Marion, Gwynn, Opdyke signed

Recommended Posts

So just taking a quick scan that Leaves us with Weeks and Wooley (6th) that are definitely worth signing plus some DFE guys to looks at? Anybody else we should add to that list that would add a lot of value?

Very cool. Thanks for the heads up rpms6!

As for remaining draftees other than Wooley & Weeks, Garrett Bussiere would be atop my wish list. It would be nice to sneak in a Ayers, Meier, Zink and/or Maday somewhere, but I'm not counting on it. Almost everyone else is a DFE.

With Gwynn heading to Beloit, what's to become of Steve Moss? Will he be promoted or shifted?

I've got to believe that Moss and Gwynn will both be playing side by side in Beloit. Move one of them over, Beloit can sure use the bats.

Will Carter finally get sent down now?

With Opdyke in AZ, that makes 5 catchers in AZ, 5 in Helen, 3 in Beloit, 4 in High Desert. Hopefully the Brewers can find at least 1 future catcher from that group.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif

With Opdyke, the Brewers have 4 catchers in Arizona, and Opdyke will see the majority of the AB there. The other three are Bravo, Guhring, and Olayemi. If you're thinking of Lozada (as I know many of you are, he was either released or sent to the Dominican.

Ogden has 5 catchers, but Corporan, Frost, and Rottino will all see major time elsewhere.

Eure hasn't played a game at catcher in Beloit, though he is useful there.

In High Desert, I'm assuming the 4th catcher you're talking about is Belcher, and he's no longer a catcher. He doesn't have an arm at all, and while his bat was nice as a backstop, he can't play D. He is done there.

Thank for the clarification. With Belcher's struggles in the OF and if he can no longer catch, does he have a position any more? I notice he's been used almost exclusively as a DH lately.

Gwynn probably won't be at Beloit for a couple of days. Usually, they send guys down to AZ for at least a few days just to go over things, get players used to pro ball, etc. I wouldn't even be surprised to see him play in a game or two for the AZL team before goign to Beloit. I'd give it a week or so, but they may push him a little faster.

It is just nice to see that we are getting all our top picks to sign and get on the field. All we truly have left to sign is Weeks and Wooley!! Let's get it done and get them on the field too.

I also believe with the bevy of catchers that we have that it is time to move Pedro E. up to HD. Otherwise send VandenBerg because one or the other needs to move up.

Tonight they made it sound as if Gwynn is expected to quickly be moved to A+ if he performs at the A level. So he might not be there long enough for it to really cause a problem. If that's the case, I'd guess Moss will be shifted temporarily.

While Moss is hitting better lately, and has been drawing walks about as well as Prince Fielder all season, he isn't doing anything IMO that justifies bumping him up to High Desert. His power numbers are pretty low, and while many expect those numbers to automatically improve in Adelanto, he still has to produce to justify a promotion. Plus, moving up to Beloit to start the season was somewhat of a stretch since he saw such limited time at Ogden last year. Basically, I don't think he's going anywhere unless he goes on a power binge.

As always, there's nothing wrong with having too many outfielders in Beloit, too many catchers in Helena & Arizona & too many pitchers where ever you can get them.

As for all of our catchers, Opdyke can also play elsewhere, as it's been noted that he is athletic enough to handle a move to another position (corner OF was suggested) if he can't handle the defensive responsibilities behind the plate long-term.

I don't know why it didn't sink in, because I know I looked at Anthony Gwynn's statistics when we drafted him, but he really must have ended the season on a tear. I remember looking at his numbers early in the season & he was only hitting somewhere in the .230 range. About midseason I believe I noticed he was hitting around .280, and after that I don't think I looked again until we did indeed draft him. He finished the season hitting .359, which isn't particularly exciting for a college player, although it's hard to gauge stats for amateur players anyway, but it's a great number considering how slow he started. Now that he's signed hopefully he can indeed continue to hit well and get moved up to High Desert in a hurry. As MB has been talking about for a few weeks now, HD certainly could use the help in the OF.

I just got a lot more excited about Gwynn http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

According to this morning's Janesville Gazette, Snappers GM Brian Shakow says that Gywnn will report to the Snappers on Monday, not Tuesday, for the game against Fort Wayne. He will not play however. Shakow said he will be on the temporairly inactive list. Whenever he does start playing will be good news for the Snappers offense.

The article also said that Gwynn and his dad will be at Miller Park today for the Twins game. I hope they both come to the Snappers game tomorrow as I will be going and that would be pretty cool to see them both.

Why don't we just start every player in Milwaukee? If they don't get a hit or BB their first AB then we release them. Pitchers must K at least 1 batter and allow no runs in their first inning. Get rid of the minor leagues who needs them. They only slow the prospects from getting to Milwaukee.

Something just tells me that Gwynn will be pretty special

Growing up you learn from a fundamentalist and his strength is his batting eye. If you have that, not much can stop you from being a great hitter in the big leagues. Makes the pitchers throw to you because you can buy off a ball. Forget the lack of power, if this guy just gets on base better than anyone else the Brewers have and plays solid defense, he can sit in the outfield for years if you ask me.

I agree with Nikip there about the good eye. If he can hit like his pops and have his batting eye that is fine by me. Hit .360 or whatever and he can sit in whatever outfield position he wants.
