What is taking so long?

The Brewers have 5 of their top 10 still unsigned and some parameters have been set.

Marion (8-219) - picks 215-218, 221-223 have signed

Wooley (6-159) - picks 156, 162-163 have signed, but none of them are high schoolers

Opdyke (5-129) - picks 125-127, 130-134 have signed. Opdyke should be looking for around $230,000-$235,000 and I think he should get his deal done soon.

Gwynn (2-39) should get somewhere between $800,000-$950,000 as players have signed in the 1st round supplemental and the early 2nd round.

Weeks (1-2) has a lot of leverage to get over $4 million with 3 of the top 4 picks last year getting over $4 million. Unfortunately Delmon Young and the Rays other top picks have not signed.

I'm not sure why but I saw somewhere in another thread (it may have been a newspaper article link) that Opdyke is looking in the $800,000 range, so his signing could take a while.

Also, I expect Weeks to be drawn out. Bud has made it clear that he wants signing bonuses to decrease this year. No agent wants that to happen. There is no way the Brewers are going to be the first team to make an offer outside of Bud's parameters and no agent wants to be the first one to accept an offer that is not slightly higher than the value of the contract signed by the player picked in the same slot last year. I'm sure Weeks is starting around $4.5-5 million, Milwaukee will be starting around $3-3.25. That's a big gap and it will take a while to bridge it.

I think the Weeks signing will not happen until Delmon Young is signed and then Rickie will get about a buck less. If Opdyke is truly looking for $800,000 he and his agent are dumb. He is a player that went about where he was expected to go and was not a player that dropped dramatically in the draft. He should IMO sign for slot value.

From a poster with ties to the Tuscon area, within the Opdyke thread in this forum:

As usual the Tucson paper was not even close. The numbers mentioned were off by hundreds of thousands. I do not know the actual figures but ignore these numbers. I believe the numbers were around the 200,000 mark to 250,000. I hope this one gets done soon.
