What news? This is Haudricourt's speculative quote:

"The Brewers haven't announced when they expect Nelson to return to the rotation but somewhere around the all-star break in mid-July would appear to be a good possibility."

I get that you are trying to make a pessimistic point, but you're still making a bit of a jump.

I do agree that they need another pitcher, though.

A take it or leave it deadline only works if a player is really interested in signing with you. I'm guessing the issue is they are not, otherwise a deal would probably have been worked out by now. Living here in Cub country, talk is Cobb really wants to pitch for Chicago, as he is familiar with their manager and pitching coach. If Cobb settles for a below market deal, it will probably be with the Cubs. Arrieta, who knows, but it doesn't seem like he's jumping up and down and waving at the Crew, saying pick me.

Yeesh! Another instance of a Cub fan feeling that it is the player's honor to play for their team. Knock me over with a feather! For a team with one title in a century, there sure is a sense of entitlement.

If Cobb really wanted to be there, he would have accepted the 3-year deal they offered him back in December.

I have no Idea if the Cubs are interested still in Cobb. I just know that the Cub fans working for me here really think the Cubs are interested in Cobb if he's willing to settle for a 2-3 yr deal. you can never have enough pitching, I guess.

Yeah I just don’t see that. You’re friend/co-worker is being a bit obtuse to their situation. Like I said above, their rotation is set and solid and they have enough depth and Cobb (or signing Cobb and putting Chatwood in the bullpen just makes no sense). They also are only $12 million or so below the luxury tax level, something they for sure want to stay below for next offseason with arbitration raises and to make a run at Harper (I think he’s going to end up there) so they aren’t a repeat offender going in to next offseason but instead can go over starting next year, which they are more than capable of being able to handle.

Phillies have had recent contact with Lynn... Come on guys, lets just get this over with.

Lynn to Phillies

Arrieta to Nats or waits til June

Cobb to Brewers

I get a strange feeling that your heart is going to be broken.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

To invest so much money and collateral in the outfield, and largely ignore the glaring need for starting pitching (save Chacin) would be an odd choice, to say the least. But you're right ... besides the repeated insistence from HighHeat19 that Cobb is/was very much on the Brewers' radar, there has been next to nothing from media and insiders linking the two. There's actually been much more scuttlebutt linking the Brewers to Arrieta.

Could a rotation of Anderson, Davies, Chacin, Woodruff and Suter/Guerra/Gallardo/Wilkerson/Miley (ugh!) keep the team in contention? Well, yeah, if Anderson and Davies prove that last year wasn't a fluke, if Chacin proves to be a solid innings-eater and if Woodruff lives up to his potential. I think that's too many "ifs" to throw at the wall, though. At this point, Arrieta isn't a world beater, and Cobb probably never will be, either, but what those guys provide is a more proven consistency if one or several of those "ifs" don't happen.

So we added young of the best young stars in the league and spent $80 mil on a CF but we're gonna go into the season with rotation of Anderson/Davies/Chacin/Two of Woodruff/Suter/Gallardo/Guerra/Miley/Wilkerson??

I don't buy that for a minute... With that rotation, we'll be sellers come trade deadline.

And we're just gonna right off the tweet from Nightengale the other day about us looking to add 2 SPs yet?

I get your frustration, but you're probably overstating how dire the pitching situation is. Because if it is that bad, adding Arrieta or Cobb isn't going to make that much of a difference.

I think the reality right now is, given the "on-paper" offensive improvement and the current pitching staff, the Brewers are a fringe playoff contender. The theoretical offensive improvement and slotting Chacin into the rotation should come close to equalling out the loss of Nelson for half the year. BUT ... that is assuming we don't see multiple core players regress significantly. Adding Cobb or Arrieta solidifies them as a firm playoff contender.

Even if there is zero regression from Anderson & Davies, who picks up Nelson's production until after the All Star Break? Woodruff and Chacin? That seems far fetched. And then Jimmy just picks up right where he left off?

