Wild Ride in 2018 Email

Anyone else see this email from the Brewers today? It looks like they are well aware of the frustrations that fans are having already this season. I was happy to see the parts about improving their defense and being more consistent at the plate.

Crew Embracing Wild Ride In 2018

The Brewers are only 13 games into their young 2018 campaign, but in many ways, it feels as if this team has already experienced a season's worth of drama. After all, the first two weeks have produced more highs and lows than a weekday soap opera -- from incredible comebacks to heartbreaking defeats to painful injuries and everything in between.

"We've been a little bit of a high-wire act for a little over a year now," manager Craig Counsell said on April 6. "That's exciting, it's maddening, it's frustrating. It's entertaining baseball, I think -- even on the nights it doesn't work out."

Despite a chaotic first couple weeks, the Brewers enter their off-day pleased with their 7-6 record -- all things considered. The team has endured a variety of challenges in the early going, starting with injuries to key players like Christian Yelich and Corey Knebel. And while those injuries have taken their toll to an extent, the Brewers have taken a 'next man up' approach, rallying with steady performances from their talented bullpen and deep outfield.

"I think we've certainly had our share of challenges, up to this point, with some significant injuries, with some tough games," Counsell said. "But we've had some great games. Sitting here, where we're at, we should feel we're hanging tough."

With more than 15 seasons in "The Show," Milwaukee's skipper knows better than anyone that over the course of a 162-game marathon, the ability to "hang tough" during challenging stretches is often the very thing that determines just how far a team will go. And while Counsell and the Brewers are not hiding from the areas in which they need to improve -- a list that includes cleaning up costly mistakes in the field and becoming more consistent on offense -- they are proud of the grit they have demonstrated thus far and excited to see the results when the team starts firing on all cylinders.

"This is part of the roller coaster, part of the ride," Counsell said. "This is what the baseball season is. There are going to be tough games, there are going to be games that are a ton of fun like this ... this is the ride we're on."

The good thing about last year was that they were able to expand payroll and play up their playoff chances to sell more tickets for 2018. The bad thing about playing up your playoff chances and selling more tickets is that the fans buying those tickets expect the team to win every day, and they believe the world is collapsing if they don't.

"The most successful (people) know that performance over the long haul is what counts. If you can seize the day, great. But never forget that there are days yet to come."

There has been a big increase in knee-jerk reactions this year because of the higher expectations (which may not even been warranted). Nobody really saw it coming that the Pirates were going to win 100 games this year and make a deep playoff run. It was a big oversight for sure.

The oddest thing about last year and this year so far is the incredible amount of close games. So there is just so much more drama and "ifs" to talk about and close late losses to be frustrated over. While forgetting all the close Ws

When the Brewers released their promotional schedule and the "heritage" days weren't on it but instead other new themed days and based off of some of the stupid/weird stuff they posted on social media over the offseason I said they must have a new promotions/marketing person in charge who wants to make their mark. This email basically confirms it for me.

It will take a lot more than the first two weeks of the season to believe that the Pirates are for real FWIW.

I think it was highly tongue in cheek.

I know it’s tongue in cheek but they are about as real as we were last year, imo. That’s not a compliment, just their ceiling is going to be low-mid 80s wins with this start and probably not a playoff team. They don’t have the talent to get to that high 80s/low 90s wins it will take to make the playoffs

What was the context of the email? We get weekly emails during the season from our ticket rep, but the one today didn't have that language in it. Some SSH emails go only to my SO because his is the name on the account, but he hasn't reported receiving anything like this.

Not asking to doubt you, only out of curiosity.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

It was a marketing email blast from Brewers.com (very different than the emails sent by the ticket reps) which included the above text along with photos followed by news links, promotions links, the upcoming home games with “buy tickets” links, links to apps such as the MLB Ballpark app, the MLB At-Bat app, and the MLB.tv app. Then there were a bunch more stories and promotions linked from Brewers.com and it all culminated with a Brewers Trivia Question:

With his home run Wednesday as a center fielder, Hernan Perez has now hit homers at every defensive position other than first base, catcher, and pitcher. Only one other Brewer has homered at six or more defensive positions. Who was that player?

A. B.J. Surhoff

B. Paul Molitor

C. Bill Hall

D. Bill Spiers”

Answer:

B) Molitor homered at 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF and CF.

I have an email account that I use for my Brewers tickets which is different than the one used for my MLB.com account (account for the MLB At-Bat, Ballpark, and MLB.tv apps). This email went to the account associated with my MLB.com account. I also get constant Brewers merchandise emails to that account, so clearly I didn’t unclick the proper boxes at some point long ago.

Not just “at Night” anymore.
