The current roster construction doesn’t work because we have a good player on the bench and not Kirk Niewenhuis. Got it.

You don't really have anything. It doesn't work because they have guys that are everyday players on the bench, and guys that should be on the major league team in the minors. Sure, that is nice on paper, but it doesn't really help the team dynamic.

Why? We constantly have good players playing... how doesn’t that help us win ball games?

That us very arguable when it comes to the rotation, where trading Santana should have helped. Even if they had to package a good prospect with him, they should have gotten a pitcher.

My mother's maiden name is Flaherty, to my knowledge we are remotely related, but I still object to him being a cardinal. Though I have so e cousins who live in stl and are cards fans and I doubt they object lol.

Because we could have other good players playing more often. Right now Santana is not going to help us win the ballgame tonight. Obviously, if you consider no other factors, having a guy like Santana on your bench is amazing. However, since we don't have 12 all star pitchers on our roster, seems like a waste to have Santana on the bench

Just because there wasn’t a trade in the off-season doesn’t mean it won’t happen. And obviously these deals people speak of weren’t quality ones or they would’ve happened. We try to play armchair GM about crap we have no idea about. Done doing that. I’ll enjoy the extra offense while we have it.

Heck we speculate about these awesome deals even those multiple reports said other Gms don’t value Santana. Arm chair GMs. I tell ya.

For all we know, Domingo could pinch hit for Thames in the 5th or 6th if a lefty comes in from the bullpen. Then Braun would move to first and Domingo moves to the outfield.

true, but just the other night they let Thames face a lefty reliever in the 8th inning. Looks like when he is the starter CC will let him finish the game. I assume Santana will play somehow tonight, but obviously with a diminished impact.

As another argument against, we could also have competent 2b play or better pitching and have Aguilar pinch hit.

It's not that big of a deal having Braun start instead of Santana. I think Domingo will significantly outhit Braun over the course of the season and will force his way into the lineup more...

Looks like I’ll just watch Roseanne...

Kind of surprised MLB doesn't have uniform rules for color of under shirts. Weird to see a neon green sleeve.

Watched the Cardinals-Mets game on Sunday and both Ozuna and Cespedes were wearing the neon sleeves. Agree that it looks odd, would think they would require a neutral color or a team color.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Nice to see The Doorman and his wife in attendance.

A little late to this, but below is Jack Flaherty‘s Baseball America scouting report:

Flaherty was the definition of a projectable high school righthander when the Cardinals drafted him 34th overall in 2014.He possessed an alluring frame, polish and a feel for four pitches, but his velocity was yet to come. The velocity finally arrived in 2017. He filled out and began sitting 93-94 mph and touching 96 after previously working 90-92. The result was he missed more bats than ever, soared through the upper minors and made his big league debut on Sept. 1, joining former Harvard-Westlake teammates Lucas Giolito and Max Fried as big leaguers.

Flaherty is extremely aggressive with his heavy fastball and uses it liberally. His pinpoint command and ability to add and subtract from it, combined with his velocity increase, make it a true plus pitch. His 83-86 mph slider leapt forward as well to become his primary secondary as an above-average pitch that generates swings and misses, and he has a 77-80 mph curveball to give batters a different look as well. Flaherty was projected to develop a plus changeup, but it is still an inconsistent pitch at 86-89 mph.

A rotation spot will be Flaherty’s for the taking in 2018. As long as he maintains his velocity increase and fine-tunes his secondaries, he should settle into the middle of the rotation.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I can tell this Flaherty guy is going to bother me his entire career.

I do not understand why on earth Ryan Braun is starting today. Santana started the season with three good games...and is on the bench two days in a row.

I hope in retrospect I am wrong.

I hope Braun can get it going, but yeah, I'd like to see Santana get the edge in PAs.

Braun obviously has a huge hit this year, but overall, he's been pretty bad through the first 5. Some of his ABs have just been really ugly.
