Updated. A few DSLers made the list this time. Ratings added for no other reason than just to show where there is some separation between groups of players.

It was really close between Hiura and Burnes, but it came down to Burnes being closer to the MLB level and therefore, less risky.

I'll start off with:

1) Hiura: Please do enough with your glove to stay at 2b. If he can he's not just our 1 but will assend to the top 30 in baseball.

2) Burnes: Seems the most sound of all of our starters in the minors.

3) Lutz: Fantastic start, writers saying he'd be top 10 in a redraft has me hooked.

4) Ortiz: Expecting him to take the next step. Issues seem easier to fix. Best Upside.

5) Woodruff: Fangraphs piece on horizontal accuracy has me a touch spooked.

6) Ponce: Workhorse, seems to be coming together. Hit the ground running in AA last year and I expect him to be called up when rosters expand. Big year on tap.

7) Peralta: ETA June. I'd have him higher if I didn't expect him to get quick switched into a Hader promotion BP role. Out pitches and deception.

8) Phillips: Elite defense carries his value. I see him batting down the order though and doubt 2017 was what we can expect but power should hold up.

9) Dubon: Capable hitting, although low slg, middle infielder. Defense plays, bat is enough. A real luxuary behind Arcia Hiura. I think he'll prove he'd start elsewhere.

10) Carmona: Tools and Youth. Comments about him being a 1st round pick if draft eligable drive the rank. Long way away but potential to be #1 in the coming years.

11) Erceg: Carolina surpresses but he wasn't young and I wanted to see more. Average and power needs to play up to become the 3b I want.

12) T Williams: RP but has the stuff. Want him in mke this year.

13) Houser: RP but has the stuff. Want him in mke this year.

14) Zach Brown: Cheeseheadinqc... you got me by a by a bit. No one in the lower system closed the year like Brown. 10 starts 60.1 ip, whip a shade over 1, k/ip, sub 2bb/9. Total package results wise. There are a lot of interesting names in wisconsin and carolina. He's my guy. I think he could end the year looking ready for AAA.

15) Stokes: Short sure. He's strong with a compact swing (cuz he's short). We love Grishams OBP, Stokes wasn't far off. If Harrison wasn't blowing up Stokes would have had more attention. He was the premium power bat in Carolina. Probably LF only but he can play. Another step forward with the bat and he could be something.

16) Kodi: Huge improvement last year and still a long way to go. Aggressive placement upcoming. Control, control, control... if he can continue to harness it he has the stuff to be a MLB starter.

17) Grisham: Great OBP but Ks too much. Contact not showing results, defense sliding down the spectrum. I'll hope the bat shows improved avg and power because while he's still young, I'm concerned he's a LF who can't hit like one.

18) Pennington: I see him as a RP due to his size but a great secondary offering makes him a leverage arm.

19) Feliciano: Here comes another aggressive placement for him. He held his own in the first one. Impressive athlete at catcher.

20) Gatewood: Time to add weight. 1b confirmed, you can fill out that frame now. Big improvement last year.

21) Ray: Prove it wrong please. You are a very depressing pick.

22) Jankins: Great finish, solid innings, fantastic GO/AO numbers. He's interesting.

23) Herrera: Too many walks in Wisco but a strong showing for the 20 year old.

24) Webb: Slow start but closed strong. Excited to see him this year.

25) Nottingham: It's getting better

HM:(not in order, too unknown or just good players and deserve props) Kirby, Lemons, Murphy, KJ, Garcia, Wilkerson, Perrin, Lopez, Derby, Ramirez, Ernesto, Rodriguez

1) Hiura - I had a difficult time choosing between Hiura and Burnes for 1, and I really look at them as 1A and 1B. Ultimately I gave the edge to Hiura based on an elite hit tool which could make him a very high level player.

2) Burnes - Far exceeding his draft position by this point, Burnes has destroyed minor league hitters at a rate not seen by a Brewer farmhand in a long, long time.

3) Phillips - He's been frankly buried on the OF depth chart and become forgotten with the Yelich and Cain acqusitions, and frankly, it's undeserved. People seem to have forgotten this was a top 50 prospect and the headliner prospect of the Gomez deal which also brought in Hader and Santana. Phillips did everything we could have hoped at the MLB level last year. He's more than a 4th OF prospect.

