Brewers calling up Jacob Nottingham

Jett Bandy is the poster boy for the fact you only get so much information from metrics/analytics and still need good old fashioned scouting for a comprehensive view of a player. Nothing from the eye test validates any of his advanced metrics that may have lead to the desire to trade an actually good C for him. Once pina and Vogt are back I hope they just cut bait and move on. He’s brutal at every aspect of the game...

I am still good with moving on from Maldonado. Defensively he was fine but provided very little with the bat. Jett has shown flashes with the bat and seems to have improved defensively. He is three years younger than Maldonado and there is still room for improvement. He can be a serviceable backup.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Moot point soon enough. Bandy is out of options and they won't carry 3 catchers so he's moving on one way or another soon when Vogt returns.

My guess is Bandy gets traded in the next month to a team needing a backup catcher in a PTBNL/cash/international bonus space type deal.

I actually think there's a nonzero chance they cut Bandy once Pina is back. They already have Vogt on the 40-man and Bethancourt probably would be about the same as Bandy but with the added hype of maybe having figured something out this year (although that's heavily dependent on how much you trust spring training stats and Colorado Springs stats thus far). If Nottingham looks halfway decent, maybe give him a chance to play and potentially even steal time away from Pina if he continues to struggle.

The only downside of this really is if Nottingham could still use some seasoning time in AAA (which, based on what I've read, seems like the case), he'd be better off getting regular playing time in the minors.

Stearns/Counsell seem to take the safe route with prospects which so far has been a bit frustrating (see Lewis Brinson last year, Brandon Woodruff this year), so I'd be a little surprised if they cut Bandy, but barring some serious injuries to multiple players, I don't see Bandy making it to October on the Brewers 40-man roster, and might be best to play the hot hand and see what Nottingham can give you especially with the struggling offense.

I am kind of hoping Vogt just doesn't make it back. I think I'd rather us get a good look at Nottingham. Maybe he can do well enough to even put Pina in the lesser role. It would be amazing to have a young catcher grow with the crop of pitchers that are on the way.

The problem is neither Bandy nor Vogt have options remaining, and I doubt they are going to carry three catchers on the 25-man roster.

Well in my case they would just cut Bandy and then probably Vogt too if Nottingham was doing well. For this to be true, he'd have to make quite the impression though.

Nottingham could probably bat .400, throw out 50% of runners, and carry a 1.000 OPS and still get sent down once they have health at the position. Maybe he pairs with Pina once he's back and Bandy gets cut. But they're not cutting Vogt and Bandy. Because depth and all.

It remains to be seen if Nottingham can hit major league pitching, but three things have struck me in this tiny sample so far.

1. His plate discipline has been good, especially for a guy getting his first big league at bats.

2. While he han't had to throw yet, he looked great blocking balls in the dirt.

3. As much as anything, man does he look the part physically. This is my first time paying close attention to him and his frame, mixed with athletic ability are something you'd sculpt your ideal catcher to look like.

A lot of credit needs to be given to Nottingham and the Brewer staff for turning Jacob into a much better defender. Many people never thought he'd stay behind the plate. I haven't seen him in action, but reports over the past couple of years have been pretty positive. Also, he threw out 40% of runners trying to steal last year - which is pretty impressive.

Nottingham just turned 23 years old a couple of weeks ago - so he's still very young and raw. I just hope he keeps progressing behind the plate - and with the bat. I'm guessing he's going to Colorado Springs sooner than later, but let's hope his time in Milwaukee is a good one.
