Wisconsin Basketball Thread 2018 - 19

I'd guess King looks drastically better 10 games from now, remember first games back from knee surgery. Biggest takeaway I had him was that his shot form looked great on FTs, i think he'll be just fine a month from now. Then add in Ford too and you at least shouldn't have the putrid offense that made last year so horrible to watch. If anything I'd say I was more concerned that Reuvers showed nothing on offense.

I think King isn't quite 100% confident in his knee, once that happens he'll be fine. He was arguably their best player on the pre-season road trip last year.

And the Bucks comparison is a good one. The were really whipping the ball around the perimeter. Big difference being that Happ can't shoot threes unfortunately. Hopefully Ford comes back full strength. Heard he was doing some really good things in practice this fall.

I will refrain from mentioning free throws until January :)

I whiffed on Ford, I thought he was done for the year. Iverson can bring some things to the table too, forgot about him. As for Happ, the Bucks comparison still fits- he is Giannis. Doesn't have to shoot 3s, just do damage in the paint. Obviously in a much different way.

I was thinking of Happ as more like a center but if the comparison to Giannis is only that neither shoots threes and both score almost at will inside then I get it.

They look like a top 4 team in the B10. I say that without seeing many of the other teams but the level of the starters looks like they'll be in the mix up top. Which would mean we would be back in the NCAA tourney, which would be a great thing.

Wisconsin returned their entire team for the most part right? You kind of expect teams like that to do well early on because they are already used to each other. I think Wisconsin should be a tourney team this year, but I could easily see them missing. The B10 seems really week this year at the top so they won't have much of a shot at "statement wins". They are fine if they can win games against similar talented teams, which they did against Xavier already.

Nobal Days, who is a Badger offer, has accepted an offer from Tulane. Mike Dunleavy is the coach there. Days goes to Washington Park HS.

This is incorrect, the Badgers rescinded their offer to Days when he wanted to commit over the summer.

I feel like (after watching the Xavier game) and this game the scoring is a bit less of an issue than it was last year. Spreading the ball around a lot more and relying a lot less on Happ to just bully people inside. Yeah, I know it was Houston Baptist, but seeing them score 96 while no one scored more than 17 points was really nice.

Aleem Ford just checked in to today's game.

I really thought he'd miss more time, based on the reporting of the injury. That's a huge addition to the Badgers perimeter game, assuming he hits the 3-ball as well as he did as a freshman.

No idea why the Badgers didn't do backdoor cuts all game long. Nice win for them today.

Wisconsin doesn't do a lot of cutting period. It didn't seem to me that Stanford was overplaying the perimeter passing lanes which usually makes a team vulnerable to back cuts. But Stanford's perimeter players length and the fact that they didn't come off their guys to double the post meant the Wisconsin perimeter guys didn't get the usual amount of good looks from outside. They countered Stanford by having Trice and Davison drive off the dribble. They had some success but they really had to work hard to get the ball over their men.

I think this team has a chance to be pretty darn good as long as Happ and Reuvers can consistently stay healthy and out of foul trouble. They are thin down low.

Badgers lit up Oklahoma today. Now they will more than likely get a crack at a really good Virginia team. Will be a nice early measuring stick for this team.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

They looked really good today. The defense has been outstanding.

I came into this season thinking it was a "prove it" season for Gard after last year's abysmal performance. I know it's early, but they've beat Xavier, Stanford, and Oklahoma, (and really clowned Oklahoma) so far, and looked pretty darn good doing it. They've still got VA, NC State, and Marquette as some tough non conference tests before Big10 play begins, but I haven't seen anything out of this team so far to suggest they're not a tourney team, and not at least a 5-6-7 seed or so.

Just for reference as I watch the BIG12 often and follow them closer...Oklahoma isn’t good at all. They were a popular pick to be last or second to last in the BIG12.

Still a really good showing and Wisconsin is playing pretty darn as a team regardless of opponent. Oklahoma isn’t the most quality team though.

I mean Florida really isn't that good, right? Wisconsin has played themselves into a nice opportunity today to get a huge win. That would be a nice win to put on your resume.

The refs need to get their heads out of their back end this year. Utter lack of awareness when it comes to rules and seemingly sleeping during games. I’m the Wisconsin game a Wisconsin player dribbled it for a back court violation...but instead they called it tipped away from a player 10 feet away. The Marquette game a Louisville player shot a three pointer only for it to be called a two point shot despite being at least a foot behind the line. In the Kansas game a shot was called off and a goal tending wasn’t called despite the opposing player hanging on the rim when the ball was bouncing off the back board towards the rim.

I’m not sure what the current review rules are, but it needs to be expanded somehow. I don’t want to go to the monitor all night, but jeez talk about a bunch of blind squirrels reffing sometimes.

Didn't play that great and still found a way to come back and win. I like this team.
