Brewers calling up Jacob Nottingham

Suppose you could DL-swap Yelich for Thames or Braun if either needed more time

This is what I think we'll see. I noticed Thames on his first K, a called strike right down the middle, he walked very gingerly back to the dugout. I don't think they'll mess around with a groin, that's almost always a week or two (miniumum), and really easy to aggravate.

I hope they let him play. He probably is a better player than Bandy already. Amazing to me how many people wanted Nottingham exposed to rule 5 just this past offseason...

I wasn't one of them but it is not like Nottingham was exactly giving much to be confident about. The report was poor defense and struggled at the plate. Not sure what to get too excited about before his hot start this season.

The only part of that that's true...is that you weren't one of the people being negative about Nottingham. The report of poor defense and struggled at the plate doesn't tell the whole story. He improved drastically behind the plate last year, and his offensive peripherals improved despite the overall numbers stagnating. So the report you are referring to is simply inaccurate, unless one reads a scouting report from a national level source and looks solely at OPS to determine how he was at the plate.

Nottingham's defense has improved considerably over the past 12-18 months, and he was above average offensively last year in the Southern League by wRC+. He had an abnormally low batting average but everything else was good.

Spot on, I'll add his avg was weighted down by .255 BABIP. For his career he's been more 350-360, so that's a shockingly low number.

Yeah, I didn't get a chance to head down to Biloxi and catch many of his games so going by the scouting reports, that were not favorable, is about all some of us have to go on.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I think the 40 man is at 39. They could have purchased Bethancourt's contract. I like it though.

I think Bethancourt is out of options, so they wouldn't want to bring him up for a short term gig, and then risk losing him. He's a talent, but needs playing time, after the Braves and Padres botched his development so badly.

Most importantly, what number will he wear? I'd guess he's not sticking with 68. I'm going to say 10.

It is a good question, but not MOST important. The most important question is what will Augie call him?

My guess? Jason Nardington.

I have no problem with the way the Brewers handled the Pina/DL situation. It would be different is Pina couldn't play, but I'm under the impression that he could have played these last few days if necessary. For example, I don't think it would be wise for the Brewers to DL Thames today and have him be ready to play 3 days from now and then lose a weeks worth of games when they need his bat versus right-handed pitching. The Brewers were in a situation where Pina was in day-to-day status and really the only other option they had was Nottingham who they probably didn't want to bring up this soon.

I've been pretty critical of many of these early roster moves, but with the info I have it seems like they made the right decision here. Just too bad that Pina's calf didn't respond better than it apparently has.

That's why you have Choi on the 40.

I would rather have Choi for 10 than Thames for 7 and 3 days of a man down, especially when you're going to be more likely to get Thames back at 100% and not 90.

I'm higher on Thames than most, but you're not replacing Bryce Harper here. This is the whole point of having all this depth, it's not doing you any good in Colorado Springs.

No official at bats for Nottingham but 2 nice walks including a nice one off of Raisel Iglesias in which he fouled off a couple tough pitches before finally taking the walk.

Hope he starts tomorrow or and Wednesday.

Fixed it!

Agreed. Bandy is just a body to hold down the position if needed.

I really hope he gets a shot and tears the cover off the ball.

You and the entire Brewers' marketing department, who is itching to kick in the inevitable "Sheriff of Nottingham" campaign...

Awesome bobblehead opportunity there for sure!
