Alex Cobb (Part 2)

Somethings gotta give with Cobb and Lynn... I cant see both sitting out til June.

I can see Arrieta waiting til he gets his $150 mil.

If Arrieta won't sign until/unless he gets 150 million or more, then he better start making retirement plans.

Waiting until the end of March is maybe to wait out if there’s injuries that could up his market. If Santana has a setback with the Twins, the Phillies think they are closer with how guys look in spring, any of the Nats guys, any of the Mets guys, Cardinals guys, Red Sox, Dodgers guys get hurt and probably a few more teams all could come calling. But also agree it puts him behind things in terms of being ready and acquainted with the team.

Cobb to sign last week of March.

With the Brewers? Honestly, this drawn out process has tried my patience. Hope it's with someone else! :angry

You'd rather the Brewers bid against themselves? I'm guessing as of now the Brewer offer is either tho only one still on the table or clearly the best and that Cobb is hesitating in hopes another suitor bids up the price due to injury between then and now. I would guess Brewer offer has expiration date that's pretty much in line with the timing of the signing of Lohse about 5-6 years ago. If he signs that late, he'd likely miss the first two times through the rotation which would extend the #5 battle into the season.

I agree and quite honestly, if your not in camp in thethis week, your not ready for the beginning of the season.

Who knows what his motivations are. But really, if it's a multi-year deal, in the whole scheme of things, who cares if he misses a couple starts in April?

How can anyone say for certain a particular player is going to sign a contract 4 weeks from now? I thought HighHeat said Cobb was going to sign like 2 Monday's ago and the Brewers 100% were going to sign him. How did that work out?

Yeah, kind of a crazy thought. I suppose it's possible that Cobb has conditionally accepted an offer, but is waiting to see if there are any big-name pitching injuries that would increase his market. But not a lot in this offseason has made sense, so I guess this is just throwing another odd log on fire.

This would be one of the craziest conditions for a possible contract that I can think of. I know you're just thinking of scenarios but I really hope Stearns and co. are not doing this. Either he wants to be with us or against us at some point here. Piss or get off the pot already.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Totally agree. It's nuts. But no scenario I come up with really makes any sense.

Yea that would be messed up with we have an agreement with Cobb but ONLY if better offers don't come.

Stearns wouldnt be that stupid.

It wasn't implied that he'd be signing with the Brewers, either. Just that he'd be signing ...

Yea true... Still any team to do something like that would be insane.

Did he say that's what he knows or what his opinion is? From his statement that could very well be what he thinks will happen.

Not really when you think about it. Teams make offers to free agents all the time that aren't immediately accepted. In theory, Cobb could have several offers on the table. Are the Brewers one of them? I'd say probably. But the offer is at their price, not his, so it does make sense for him to hold out to see if any better offers come in. It's arguable whether he's gaining or losing leverage, though.

Maybe it's a self imposed deadline for him. I'm sure he wants to work so maybe he just said I'll take the best offer at the end of spring training.

Probably the first paycheck begins that week. Any day missed beyond the end of March reduces his paycheck by 2 weeks. What do these guys get 13 paychecks in a season? Sign Cobb for 13mil a year that 1st paycheck missed is 1mil. Would be an easy GM decision to tell a player if he's not signed by then the 1st year's offer is reduced the amount of his 1st paycheck.

Contracts are already done that way. You sign at the full year amount, but it is pro-rated to how much season is left.

I thought they get paid after every game?

Getting paid 162 times a year?

So if he signed at mid-season he'd sign for 15mil but it's prorated to 7.5mil? Is the Team's salary hit on the 15mil vs the 7.5mil then? Just because he's actually getting a 15mil value contract but it's halfway in to the season? Seems a little awkward if true.

oh, and yeah if that too is the case, makes my idea relevant just as much.
