best hitter Suarez on the DL. Since both those events have changed over the last week in a half, they are 3rd in runs scored, 4th in wOBA, and 6th wRC+. We are probably arguing semantics as I agree they aren’t a top 10 offense, but its not a AAA lineup and it still has one of the best 5 hitters on this planet. Anyway, I saw nothing that made me think Miley is going to be in the rotation still come August.
