2018 Packers Draft Selections and Discussion

CheezWizHed

Chiming in a bit late, but count me among those impressed with the new GM effectively flipping a 3rd round pick in 2018 for an extra 1st round pick in 2019, all by sliding back 4 spots.

I would have liked Derwin James at 14 (more than Fitzpatrick, since I was paranoid they'd try him at corner after just having dealt away a college safety who struggled at CB)...but when someone offers you 2 first round picks for your one, you take it. I'm more concerned with Alexander's injury history than I am with his height; even if he needs help over the top covering someone like Julio Jones....so would guys who are a half-inch taller.

Now, here's hoping they use some of their extra resources to grab an extra day 2 pick, and hopefully find a WR with the top-end speed to get separation, along with some needed depth at the O-Line and defensive front 7.

Kevin King says hi! :)

I mentioned it elsewhere, but I read that Pettite likes a tall CB on one side and shorter/faster on the other. Probably just for that reason. Covering different types of WRs. I doubt we will see the CB A on the left and CB B and the right scheme as much. I'd guess they start following WRs more often now.

I never quite bought into Jackson at #14. I saw an early mock draft that had him going to the Packers in the second round. I think it makes more sense there with his speed and lack of experience.

House and Williams will have quite a bit of talent to mentor this year.

ILB, not OLB, for the record.

Weird though because every highlight seems to be rushing from the edge.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

From an article on fox sports.com, Burks played three different positions in college: free safety, linebacker-safety hybrid (star) and inside linebacker.

So maybe someone like Josh jones? Or packers.com saying he was transitioning from safety to ilb.

Remember what Yoda said:

"Cubs lead to Cardinals. Cardinals lead to dislike. Dislike leads to hate. Hate leads to constipation."

NFL.com has him listed as a weak side OLB (WILL) in a 4-3 or an ILB in a 3-4. At 6'3" and 233lbs, he surely isn't an OLB in a 3-4. But functionally probably more of a nickle backer to cover TEs and RBs.

It does seem wise in today's game to have more coverage LBs than our traditional ILBs. I'm getting a little concerned about drafting a couple very inexperienced players (neither Burks nor Jackson have much history). Good physical numbers though. Hopefully, he makes it worth trading up for.

J'Mon Moore, WR, Missouri with pick 133

Quick blurb on Madison, per Walter Football (who gave an A- grade for the pick):

"Cole Madison was introduced as a tackle, but I think he may have to play guard. That makes more sense, as Green Bay had to bolster its interior protection. I like this pick a lot, as I could see a scenario in which Madison starts as a rookie. "

I am never jazzed about taking kickers and punters before Rd 6.

JK Scott was aligned with the Raiders(who selected a punter), who picked after us so maybe the reason for the selection.

Congratulations Gutekunst on your first dumb-dumb pick. Last year's rookie punter was seventh in the NFL in net average. Good luck getting a much better performance than that. OLB, TE, S positions all could use help. Also could have added more depth to OL or WR. They must not like the bottom of the board to take a punter there.
