Lucroy to A's - 1 year deal

Personally, I think the Luc comments re: Milwaukee get a bit blown out of proportion by many, and I think he gets a lot of undeserved ill feelings from some fans. His comments might not have sounded very "good" to some but you have to take it within the context of the situation that was at hand. It was clear he was going to be a big trade piece for our rebuilding team. He knew which way the wind was blowing. He openly wanted to be traded to a team with a legit shot at contending. There's nothing damning about that. He always was a guy that was pretty candid in his interviews, etc. I always just saw him as a guy saying how he felt, and what he felt was not much different than what just about anybody in his situation at the time probably would have felt.

I agree, and there is a touch of irony in holding a grudge against Lucroy for comments he made when this offseason the Brewers acquired a player (Yelich) who was publically vocal about his displeasure in a somewhat similar set of circumstances.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Mlbtraderumors reports that Luc had a 3 year/$21M offer from Colorado earlier - but turned it down.

I wonder if this type of thing will cause more FAs next year to take lower than expected offers early in the FA period...

What it looks like is happening is that the split between what FAs viewed as top-tier are getting compared to that next tier down. I still think top tier guys will get massive deals, but guys that are viewed as that step down (& lower) will probably be more inclined to take the first decent multi-year offer they get.

Moustakas, Lucroy, Cobb, Arrieta, Lynn -- in years past, they were locks for at least 4- yr deals for a lot of money, even though the deals would pay them into their mid or late 30s.

So next offseason all the big fish can still probably count on staggeringly lucrative long term deals, but everyone else will have to be careful. Seems like the distribution of FA dollars is getting to be a wider & wider gap.

Glad that Lucroy got a full time job. He was a great Brewer on and off the field. A one-year deal gives him a chance to rebuild his value. Sorry that the market has changed, but he's got a job while several free agents will not.

To each their own but he rubbed me the wrong way and he continues to. He never had to say what he did BEFORE our season was ever played. Was hoping he made a decision to actually go get a ring so I could at least believe him at his word but he ditched Cleveland and he’s now signed with a team that will fight to be .500.

He ditched Cleveland knowing he was going to be traded to a contender either way. He did so because Cleveland wouldn't promise he would be a full time catcher the final year of his contract. I don't blame him for wanting to maximize his value after playing most of his prime years for far less than his actual value. Dude was one of the top catchers in the game and they wanted to make him an average first baseman in a free agent year.

I would have said no too. People seem to remember a silly comment he made far more than how much he contributed to the team and how little we paid him for it. Had he been getting paid what he was worth I doubt we would have got back what we did.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Nobody forced Lucroy to sign that contract.
