Alex Cobb (Part 2)

I thought they get paid after every game?

Getting paid 162 times a year?

Yea maybe not... I could have swore I heard that before.

Maybe that's NFL.

That's definitely NFL. 16 game checks. Even at 162 checks, the Kershaws and Trouts would get more in one paycheck than most people get in a year.

So if he signed at mid-season he'd sign for 15mil but it's prorated to 7.5mil? Is the Team's salary hit on the 15mil vs the 7.5mil then? Just because he's actually getting a 15mil value contract but it's halfway in to the season? Seems a little awkward if true.

oh, and yeah if that too is the case, makes my idea relevant just as much.

That is how they usually announce them as. Wish I could think of a recent example. I don’t think it is fully tagged to your payroll, just what you actually pay is.

Not sure why they do it. Maybe for arbitration reasons? If you go to arbitration that team really valued you as a $15mil player not a $7mil player for last years salary. Maybe it is for basic comparison reasons? Not totally sure.

I would think it depends on the contract. If the contract says $15MM, it's $15MM even for that half season. Otherwise it would be worded to say $7.5MM in 2018, $15MM in 2019, $15MM 2020, etc.

Thinking about it I think it gets announced as pro-rated(at least when I see it) on one year deals. You can’t sign a guy to a half year contract. I think it has to be written up as one year even if it isn’t. So to actually pay a guy $1.5mil for half a year you would have to make it a $3mil contract. The arbitration theory also makes some sense.

Maybe not necessary on a Cobb deal.

So if someone offered him $250MM today, he would still wait until end of March? Got it.

My sources tell me that he will sign in the next few weeks, but if he doesn't, then he will wait until after the season starts before signing. He is looking at the Brewers, but if he doesn't sign there, then he will sign with one of 29 other teams.

P.S. I don't have any sources.

I would love for Cobb to sign with the Brewers, but I trust in Stearns to know what's best for the team.

Is this for real? If so, can you please provide odds?

I will feel much better about the Brewers chances in 2018 if they have a rotation of Anderson-Cobb-Davies-Chacin-Woodruff with Nelson coming than Anderson-Davies-Chacin-pick 2 of Woodruff-Guerra-Gallardo-Suter-Miley.

Suter is the perfect long man for this team which should mean Gallardo goes bye bye. In an ideal world, Woodruff takes #5 and runs with it and Guerra/Miley are depth in the minors solely in the event of injury.

I think DS knows his playoff chances are better with either Cobb or Arrieta are in the rotation. but I also believe he will not throw money away either.

Yeah, you could sign Arrietta to his demands and our playoff chances have increased for this year. But our playoff chances have more than likely decreased for 2020 and 2021.

Why do you say this?

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

50/50 chance this week and 50/50 next week too.

He WILL NOT be retiring.

A couple of clarifying points, just so that we all understand each other:

It's perfectly reasonable to question (or agree with) information/rumors that are posted. It is NOT acceptable to rip the poster or people who believe or don't believe what's posted.

If you want to respond to a rumor questioning its validity or agree with it, fine. Posting to question why someone is questioning the validity or expressing their belief of the rumor isn't necessary.

No personal attacks. That's always the rule.

So, on Cobb. Obviously Miley began to show his true colors today. Any chance that hastens a signing? I would think at this point he could be signed to a 2-3 year deal with a reasonable per year average.

He allowed a double? Arcia handles his job its 4ip 1 earned if Abreu can score on the double from 1st 2 down... otherwise its 2 stranded.

Wasn't impeccable but that's hardly a watershed moment.

I don't see cobb taking less than 16aav for 3. A 10 mil offers not doing it. 2 years will just jack up the aav.

I haven't seen any games this spring but a user on mlbtr commented Miley picked up a slider this winter. I don't know if he previously threw one but that might help explain the good start to the spring. Something new for batters to see.

It would be nice if the free agent camp they started would allow teams in to see how Cobb's splitter looks.

End of March, eh? I'm guessing he's not getting nearly what he wants and figures Screw them; I'm at least skipping spring training if I'm not getting paid anyway. It is probably a drag for experienced players.

Or it could be total b.s. that he's waiting until the end of March.

Maybe he's trying to iron out the split change and will have a showcase. Having that pitch back would effect his value.

Fangraphs has him with 5 pitches including a cutter he used over 10% last year. New slider, maybe. But he had a slider.
