Rounds 21-30; Latest: Jon Mungle Update

Recommended Posts

BA has a note on our 23rd pick:

Redshirt sophomore OF Jon Mungle has the quickest bat on Mississippi State and is a plus runner. He swings and misses too much right now to be an early draft

Mungle is the #24 prospect in the state of Mississippi

Here you go Colby. I just copied them from the Draft page.

21. Taylor Meier - RHP - Orangewood Christian HS

Big 6'7" righty from Florida.

22. Terry Trofholz - OF - TCU

Good overall hitter with a career. 381 batting average at TCU. Had a great junior campaign that made him a 2nd team All-American. Dipped a bit this spring as a senior, batting .328 with a .407 on-base percentage and a .446 slugging percentage in 192 at bats. Has pretty good speed, and is considered a pretty good defensive outfielder as well. Doesn't have much power, and is basically a gap to gap hitter.

23. Jon Mungle - OF - Mississippi St

Good pure hitting prospect with a potentially powerful left-handed stroke. Shows a patient eye at the plate. Had somewhat of a tough year this past spring batting .260 in 204 at bats after hitting .341 the year before. Needs to improve his defense, and for now is limited to left field. Has fared well in a tough SEC conference.

24. Drew Anderson - OF - Nebraska

Anderson has a sweet lefty stroke and is rather accomplished as a hitter. Has a good idea of what he wants to do at the plate, and always has hit better with wood bats. Continues to get better while adding strength, which should allow him to add more over the fence power. Shows a good eye at the plate, and doesn't get fooled very often. He doesn't have many other promising tools other than his hitting prowess, similar to Mungle, so he probably is restricted to a corner OF spot, DH or 1B. #8 prospect in the Alaskan League in the summer of 2002.

Two more added to the Helena roster:

Comments from Brewerfan.net's Draft Coverage...

22nd round. Terry Trofholz - OF - TCU - TX

24th round. Drew Anderson - OF - Nebraska - NE

Not a surprise that the college guys, particularly any college seniors, are the first to sign...

"I'm leaning toward college right now, but this is awesome," he said. "Unbelievable. . . . I never thought I would be drafted out of high school."

Am I correct that five have signed so far?

TWO MORE SIGNED FROM THESE ROUNDS...

Both to Helena...

27th rounder Dan McKenna - RHP - Rutgers - Camden - NJ

Perfect pitcher's build at 6'4" 205. Served as Rutgers-Camden's closer this past season, and his fastball has been clocked in the mid-90s. With his size & stuff, he could be a steal as a 27th rounder if he develops more consistency & better secondary offerings.

30th rounder Robby Deevers - OF - U of Texas - Arlington - TX

Strongly built OF prospect with average tools across the board except for one: A very strong arm. Displays good speed in the OF and has a little bit of pop at the plate. Needs to hit for a better average and exhibit a better eye at the plate overall.

Hope everyone is enjoying the local newspaper stories as much as we enjoy tracking them down. We'll be in contact with the Helena front office to make sure they get their background info on these kids just as we are. At least we'll be able to put some story info and match them up with the names in the box scores. It's truly a shame that the Helena broadcasts won't be available from a Brewer perspective online; at least we believe that will be the case. With the Mountain time zone and all, the games would have provided some nice late night entertainment, as the Ogden webcasts did in seasons past. We've asked the Helena staff to inform all the players and their families about Brewerfan.net as well.

Nice lengthy story on 24th round OF Drew Anderson, whose profile was provided earlier in this thread:

Brewers send Anderson to Helena

By CHRIS BASNETT

Hub Sports Writer

KEARNEY, NEBRASKA - Drew Anderson knows where he's going to start his trek towards the major leagues, he just doesn't know a lot about it.

"I just heard it's real pretty up there," Anderson said with a laugh. "That's about all I know."

"It" is Helena, Mont., home of the Helena Brewers, the advanced rookie league team for Major League Baseball's Milwaukee Brewers. Anderson left Kearney today to report to Helena and his first professional baseball assignment.

Anderson signed with the Brewers after being taken on the second day of the Major League Baseball Draft in the 24th round. He was the 799th overall pick.

"I didn't really think I would get taken the first day and then I talked to a couple scouts that day and then the next morning and they said 'don't worry, you're going to get drafted,'" Anderson said. "Soon enough, it was early in the morning, I get drafted at like 11:30. It was pretty awesome."

Awesome, and somewhat surprising. Anderson started much of his sophomore season for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and had a solid summer with the Anchorage Glacier Pilots of the Alaska Baseball League, a wooden bat summer league. In 34 games there, he hit .328 with three home runs and 24 RBIs.

Once he returned to Nebraska for his junior season however, the starts and the numbers began to decline. Anderson started only 28 games this year after starting 47 as a sophomore. He saw his batting average dip from .266 to .238.

The Huskers' season was ended by upstart Southwest Missouri State in the Lincoln Regional, marking the first time in Anderson's career he wouldn't make the trip down I-80 to play in the College World Series.

"I didn't really know, going into the draft, whether or not I was going to get taken," Anderson said. "I knew teams were interested, but I didn't know exactly if I was going to get the opportunity because I didn't have that good of a year."

Anderson would have had the chance to improve his numbers as one of four outfielders on the Huskers' 2004 roster, but the opportunity to play professional baseball was too much to pass up.

"Who knows if I'm ever going to get this opportunity if I come back to school and I don't have a good year," Anderson said of his decision. "It's just a dream that I've had, and after next year I'm going to be 23. I'll be getting pretty old to try and give it a realistic shot."

Anderson leaves Nebraska with no hard feelings, calling his decision to leave the Cornhuskers "tough" after helping lead the program to its first two College World Series appearances.

"I've had a great time at Nebraska. I've grown close to the coaching staff, and we went to the College World Series two of the three years I was there," Anderson said. "I knew if I came back and played to my capabilities I could be an everyday starter."

As it is, Anderson will be at the bottom rung of the Brewers' organization trying to make his way to the A or AA level with Milwaukee's other draft picks. He is unsure of what position he will play, but scouts have told him it will be either left or right field.

Anderson could see his first professional action June 23, when the Brewers open a seven-game homestand with a four-game series against the Casper Rockies.

Helena is a member of the Pioneer League, playing in the North Division. All four North Division teams are in Montana while the South Division is home to two teams in Utah and one each in Wyoming and Idaho.

Anderson is the first Kearneyite since Mike Asche to be taken in the Major League Baseball Draft. Asche played for the University of Nebraska at Kearney and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1992.

"I think it was just my time," Anderson said. "I think I need to go out and have a chance to play every day and get better and give it a shot."

And the latest from gomemphis.com:

A redshirt sophomore, Mungle had indicated to scouts he would likely return to Starkville for at least one more season.

"I've got all summer to make my decision," said Mungle, who would be draft-eligible again next season. "More than likely I'll be going back to school."

Scouts consider Mungle a potential five-tool player, but he admits he has some room for improvement.

"I'm a guy who can hit home runs and steal bases, which is a pretty rare combination," Mungle said. "Athletically, I can still get better. I've got a lot of work to do defensively, and I need to strengthen my arm."
