The irony of him hitting the DL is just too much.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

How so? Everyone knew there could and would be injuries at times in the OF. I mean my money would have been on Braun or even Cain for the first DL stint but it's always a possibility for everyone of course.

RHP Taylor Williams is up.

The good news: Extended ABs for Aguilar/Thames. Maybe one of them shows enough to get someone to say, "Let's make a deal."

I guess this isn't totally out of left field, since they still have the OF pretty well covered and don't necessarily need another active one.

Thames isn't going anywhere IMO unless they are extremely high on Choi. Maybe Aguilar if someone came calling with a good offer but I think the 1B trade market is going to be real weak.

Because everyone would’ve put their money on Braun, Cain and even Santana to be DL guys, not Yelich who most wanted to see play 162 games this year. On top of that we have had discussion after discussion about our roster construction and how it doesn’t work. Some people will still toot that horn but it’s sure nice to have good players ready to go in case of injury. Obliques are dumb.

Yelich averaged 145 games over the four full MLB seasons he played prior to 2018. So, he missed an average of 17 per season,

Yeah wasn’t expecting him to play all of the games. But he did play 155 & 156 the last two years. Point being he still was the first OF to get hurt. It’s somewhat funny after all this discussion.

Find more than one poster that was saying Yelich would play all 162 games.

I’m sure anyone would but TOR arms aren’t coming for Santana.

We don't know that. They admitted to being close to trading him twice during the off season. DS may not have been able to find a way to finish off those deals but we don't know why. Presumably secondary pieces. There were deals to be had.

Asked for it before, I’ll ask again since you repeated it. Please provide any link or quote that shows he was almost trade during the off-season. Looked for it when you said it the first time and couldn’t find anything about that.

You must have a very loose definition of TOR arm if you think there was a deal to be had for one involving Santana.

Let's give Stearns some credit, if an actual ace was available for Santana he would have pulled the trigger. He is not dumb. He was interested in dealing Santana all the way back at the Winter Meetings in December before there was any sign that Yelich and Cain were going to be Brewers so the fact that Santana was not dealt even after those deals is a pretty certain sign that the trade market for Santana was extremely underwhelming.

I wish Santana, or Braun, or at least Broxton, had been traded. But the OF trade market stunk. It is what it is. Guys like Corey Dickerson ended up available for basically nothing.

I guess I don't define a TOR as an ace (our definition of an ace could vary wildly as well) necessarily. I do believe there were trade opportunities available for arms significantly better than we currently have at three of our rotation spots. Call that TOR or something else. Let me put if differently. I'd be comfortable with Broxton or Phillips playing while Yelich is hurt if it meant a significant upgrade over what we currently have at back end of the rotation.

  • 2 weeks later...

Obliques have a nasty habit of reoccurring, so a few extra days getting him fully healed is the right choice.

They may also be waiting for winter to be over, so he has a better chance of staying loose. If that's the case he'll hopefully be back by June.