Without signing or trading for a TOR then we should sadly look at 2018 as a rebuilding year and hope Burnes & Peralta step it up to be stars in 2019

I mean, I dont think the pitching staff is bad... I just cant imagine Stearns thinks we're gonna complete with the Cubs, Dodgers, Nats with our current rotation.

All our SPs (outside of Nelson) would be 3s or 4s on those staffs.

You are not factoring in any offensive improvement. This is a team that was in playoff contention until the 161st game of the 2017 season, and took steps to improve an offense that, while streaky, proved to be prolific last year. Yes, losing Nelson sucks, and it downgrades the rotation significantly, but not even close to being a bottom-dweller or deadline seller.

You're looking at the glass as half empty. Woodruff is the current #61 prospect per BA, and he posted a 3.12 ERA in his first 6 major league starts before faltering in his last 2. Guerra is one season removed from posting a 9-3 record and a 2.81 ERA in 20 starts. He's reportedly gotten most of his velocity back. Brewers were 9-5 in Suter's 14 starts last year. Gallardo and Miley have a lot of mileage on them but they are 32 and 31 respectively so a rebound year to respectable isn't completely out of the question. Wilkerson looked very good in his brief trial last year and has been and outstanding pitcher his entire minor league career. Burnes might be a better prospect than Nelson was 5 years ago.

The top 3 guys, Anderson, Davies and Chacin were a combined 42-29 last season.

There's a waiting game going on. Arrieta and Cobb are likely hoping for an injury to boost a very soft market for them.

Well, so would Cobb and Lynn, and probably Arrieta as well. The "on-paper" difference in talent between the Brewers' staff and those of the Nationals and Dodgers is significant. Adding Cobb or Arrieta moves the needle some, but those teams still have a big edge. The Brewers are closer to the Cubs if they grab one of those guys, though. Lester is getting old and showed significant decline last year, while Kyle Hendricks compares pretty equally to Chase Anderson. Obviously if they get good Darvish, he's better than anything the Brewers have. I think Davies can put up similar numbers to what Quintana is going to give you. Chatwood on paper is better than Woodruff/Suter as of right now.

No, not really. As it stands at the moment its OK, but if Anderson or Davies go down we are screwed. And pitcher injuries happen every year. That's unacceptable to me on the backs of signing LoCain and dealing a bunch of prospects for Yelich. I would guess that management is waiting to see if Arrieta or Cobb sign here before executing a trade, but if not it's pretty disappointing.

Ted rydquist is reporting he has a source saying we're signing Cobb yo a 3 yr 52.5 mil deal. Anybody else see this?

Mostly an NCAA writer. Kind of an odd guy to be breaking MLB news. But he seems pretty legit. I'd be surprised if the money was that high, but I like that it's a shorter-term deal.

The money sounds high enough to be believable. Literally nobody else out there on it though, but I don't know why a NCAA guy would be interested in breaking Milwaukee freakin Brewers news without a good source....

Why is that pessimistic? Do you have information to the contrary? Is saying he will be back around the ASB unrealistic in any way? If he is back around the ASB are you expecting him to be 2017 Nelson the minute he steps on the hill? If not, how long would it take, a month? Two? By that time the team is either going to be out of it or they will have made a move to get more pitching. It's not a pessimistic point, it's a realistic point. I don't think Haudricourt's report is as nearly speculative as you make it sound. It's not that hard to map out a trajectory that has him back on the mound in games at the ASB.

Maybe I'm misreading the level of condescension in your post but I fail to see the pessimism or the jump.

Joey, why is that every time someone starts talking the reality of the situation they are either pessimistic or frustrated? If this team was serious then they would have built the roster such that Woodruff would be the sixth starter going into the season with the likes of Gallardo/Miley/Suter/Wilkerson providing depth ONLY.

Damn I hope this is true about Cobb!! $17.5 mil per, if true.

But what kind of source would an NCAA guy have that Heyman, Rosenthal, Morosi doesnt have? That part I'm really confused about.
