RIP Davey Nelson

Recommended Posts

His unabashed love of the game was always such a joy during broadcasts.

I'll miss Davey.

Does anyone know what he passed from? The article just says a long illness. Didn’t he broadcast as recently as last season occasionally?

I read this morning it was cancer.

Awww man. That's some terrible news to start the day. Davey was never a great broadcaster, but he had a genuine love of the game that was hard not to pick up on. I will say that he was an unabashed homer and I always like that in my broadcasters. RIP Davey.

Sad news about Davey.

Nelson played parts of 10 seasons in the majors. He had one very good year - 1973. He hit .286 with 43 stolen bases and 3.2 bWAR - making the all-star game that year. He even got a few MVP votes. A lifetime .244 hitter, Nelson spent his post-ball days as a coach and TV analyst.

Here is Davey in his heyday.

RIP Davey. I also was surprised he was 73, would've guessed 10 years younger.

His joy for the game was always very apparent. I always smiled when he'd do the on-field instructionals post-game.

Davie was, in a word, genuine. A true gentlemen, a kind man especially to young fans. Hearing that I was a fan of his he took the time to find my address and send me an autographed picture even though I never asked for anything.

Davey will be missed.

While he was in Cleveland he seemed to be the only guy that could communicate/ reach Albert Belle.

When I made my only trip to Miller Park in May 2013, I made sure I got there early enough to see Davey in the RF corner, to say Hi, thank you & shake his hand.

Rest well Davey...
