Jimmy Nelson [Latest (10/6): Nelson: No longer a “rehabber” -- post #161]

Madhawk23
Not pitching until September is like saying out for the year. You cannot count on him for anything at that point.

Not if you are playing into October.

October? I didn't think we have any regular season games scheduled past September.

Not an earth shattering update, but David Stearns was on MLB Network Radio this morning. He said that he still thinks Jimmy Nelson may be able to return to the mound in September. He reiterated the complexity of the injury and subsequent surgery.

If the Brewers are in the midst of a pennant chase it will be interesting to see what role they would trust Nelson with if all goes well in his rehab outings. I have a hard time envisioning him getting to the point where they would let him throw 100+ pitches in an outing this year.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I agree about the concern of 100+ pitches.

That said, once we get to Sept rosters expand. It would be a lot easier to use Nelson as a piggy-back with another inning-limited pitcher (ie Peralta or Burnes) and go 50 or 60 pitches multiple times.

After seeing how he does (& others do) they can then evaluate the best route to when deciding on the post-season roster round by round...

Moose Haas started Game 4 (down 2 games to 1) of the ALCS in 82.... hadn't pitched like in 6 weeks. Ballsy. Brewers won.

Starting Nelson in September is risky, but worth it you'd have to believe. Unless we pick up two starters in the next month and a few days, we'll need him.

To avoid disappointment, as fans, we should not be expecting anything, nothing, nada, zilch, nothing from Nelson this season.

Anything he does add that is positive is just a bonus. I am expecting nothing from him, as if he doesn't exist, the rest of this season.

I expect him to pitch, whether it's in the pen or start. That's a low bar since we were told June ish. If not, so be it, but I will be disappointed..... sliding into first. Irritating.

I'd say zero chance Nelson gets a start this year, but he could play very well out of the bullpen in September/October if he can get healthy, plus then the Brewers don't have to stretch him out. Save that for next year.

He wouldn't be stretched out enough to start and he wouldn't get the work in to really be trusted in the bullpen. Sure there is a small chance he helps the team somehow but to be realistic you cannot count on him for anything at all this season. Most likely he is not going to help the team until 2019.

I would expect if anything nelson would be a bullpen guy at best to pitch an Inning at best.

If he is pitching they could easily work him up to a starter role if they really wanted to. I really don’t see why he could only go one inning at best. You make it sound like they are going to bring back a half injured Nelson. If he is healthy he can work up a workload.

Not saying the Brewers will do that, but they could.

When someone has only done light jogging after a knee replacement, you don't immediately ask them to run a marathon.

They won’t bring him to the MLB level until he can throw 100%. At which point he would have multiple MiLB rehab appearances under his belt, where he could work up some stamina. If he can only pitch an inning he shouldn’t even be throwing a baseball at all.

This^^^

The guy has been throwing since spring.... he could probably throw an inning balls to the wall already (if no one cared about his health or future). If they work him through rehab and bring him up I’m sure it we be as a ready to go pitcher. All surgery’s are dofferent but this wasn’t Tommy johns.

I think I'd rather just let Jimmy continue his rehab. He had a complex injury to the shoulder. The few innings he might pitch in 2018 aren't really worth the risk.

Let him complete his rehab and get some rest.

My concern is that he gets in a rehab assignment before the minor league season is over.

There's a good chance Colorado Springs gets into the playoffs along with Biloxi so that would extend their seasons a bit.

It would be a lot easier to come back from a surgery like Tommy John's. UCL injuries have a very high rate of success. Shoulders are still very hit-or-miss. It wasn't that long ago that Ace pitchers like Ramon Martinez, Pedro Martinez, Brandon Webb, Mark Prior, Mark Mulder, and Alex Fernandez were forced to retire early due to shoulders that never fully responded to surgery.

What makes Nelson's injury unique is it was a non-throwing injury. The other guys listed above all had bad shoulders due to throwing a ball.

Seeing Jimmy throwing from a mound is at least a good sign - God knows AA suddenly has a lot of innings to have someone pitch with Medeiros, Ortiz dealt and Brown recovering from that ankle injury.

This is at least a little encouraging

Well...I don’t know about that. It’s suppose to take a month once he really pitches off a mound. So with every passing day is one day farther into September. It might take a little less if they just bullpen him...but regardless he is pretty much at where he needs to get pitching off the mound or he won’t make it to pitch this season.
