Rattlers Fall Behind Early and Can't Rally

Kane County beats Wisconsin 4-2 to earn a three-game sweep

Wisconsin Box Score

Rattlers lose their 6th straight and have started the year winning only 3 of their first 13 games. It's a behind the 8-ball that seems like an all-too-common occurrence since the Brewers' relationship began with the club. Can only hope this is the ebb before the tide rolls in.

I typed this just a few hours ago for yesterday's game, but Joantgel Segovia! The 21 year old Venezuelan lead the way on offense yet again, notching another two hits including a double. Segovia also walked and stole a base, his 8th in as many tries. His .436 BA is good enough for 4th in the Midwest League and he leads the league in stolen bases. Not too shabby for a guy that had a .516 OPS last year.

Fastforwarding past Joaquin De La Cruz's starting effort, Josh Pennington made his 2018 debut throwing mid-90s gas. He walked 2 and struck out 2 in a scoreless inning. As Mass Haas noted elsewhere, he'll be working out of the pen for the time being. The real story though may have been Michael Petersen, who continues to shine in his first taste of full season ball. The 6'7 UK-born 23 year old thew 4 scoreless innings to close out the game and keep the Rattlers close, allowing only a single (and a HBP) whilst striking out 5. Petersen has long been considered to have an under the radar gem of an arm, and he seems to be showing that here in the early going with no runs allowed through his first 8 2/3 innings with the Rattlers.

Final: Mobile 2, Biloxi 1

Different Night, Same Result: Shuckers Fall in 10

BayBears Score in 9th, 10th to defeat Shuckers

By Garrett Greene

cut.JPG

Biloxi Box Score

For the third straight night Biloxi has lost a game by one run. Tonight, the lose was especially painful as the Shuckers had a 1-0 lead going into the 9th inning - only to give up a run in the bottom of the frame. They would go on to lose in the 10th.

The Shuckers held the Mobile BayBears to only six hits in the game - but they did give seven free passes. Kodi Medeiros threw five scoreless innings - allowing a hit and four walks. He struck out five. Biloxi batters managed only four hits and three walks for the night, including two by Jake Hager.

Batting

Jake Hager: 2-3

Lucas Erceg: 1-3, BB

Pitching

Adrian Houser: 2.1 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER, 2BB, 3K

Kodi Medeiros: 5.0 IP, 1 hit, 0 ER, 4BB, 4K

Nate Griep: 1.2 IP, 2 hits, 1 ER, 1BB, 3K, Blown Save

Brad Kuntz: 0.0 IP, 1 hit, Lose

Notes

Kodi Medeiros has put up some strange numbers this year. He has only allowed six hits and one earned run in 15 innings of work. He has struck out 13 batters and has an ERA of 0.60. He has, however, walked 10 batters.

Jake Hager, a 25 year old infielder signed this past off season as a minor league free agent, has had a nice campaign thus far. He is hitting .324 on 34 ABs. Hager is a career .258 hitter with minimal power.

Biloxi Log

Biloxi scored only one run in the game - in the top of the 2nd.

Biloxi Top of the 2nd

Nick Franklin singles on a ground ball to center fielder Bo Way.

Jake Gatewood walks. Nick Franklin to 2nd.

Blake Allemand lines out to second baseman Connor Justus.

Jake Hager singles on a ground ball to center fielder Bo Way. Nick Franklin scores. Jake Gatewood to 2nd.

Tyler Heineman flies out to right fielder Brendon Sanger. Jake Gatewood to 3rd.

Wendell Rijo grounds out, second baseman Connor Justus to first baseman Matt Thaiss.

Buies Creek 8, Carolina 4

Mudcats Waste Late Lead in 8-4 Loss

Keston Hiura went 2-for-5 with his first home run of the season in the loss

cut.jpeg

Keston Hiura had a good night for Carolina but Cam Roegner couldn't match his first two starts and the Mudcat bullpen couldn't hold the lead. Roegner threw 79 pitches in less than three innings and had to come out of the game. Buies Creek, much like the parent Astros, is a very patient team and were also able to foul off a number of strike two pitches to extend at bats. A home run by Ronnie Dawson in the third was the first run given up by Roegner this year after 15 scoreless innings. The Mudcats struck out 14 times, a statistic in which they lead the league. The Astros stole six bases in the game, four off Roegner.

Cam Roegner 2 2/3 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 4 K

Miguel Sanchez 3 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K

Nattino Diplan 1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Keston Hiura 2-5, 2B, HR

Tucker Neuhaus 2-5

Clint Coulter 2-4, 2B

Over/under on how many more starts Burnes makes in AAA...7? Medieros has so much Madison Bumgarner in him, really hard not to get excited about him as a top of the rotation type of starter.

Kodi’s whole career has pretty much come down to if he can learn to pitch over throw. One thing to be nasty without command & to nasty with ability to put ball where you want to. Command is what will dictate if he is a TOR, 4/5, Hader role, or Loogy. Good news is he is showing growth there. Last year out of pen as piggy back he was great. For some reason, when he starts games he usually has his worst outings. Hope that stays away in 2018
