2004 Year of the Pitcher

Because we look ahead and Baseball America kindly provided the list it's interesting to note that between both college and hgh school the top prospects favor the pitchers heavily. Counting the two way high school guys as position players I think there were 6 positions players total in both top ten lists. Veyr interesting and preliminary.

I watched Townsend, one of the pitchers from Rice, on Monday night. He has a low to mid 90s fastball, a knucklecurve and a change. He gave up two runs in the first and threw over 30 pitches, but ended up an out away from a complete game with 10 k's. He is a very emotional and competitive pitcher.

Thats cool...If he is the best available at our pick and we take him then I have a reason to latch onto him as a fave prospect right away.

My friend throws a knucklecurve...sort of. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Igor, I ran down some of the most promising '04 prospects, particularly the college pitchers, in an earlier thread (WAY before BA got to it http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ):

Rice is loaded with talent. They could have 3 starters go in the first round, and they always have a sleeper or two.

That's good for the Brewers since we'll probably take pitchers in rounds 1-5 next year. However, I do have inside info that the Brewers are also considering experimenting with an alternating Pitcher/Position prospect draft order. If that's the case AND we start with a pitcher we have a good chance (it's 50/50). Now if the Brewers stay with a more traditional 5 and 5 draft "strategy" then we are set. I don't even want to get into the college/high school options at this point because that just confuses the whole draft "strategy".

It will be interesting to see the draft strategy next year. No pitchers drafted in the first 5 rounds this year seemed to be safer considering past history. Looking at drafts 1998-2002, Sheets and Jones are the only pitchers taken in rounds 1-5 who haven't either been injured or busts.