4) Woodruff - Much like Burnes, Woodruff has a recent history of minor league dominance. While his MLB results have been a mixed bag, he's deserving of a rotation spot at the MLB level.

5) Ortiz - He's arguably got a higher ceiling that Burnes. He didn't dominate in 2017, but he didn't disappoint, either. Why he's largely been forgotten is a bit of a mystery to me.

6) Peralta - His pitching dominance was only surpassed by Burnes last season, and his extension to the plate has resulted in eye-popping strikeout numbers that indicate future late inning reliever if he doesn't stay in the rotation.

7) Lutz - Unsurprisingly dominant in early play in Rookie ball, it's worth noting that many Brewer scouts wouldn't have been disappointed to see him taken ahead of Hiura in 2017.

8) Grisham - Grisham's OBP makes me more optimistic on him than some are, although his hit tools have yet to show much. Bear in mind he's always been very young for his levels. Still a valuable prospect.

9) Erceg - After a blistering start in rookie ball, came back down to earth a bit last year with everyone else in the Mudcat lineup. Still, this ranking reflects a lot more of what I think of the guys above him and not a knock on Erceg.

10) Williams - Bullpen prospects rarely get much love, but Williams' upside as a possible future late inning reliever sooner rather than later is too high for me to keep him out of the top 10.

11) Ray - It's undoubtedly a make or break year for the Louisville college prospect, and you'd certainly like to see the bat having developed further by this point than it has.

12) Ponce - Extremely good numbers after a promotion to Biloxi in late 2017, albeit in just 3 starts. If things break right for him, he could be the Corbin Burnes we're talking about at this time next year.

13) Gatewood - Bat started to show signs of the upside the organization hoped for when they took him in the Competitive Balance Round in 2014. Still just 22, a breakout 2018 would surprise no one.

14) Dubon - While the ceiling isn't particularly high, the floor is a speedy slicked glove middle infielder which should at minimum give Dubon a future on an MLB bench.

15) Medeiros - While still a marked improvement from his 2016 campaign, Medeiros' 2017 was a combination of dominance mixed in at other times with extreme struggles. There's still Josh Hader upside in this arm, but the clock is ticking. The Brewers may be forced to decide much earlier than Hader whether Kodi's future is in a rotation or pen.

16) Feliciano - Early on, looked like the next great Brewer catching prospect in 2017 before the bat came crashing back down to earth. Still just a teenager and young for Appleton last year, the bat will come back around, making Feliciano a potentially special prospect if he can stick at catcher.

17) Houser - While not ticketed for the MLB bullpen early on, early signs on the injury return front have been very encouraging for Houser. They may be careful with him for a bit, but seeing him in the Brewer pen in 2018 wouldn't be a surprise.

18) Carmona - While his young age may remind some of the Gilbert Lara signing, Carmona's bat impressed in the DSL. Though years away, the tools are there to become a well-rounded MLB prospect and move up this list quickly.

19) Diplan - Diplan was nearing top 100 status before a nightmarish season for the Mudcats. The club still thought enough of him to protect him for the Rule 5, and if he can fix his mechanics, he still could have a future as a late inning reliever -- or perhaps still make it as a starter.

20) Nottingham - By most accounts, while his bat still lagged behind expectations, Jacob showed a much better feel behind the plate in 2017 and took some significant strides as a defender. Another addition to the 40 man roster, he showed some good things in Spring Training and still may be viewed as a future backstop in Milwaukee.

21) Bickford - Bickford's complete tumble from any organizational rankings is a bit inexplicable to me, considering his 2017 was lost due to suspension and injury, not ineffectiveness. If his velocity returns, there's still a lot to like here.

22) Supak - This is lower than I'd like to rank Supak, who was one of the more consistent starters in the system for the first half of 2017. He's got a nice pitch mix, decent fastball velocity, and could very well find himself pitching for the Shuckers sometime this season.

23) Lemons - Caden is a bit of a project, but could end up being one of the better starting pitching prospects in the system when it's all said and done. His frame and mid 90's fastball were enticing enough for the Brewers to invest, and we'll get his first real taste of what's to come at this level in 2018.

24) Lopez - The former top 100 prospect continues the theme of starting prospects in the Brewer system who may be better suited for the pen. Whether it was simply a matter of the Colorado Springs air making him ineffective and snowballing into a loss of confidence or something else, he still has the stuff to provide yet another intriguing pen option if he can't develop into a potential MLB starter.

