...as a starter, or as a reliever?

I'd love to see Woodruff given a shot at Suter's spot in the rotation, if only to give him the shot before Miley gets the opportunity, based on Wade's spring training performance.

Per Wikipedia, the injury can be caused by "a fall onto an outstretched hand."

...while that diving stop (and throw to the bag) last night was fun to watch, it's clearly where he got hurt when rolling over his glove hand.

So Woodruff is going to be pitching out of the pen? Or another move coming to send Suter down? Doesn't make much sense to have 6 starters on the 25.

My guess would be Suter to the pen and Woodruff to start but if they are doing that I'm not sure why they just didn't bring up a position player for a couple of games until Woodruff was needed to start.

Edit: Oh I see the Brewers have off May 3rd and 7th so this can be a short stay for Woodruff until they need a fifth starter again.

I assume this means Suter is going to the pen, and they will be 8-deep there. They wouldn't bring Woodruff up to pitch in relief.

Well, he was in the bullpen to start the season. I sure hope he was brought up to start, but I don't think it's a given.

That would be ideal. We really didn't have a long reliever in the bullpen and that seems a perfect role for Suter. Eat up innings when the team is leading or losing by three plus runs vs taxing the arms of more important relief pitchers.

Just a bummer with Thames, he's been great vs righthanded pitchers in that platoon.

I am a little surprised Woodruff is being called up as BP depth but not that they want another BP arm.

Why relegate Woody to the pen if you see him as a starter long-term? I get wanting to stick with Suter (though it wouldn't be my choice) as a starter, but then why not call up a BP piece and let Woody keep starting in AAA? Co Springs that scary?

I don't get it, really.

I'm sorry, but this is dumb.

Evidently Woodruff has been slated for the Suter treatment this year.

I'm a little surprised they didn't recall Lopez instead, which they could have done due to a DL move even though he was sent down less than 10 days ago. But if they didn't want Lopez, the only other options on the 40-man roster besides Woodruff were Wilkerson (hurt), Peralta (not ready yet), Houser (just started yesterday), or Diplan (really not ready yet).

It was really either Lopez or Woodruff. They went with the fresher arm of the two.

That's tough. Eric had been doing well. The Brewers had really limited his exposure to lefties - and he was a great power source.

Oh well, that's why we like to have depth.

Agreed it is tough but in looking for the silver lining, I would submit that its better to happen now then later (like around the trade deadline or in the heat of a August/ September pennant/ Wild Card race)...

Citing the upcoming Cub series as a reason to have Woodruff in the pen basically means they are expecting Suter to get shelled once again Friday...if that's the case, why not have Woodruff make that start? There's no way he shouldn't be starting games over Suter right now.

Bummer for Thames - hopefully he's back healthy at some point before July, and by then guys like Santana have picked up the slack in a big way. I'm hopeful this shifts Braun to more of the everyday 1B gig, keeps Yelich in LF where his defense has its best value, and gives Santana regular ABs in RF where he can either get going or completely disappoint us this season. There shouldn't be any more OF/1B logjam excuses now - unless you're Broxton or Phillips...

Depth is a thing that all great teams have. Stearn's was smart to not trade Santana, Aguillar, Thames etc

He was smart not to trade them for less than what he thought they were worth. I'm guessing he would have traded one or two of those guys in a minute if he got the return he wanted. Still would.
