Phillips recalled from Triple A

markedman5
Well, just as I typed that, they announced that Guerra and Jorge Lopez are coming up, with Phillips optioned and Hoover DFA'd. Ducky lives to see another day.

Amazing that Drake continues to survive. I get the Hoover DFA because he just didn't look like a fit last night and we have better options but I just simply do not understand how they continue to put Drake on this 25 man roster.

Phillips on the other hand, I am really glad they went after outfielders in the offseason. I know some have dreams of the defense he brings but his bat would get so annoying over the course of a season. He just simply doesn't make enough contact to be on the big league team and be a contributor.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Hopefully Phillips goes down and rakes in Colorado. I was hopeful that he'd be able to carry over his performance last September into this season, but it hasn't happened. He looks like he's overthinking, rather than just letting things come to him. He's such an uber-talented guy, I think he just needs to let things slow down a little. Fortunately he's still very young (23), so the growing pains are ok. I imagine he'll be back and will likely be a major contributor to this team this year.

I really wish they kept Phillips around so they could have a decent CF. Could have sent Drake packing as he certainly won't be available today. Since Counsell has been hesitant to commit to Guerra after today maybe that means the return of Broxton since Phillips can't be recalled for 10 days.

Outstanding! How many outfield starts will Hernan Perez get now with this new outfield configuration?

If Jorge Lopez does not pitch well, the board can expect to hear much moaning and complaining out of me. IMO Phillips should have stayed on the active roster and gotten at-bats until Yelich was back. But I understand why this move had to be made, Stearns and Counsell need to keep up the quota of making one active roster move per game so they look like the smartest guys in the league. Need that fresh arm...although a dead arm would have been better than the J.J. Hoover fresh arm.

Or have we figured out that management has no confidence in the bottom 20% of the roster?

Williams is still up, right? I think Drake is here until Logan or Miley are healthy and available, even though I disagree with that approach - Jennings should make Drake expendable and allow for one of Woodruff or Houser to be up right now - except that's not possible for a few more days with their recent trips back to CO Springs. The Brewers need to just indicate Albers is their interim closer and roll with it until Knebel can get back into the mix. Seems like since his injury CC has gone crazy with some of the pen moves and while having options in AAA to shuttle back and forth due to depth is good, it feels like they're going to that well too much and it's having a negative effect on the pen's stability. Last night's loss stunk but those games are going to happen when the pen is constantly being relied upon to give you 4+ innings of work protecting 1 run leads. Their biggest need right now is getting starters consistently through 6 and into the 7th innings instead of averaging ~5IP per start.

I'd also like to see Woodruff and Houser back up soon. If Guerra performs well in Milwaukee, both of those guys need to start games in CO Springs in the interim.

Cain said yesterday he'll be good to go on Friday, and Yelich is slated to come off the DL Sunday. I can't imagine Broxton would only come up for a day, but stranger things have happened. It seems that 24th-25th man is going to be constantly churning this year.

Drake should be gone simply because he's not available today. I would assume Guerra was already in St. Louis but just looking at flights from Denver to St. Louis, Jorge would have to really rush to make it before game time. Jennings may be the whole bullpen today.

I would hope Hader and Albers are available today. Albers is a veteran pen guy who has pitched on back-to-back nights often. It isn't like he needs babying.

Keep in mind, Houser only pitched 29 innings last year coming back from injury. No clue what their plan is, but may be tough to have him in the pen all year and try to limit his innings. As we can see, there won't be much rest for anyone in the BP.