25) Harrison, KJ - While older and further developed than his counterpart Feliciano, Harrison also projects as a bat first catcher. He may have even more question marks for remaining behind the plate than Feliciano, but his bat, as shown in Helena, may develop into a strong enough tool to make him a formidable prospect at any position he winds up at.

26) Stokes - While I'm not as high on Stokes as most others in part admittedly due to his undersized frame, I can see the intrigue. The power has developed into a better tool than I think anyone could have anticipated from his stature, and he's an asset on the bases too, a player who does a little bit of everything quite well.

27) Brown - Still yet another potential late inning option in the near future, the Brewers still for now will give him a chance to develop in the rotation. Either way, he's one to keep an eye on as a more advanced college arm that could advance through the system quickly.

28) Ernesto - Just 17 years old, Ernesto seems to be a bit overlooked despite the near $2M dollar investment from the organization. A toolsy switch-hitting outfielder, it's far too early to project where Ernesto could end up in the outfield, but the athleticism is there for a fast high caliber defender who can hit for power and average.

29) Kirby - Despite having just a few innings of pro ball thrown, Kirby's upside is intriguing enough to me to keep him among my top 30. One can only hope that he's finally healthy enough to start showing flashes of the dominant lefty that the Brewers hoped for when they drafted him in 2015 if he can stay healthy and harness his control.

30) Rodriguez - Like Ernesto, Rodriguez is one of the newest prizes from the international scouting team. While possessing some similar tools to Ernesto, and being a switch hitter as well, Rodriguez is a bit undersized -- no surprise for a prospect who just turned 17. Still, the Brewers like his polish and track record at his very young age.

1) Corbin Burnes- Great 2017 season for Burnes. I'm really excited to see what he can do going forward. Hoping he can make the team at some point this year, but probably more reasonable to expect 2019 or even 2020 as his time of arrival. I think he can be an ace for us, at least a solid 2.

2) Keston Hiura- Hiura just keeps crushing at the plate. The only reason I didn't have him as my #1 was because of the question marks about his fielding. If he shows he can compentently field second I think he ascends to #1.

3) Brandon Woodruff- I see Woodruff as a solid 3-4 pitcher for us. Hoping things go well for him in the bigs this year!

4) Brett Phillips- Hit well last year, and can field any outfield position well. It's unfortunate to see him start the season in the minors. Maybe we'll make a trade sometime this season finding him some consistant time in right where I think he is best suited. Cannon of an arm.

5) Luis Ortiz- I think Ortiz is similar to what I expect from Woodruff, but he's a year or two behind him. Could be just a relief pitcher though.

6) Freddy Peralta- I think Ortiz and Peralta are really close to flipping spots here. I'd be fine ranking them either way.

7) Lucas Erceg- Great first year. Struggled last year. I think he can bounce back this year. If he doesn't, I'll be concerned about his production going forward.

8) Mauricio Dubon- I'm completely sold on Villar not being our answer at second. I think Dubon could be of help there as early as this year or next season.

9) Jake Gatewood

10) Trent Grisham-Formerly known as Clark. Saw him faceplant half way to third for an out a year ago in Appleton. I'll disregard the baserunning blunder in my ranking here.

11) Tristen Luntz

12) Taylor Williams

13) Adrian Houser

14) Aaron Wilkerson- Might see him in the rotation this season if someone doesn't perfrom or an injury occurs.

25) Corey Ray- Kills me to put him this low. But for me if he doesn't perform this year I don't think I can imagine him ever performing well. Sadly dissapointing to see him never put it together since being drafted.

I think Gatewood takes another step forward this year on his way to becoming our starting 1B in a few years.

Lutz and Carmona will battle for the #1 spot over the next few years.

