Guys I deleted the first two responses to this thread. Let's start fresh and talk about the game, baseball, cheese sandwiches, etc. and try and refrain from posting about other people's posting habits. One person has been banned so hopefully that cleans things up for everyone.

I get it, kind of. But we should be able to have playful banter without it going mach 10 too. My Hand regression candidate is a good example of something that was very light hearted.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

A sweep to start off the season? I think Suter has a big day in spacious Petco today.

Agree. Wouldn’t shock me to see him give them six strong innings today.

Agreed. I just thought today would be a good time to start the thread with a clean slate.

Although the phrase "Hand regression" does open up a world of possibilities.

Fair enough. Last night's game thread got a little off kilter.

Let today mark the start of Brent Suter's march toward the 2018 NL Cy Young.

Perdomo has been almost 100% literally a two-pitch pitcher. Combined, he threw his sinker & cutter (or slider, depending on what system defines the pitch) over 90% of the time. He apparently flirts with a changeup or some form of splitter, but he didn't throw it much last season.

As noted in the pitcher matchup graphic in the lead post, he led the NL in GB% last year. So he's doing that part right. FanGraphs had an article last month about two-pitch pitchers with a brief note on Perdomo --

Luis Perdomo

Perdomo thrives by keeping the ball down in the zone with his sinker and curve. His groundball rate is elite (62%) but his lackluster strikeout rate (6.5 K/9) is keeping him from being among the league’s best. Developing an average change/splitfinger could put him over the edge. Right now it grades out to below average.

Change (label a splitter at times)

2017

8% SwStr%, 61% GB%

2016

12.4% SwStr%, 52% GB%

BA: “… firm changeup…”

Interestingly, there were three other Pads arms that made this article's list of two-pitch guys. Clayton Richard, Dinelson Lamet, & Jhoulys Chacín (obv. he's moved on). I wonder if there's a larger strategy here, that if they can get even one guy to add an effective third offering, they'll potentially have uncovered their own TOR ace.

I read the comments last night about Uke's awful call of Braun's homer and it's funny - all the clips I've seen that feature the radio call edit out the part where he thought Braun missed.

I haven't heard the original call, but I'm guessing that Uke blinked or took his eyes off of the pitch for a millisecond and somehow missed the bat making contact with the ball (and perhaps didn't hear the crack because of crowd noise). Then he saw Braun turn his head in what looked like disgust (at first, I thought Braun was upset he didn't get all of it or something) and thought he struck out.

I heard the full call, and that's exactly what happened. There was little reaction from the horrible crowd in San Diego last night as well. He also admitted that he missed it, so it isn't like he was trying to cover for anything.

This will be a very interesting lineup tonight. First glimpse of how playing time might be split up with RHP. I'm sure Thames is at 1B and we will see if Braun or Santana is sitting.

Makes sense for Braun with the off day tomorrow. Counsell likes doubling up. But after last nights heroics, it’ll be interesting.

I’ll also add, the guy who isn’t in there will most likely be the double switch if/when it’s necessary.

I would rest Braun. Keeping him healthy would be a huge part of his success. I think Thames will play his way out of the lineup anyways. Santana has been hitting the ball well and in my opinion should start 135-140 games at the very least.

Yep, that was part of why I didn't think this was as bad of roster construction as some thought. Look at Villar last night. Now hopefully our pitchers get to 5/6, but still the first double switch will probably get a couple AB.

Watching Cards game to kill time. Pham cuts in front of Ozuna on a fly ball which essentially let the runner tag and score from third. Don't think he even tries to score with Ozuna set and with a canon. Pham's throw missed the plate by 10 feet.

Ozuna hitless to start the year so far

Swarzak left with discomfort in his lower back.

I knew our record was bad last year when trailing headed into the ninth so I went and checked. Here is a post from the Sept 23rd game against the Cubs where we got our first win in such games. Glad it didn't take as long this year.

The Brewers have now upped their record to 1-54 when trailing after eight.

Not a fan of today’s lineup in any way. Dislike Arcia already getting a day off...especially for what is a pretty big downgrade defensively with Sogard at as. Also would much rather see Cain stay at the top than Thames. And with a day off tomorrow, not sure why Pina can’t catch again as I’m not a fan of Bandy either.

Ugh. Oh well. Loaded with lefties, hopefully they do sone damage and pull out the sweep!

Sitting Braun today would seem to be the most logical choice to double dip on the off days, like was already mentioned. I know last nights heroics my blind us but it's probably best for long term if he sits tonight.

Yeah, Braun is so much better when he's well-rested. I think he's just susceptible to inflammation and swelling and stuff like that. There is such a thing as being more prone to that sort of thing. I think that's why he took testosterone supplements. They help you recover. (Side note: I don't like Braun much, but it bothers me when people bring up steroids; just get your facts straight!)

Anyway, he has seemed to be very good after a little time off or when his only work is one PH appearance. He goes on a lot of hot streaks after time on the DL. I'd like to see more stats on that, but I've been watching him for years and it's always been a regular thing. Another thing he does really well is respond to being hated by fans. I think he kind of feeds off of that. It's as if he knows his body will only allow him to be great part of the time and he picks his spots for stuff like that.

Why, with a day off tomorrow, do 3 starters need a day off 3 days into the season? I had a feeling CC couldn’t help but do a lineup like his. Still shocked at the Thames at leadoff and Cain at 3 stupidity though

Piña really got his bell rung on a foul ball last night. I'm totally good with him getting the day off.

Arcia out of the lineup is likely punishment for forgetting how many outs there were during an inning yesterday, as he has been generally spectacular. Hopefully that is all it is and he doesn't have a minor injury.

Really rooting for Villar to hit well tonight. I like him so much better than Sogard& Perez, but he needs to hit to keep getting starts.

I love Cain & Yelich hitting 1-2. Wouldn't mess with that.....

I don't think Thames at lead-off is all that bad. He gets on base but is notoriously poor with runners already on base.

I have no problem with givings starters a day off. It's a long season. They're going full speed for the first time since last year. It takes time to get into game shape. How many times do you see a guy hurt a hamstring or something like that in week 1?

More importantly, you need your back-ups to get game reps. They'll all be needed this year and I'm all for getting them some work. Sogard in particular should definitely be getting occasional starts against RHP's until Arcia shows some ability to do anything besides hit a ground ball (if he's lucky) nearly every single time, or until Sogard proves that his success last year was a total fluke.
