Damarious Randall to Cleveland Browns

I would guess there are big plans in store remaking the defense via FA. Hopefully they cut Clay Matthews too because he's served his purpose here. Heck if they really want to go big let Cobb and / or Nelson go and sign Allen robinson.

Pettine loves the idea of Matthews in his defense. His contract may be extended/restructured, but he isn't going anywhere.

Didn’t call this trade status quo, it was a generalized statement towards what we have done in previous years. You know, street free agents over real free agents and thinking you can fix every problem via the draft. That type of thing. And to the last part, how can we know if there is a plan?!? Lol there better be a plan to position this next years team to win a super bowl. It better include using picks to obtain quality players. Other teams have no issue with using a draft pick to get players and yet we treat them like each one will turn out to be a pro bowler. Too conservative in the past. Too many missed opportunities. Hopefully our new GM realizes this. Otherwise we might as well trade Rodgers and become the Browns of the nfc for awhile. Heck, we already have their bum QB. It will be really interesting to see where our franchise is compared to Cleveland in a few years. See which people we maybe should have retained.

Fair enough. I misunderstood your post as questioning whether they have a plan rather than 'we'll have to see what the plan is', which is a reasonable take.

I do, however, take issue with calling a guy who started as a rookie on a poor team a bum one year after being drafted in the 2nd round. If he still plays like Hundley in two years that's another story.

He just turned 22, so he's still extremely young. The Packers loved him coming out last year, and nearly took him with the 33rd pick. If he were still on the board at pick 61 last year, he would have been the guy. Now they are getting him in exchange for what they consider basically a throw-away player. If he doesn't pan out and improve his accuracy, they can cut him and move on in relative short order. Very little risk in this deal.

Also, he is considered a developmental QB, and there's a good chance we won't be the #2 guy this year. Look for the team to still sign a veteran FA as a backup. Hundley is as good as gone. If someone offers a mid-round pick for him, they'll deal him in a heartbeat. Could be released as well. Very disappointed with his preparation last year. Apparently he's a guy who says all the right things, but doesn't follow through.

Peavey, don’t take me calling him a bum too hard. I use it pretty lightly when referencing his play last year. Maybe I should think of a different word I suppose. He has big upside. After reading more scouting reports and watching some film of him, I’ve actually flipped on the trade. He will be a very interesting project for MM to have. And if it means Hundley doesn’t play ever again, I’m even more for it. :laughing

And I think it's fair to look at his stats last year and say that he didn't play well. But it's not like Hundley where he had 2+ years in the system and had some talent around him. Again, if he's called into action in 2019 and plays like Hundley did, then I'm disappointed with that result as well. In the meantime, they were likely to use a pick on a QB regardless, and this probably allows them to skip that and devote the attention elsewhere. Coupled with a Hundley trade/release and a veteran acquisition, they've at least addressed the makeup of the QB room without giving up much capital, if you buy that Randall didn't fit with their future plans.

Some chatter out there about a Hundley trade to Oakland or Tennessee.....

They had a trade all lined up with the Titans. Would have been Hundley and their 3rd 5th rounder (compensatory #174) for the Titans 4th rounder (#125). The Titans got cold feet at the last minute and backed out. The deal isn't totally dead yet, though.

The Raiders also made a call about Hundley. Would be likely for a 5th or 6th rounder.

Tells a lot of what teams think of Hundley. But it’d be nice to get anything and move on.

Packers had very high hopes for Hundley going into the season. When Rodgers went down, the thought was that Hundley would come in and keep them in contention for a devision title until Rodgers came back, thereby increasing his value to the point where he could be dealt for a 2nd rounder this offseason (similar to the Garappolo deal). Needless to say, that didn't happen, and they were beyond disappointed. They admit he is/was a failure, and are ready to cut bait and move on to a new developmental guy. They do believe he showed enough to warrant a trade for a pick, though, and that is what is likely to happen.

My personal opinion is that Kizer's absolute floor is Hundley right now. In fact, Kizer is probably already there.

According to Adam Schefter the packers have contacted Richard Sherman. They would probably have to cut or restructure someone's contract to make this happen though.

They made a call on Peters as well, but weren't will to give up anything more than a compensatory 5th for him. After dealing with the Randall headcase issues, they were hesitant to take on another potential malcontent. But Peters has the talent to be a stud in Pettine's defense. High risk, high reward.

My question about replacing Randall, where does the money come from? We want to sign old man Sherman and his two blown achilles? Trumaine Johnson? Malcolm Butler? These guys are not going to come cheap at all. They will all be quite expensive. While the Rams are out there acquiring two starting cornerbacks (and a free shot with whatever Sam Shields has left in the tank) we currently have an injured second round pick wonder performed in college.

I think I'm beginning to be done with McCarthy. He couldn't handle Randall? I mean let's just faced facts he's a highly successful NFL coach. I'm really coming around to the fact that he's lived off of Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. He hasn't done anything without them.

The money is there, it just needs to be found via either moving on from aging players or getting them to restructure. They technically have the space to sign at least one of those guys, but they'd have to make corresponding moves somewhere down the line. I've seen projections that a Rodgers extension could net them $10-15 mil in cap room as well, so the money is definitely there if they want it.

Why are people assuming that Sherman will get a big contract? He's had two blown Achillies, and hasn't fully recovered from the second one yet. He isn't getting $10M or anywhere near it.

He has plenty of teams interested, good corners are really pricey and there is plenty of cap space to go around in the league.

No idea how many years he gets but I'd be shocked if he came in at less than 10M a year.

Odds they cut Bulaga to free up some money?

I'm guessing they are leaning no.

Bulaga doesn't have a huge cap number for a starting tackle and if healthy he's worth the price.

Maybe if Spriggs had looked serviceable so far, but in mind he hasn't.

The Packers can grab ~$2.6 million if he restructures, so he'd seemingly be a good candidate for that. But they would get more if they just parted ways.

Really, the players that are going to be interesting to watch are Nelson, Cobb, Matthews, and Bulaga. Rodgers will be extended and that will free up cap, but they could gain more by working deals with these four. If they're not willing to talk, I could see one or more getting the boot.

That didn't take long, 3 years and 39M.

I know its a pipedream, but wish we could have pried Gordon off of them too while they are wheeling and dealing everything. I guess it's just the old "Randy Moss-GB" coming out of me.

Browns are cutting players from the previous regime they no longer feel fit their style. Gordon is a STUD when his head is on right, which it finally appears to be. They likely could have traded next to nothing for his rights last year at this time, but no one knew if he'd ever be back. But now that he's back in the fold, they expect him to be a legit All-Pro-caliber WR1 next year.

Reportedly a $5M signing bonus, $2M salary, $2M in roster bonuses, $1M playing time incentive, and $3M Pro Bowl incentive for 2018, the rest back-loaded and unlikely to achieve, so essentially they are committing $9-10M to him for 2018 with $1.67M allocated to 2019 and 2020 salary cap. Sherman hasn't even started running on a treadmill yet.

Another example of why the 49ers have been one of the worst teams in the league the last four years.

There are a bunch of veteran CB's on the market:

Rodgers-Cromartie joins a slew of top-to-mid tier cornerbacks in the free agency pool. Former Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman spent just one day on the market before signing an incentive-laden deal with the San Francisco 49ers. Sans Sherman, Malcolm Butler, Trumaine Johnson, Bashaud Breeland, E.J. Gaines, Brent Grimes, Morris Claiborne and Prince Amukamara lead this season's free-agent cornerback class. Of those top talents, the 31-year-old DRC is older than all of them but Grimes.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006