Brewers Top 25 Prospects:

  • 1. Keston Hiura- 2B: I am extremely excited for this bat to be in Milwaukee. The ball just jumps off this kids bat.
    2. Corbin Burnes- P: He won’t have much else to prove and could be a call up come June.
    3. Brandon Woodruff- P: I kind of wanted to knock him down the list but it is hard to argue that he is not one of the top Brewers prospects, even though I hope he’s graduating this season.
    4. Freddy Peralta- P: Has all the pitches to make it to the bigs and stick in the rotation as long as he keeps that walk rate in check.
    5. Luis Ortiz- P: Another guy that has all the pitches to make it to the bigs but hopefully he can have a healthier 2018 and take the next step forward for the organization.
    6. Brett Phillips- OF: The defense is there but can he figure out how to make more contact? That will be the question surrounding Phillips as he tries to figure out a way to get to Milwaukee in 2018.
    7. Taylor Williams- P: Cannot wait to see what he does for the Brewers this season. He looks like he could end up being a closer-type pitcher and is a great story for anyone that goes through injuries.
    8. Lucas Erceg- 3B/IF: Was really excited after they drafted this guy but had a tough 2017. The skills are there and he could be very good defensively. Hopefully a good 2018 season will push the Brewers to start shopping Shaw if they see Erceg as a cheaper replacement.
    9. Tristen Lutz- OF: A powerful outfielder that showed a lot of patience last year. He is going to be a fun one to track. Does he have a down year like Erceg did after his entry or does he continue to mash minor league pitching? The talent is there.
    10. Trent Grisham- OF: Yeah the power numbers need to get better and hopefully they will but defense and getting on base are two things to be excited about for this young guy.
    11. Marcos Diplan- P: Has the stuff to be a late inning bullpen stud. Needs to find the strike zone more often if he’s going to find his way to Milwaukee someday.
    12. Corey Ray- OF: The talent is there but will he figure out how to put it together in time for the Brewers? He needs to take a large step forward this year to get back some of his “top prospect” value.
    13. Mauricio Dubon- 2B/IF: Defensively he seems like he could start for the Brewers today. Offensively, we need to see a bit more from the guy. Hopefully he has a strong beginning to 2018 as that will help the Brewers decide what to do with their three-headed “monster” at the big league level.
    14. Cody Ponce- P: Here is hoping for a healthy 2018 so we can see what Ponce really is. He was fun to follow in 2015 and it will be interesting to see if he can replicate his success in 2018.
    15. Troy Stokes- OF: Defense is not quite where it needs to be but it’s hard to argue with how much success he had a season ago. His body type will be played against him but that makes it all the more fun if he has continued success.
    16. Jean Carmona- IF: A young switch-hitter that is a middle infielder with pop. Boy that was fun to write. He will be fun to track this upcoming season in which he turns 19.
    17. Jacob Nottingham- C: Maybe it is too much of a hope factor but hearing that his defense has greatly improved has really got me excited for his 2018 season. He is another one that could force his way up to Milwaukee with having a breakout season.
    18. Mario Feliciano- C: Back to back catchers. Me likey! He was drafted with high hopes and hopefully we’ll see more power out of his bat as he ages but he held his own at A ball in Wisconsin a season ago. Another teenager for the Brewers that has a very high upside.
    19. KJ Harrison- C: Oops, I did it again. Another catcher as I completely wet myself (ex-catcher here). KJ had a great introduction last season with the bat but will need to prove himself behind the dish defensively. Reports are the arm is strong but receiving/blocking need considerable work.
    20. Jorge Lopez- P: After making the switch to the pen mid season a year ago, I am back on the Lopez train as I believe he can be a very good relieve in Milwaukee. This year will be telling though as he has been on the prospect list for close to a decade.
    21. Adrian Houser- P: Another guy that needs a season of health. He has an electric fastball and off-speed pitch that make you believe he will be in the Brewers bullpen if he can keep healthy.
    22. Zack Brown- P: Another guy with a lethal 2-pitch combo (Fastball/Curve) that many believe will be in the bullpen but he impressed as a starter a season ago and it will be a big season for him this year to continue to prove rotation worthy.
    23. Trey Supak- P: His stuff might not be electric but he knows how to get people out. He will probably begin in A+ but I can see him moving his way up the ladder with having three quality pitches.
    24. Phil Bickford- P: You wonder if it is the end of the line for Bickford as a top prospect due to his velocity dip but he’s been too good to not include on this list so here’s to hope. Figure it out, kid.
    25. Larry Ernesto- OF: After Lara, it’s hard to get too excited but after you read about this guy being a switch-hitter that has gap power and tons of speed, it is hard not to get excited. Plus that name. That name had to be on my list.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
