Brewers made 1 year offer to Cobb

Ulice Payne

How the heck do you equate "zero strikeouts is concerning" to "this guy is a bust" or "waste of $80 million" or "we're going to regret not doing whatever it took to get this guy" or "we're not even trying in 2018 if we don't add this guy at that price"?

Equating "zero strikeouts is concerning" to comments like those blanket conclusion drawing comments is such a reach it's beyond laughable. I take back my "good try" comment. This attempt is mighty weak.

Seriously, take a look and think this through. You're beyond reaching.

I never said you called him a bust or a waste of 80M. Now you're putting words in my mouth. I pointed out that it's unfair for you to call out people(s) who considered him a must have after one single start after you just recently criticized people for overreacting to one single game.

If you can't see the contradiction in that and actually own it, nothing I say will change your mind. And I'm not even a huge Cobb guy.

You took a clear shot at TJ based on one start and I felt that was unfair. That's all.

No, my goodness. I'm saying those blanket statements are those the likes of which I made the comment you quoted and threw back at me just now. My comment on Cobb was nothing like those. I said it was not a good start (as in not a good start to his 2018 season) and how can that be argued. And how the heck can such a comment lump me in with the panic mongers and bridge jumpers we have around here.

It's absurd.

Getting back to Cobb, zero strikeouts IS concerning. Runs and hits don't look good, but everybody has days like those, even Kershaw. But no strikeouts is kinda eye opening in nearly 4 innings pitched.

But heavens no, I'm not saying the guys is a BUM or will make Baltimore rue the day they signed him. I'm merely saying this start doesn't help those who thought he was a MUST ADD or the KEY to putting a playoff caliber rotation together. I just don't think he's a difference maker.

Why that's so offensive or over the top to you is beyond me.

"I'm merely saying this start doesn't help those who thought he was a MUST ADD or the KEY to putting a playoff caliber rotation together."

Nor does it hurt those who thought he was a must add... but

"I just don't think he's a difference maker."

Is your take so assign value to this start.

Davies has been a 9 era guy in April 2 straight years and finished at 4.0 or under. Cobbs 1st start happened after a few rotations passed. People stated he might not be ready due to his late addition... you dont say. I was very pro cobb and he'd have to be pretty bad or pretty amazing for 3 years to settle that debate before the full 4 is complete. Not 1 start. Not 4 ip. 4 years.

Only April 16th, so kinda hard to make any conclusions about the success or failure of what the Brewers did and did not do in the off season. However, I don't believe any of the pitchers that were mentioned as possible acquisitions for the Brewers (Archer, Cobb, Lynn, Darvish) have gotten off to great starts. Arrieta has been respectable.

Also, while Yelich has spent much of the early season on the DL, the key components of that trade (Brinson, Harrison, and Diaz) are all off to very slow starts at their respective levels. Brinson's numbers are brutal so far. Yes, I know, all these guys are young, but .131 BA, 1 RBI, 20/3 strikeout to walk ratio...that is beyond a "slow start" for an every day player.

User in-game thread post in 1st inning of 3rd game of the 2022 season: "This team stinks"

:laughing I can't imagine this place if we had signed Cobb and he gave us the two starts he has given the Orioles.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

He's probably getting rocked because he sat out so long. It's taking him longer to get into "game shape." Now the next thing that will happen (lol) is he'll get an injury like football players who show up late do.
