2018 Wisconsin Badgers football

LouisEly

Apparently a spring roster was briefly posted on UWBadgers.com but quickly taken down, with UW officials saying it was not an official spring roster. Some notable things from that roster:

- Arrington Farrar was listed at OLB (hopefully the 4-star recruit can finally get on the field)

- Nick Thomas and Jake Whalen not listed (both were injured last year, heard that Whalen was retiring due to injuries)

- Billy Hirschfeld is no longer playing football (official) but is still in school finishing his degree

- Deron Harrell, who gray-shirted last year, was listed at CB

Hirshfeld would have provided valuable depth at DL. Their three starters will be some of the best in the Big Ten (Sagapolu, Loudermilk, Rand), but behind that they have nobody who has seen significant playing time. Pfaff has seen some mop-up duty, but Howe and Preston essentially haven't seen the field and Vopal was redshirted last year.

Harrell's move makes sense as WR is deep and CB is depleted. There was talk when he was recruited that he could play either WR or CB.

Just looked at the schedule...wow. Three nasty conference road games (Iowa, Michigan, PSU), plus the historically troublesome road game at Northwestern. That mid-September Iowa game could end up deciding the winner of the west division.

I expect an undefeated season out of this bunch. Stay away from the injury bug and it shall be a fun run!

Graham Mertz shut down his recruitment. Big win for UW.

This team could be mighty good. That schedule should help eliminate the 'they haven't played anyone' crap that we hear every year if they're in it at the end of conference play.

You'll still hear it. Their non conference schedule is...

New Mexico 3-9 last year

BYU 4-9 last year

Western Kentucky 6-7 last year

These 3 games are all played at home.

I think the Big 10 should only play 1 non conference game and play the rest in conference opponents.

Last years non conference were BYU, Utah State, and Florida Atlantic.

....and if you look at the other 9 games, you'll note that they're much tougher than last year in-conference. Road games against Iowa, Michigan, Penn State and Northwestern look better than any of the road slate that they had on the schedule last year, when they STILL would have made the playoff if they had beat OSU in the B1G championship. The SOS will be dramatically higher, unless Michigan, Iowa, and PSU all underperform expectations, which I suppose is possible.

Florida Atlantic ran the table in Conference USA and won their bowl game 50-3.

Biggest news right now is that Garrett Rand apparently blew out his Achilles and out for an indefinite period of time. Isaiah Loudermilk had knee surgery and is also out indefinitely, but it sounds like that was planned and he should be back this year. As I mentioned above, Hirschfeld would have provided valuable depth.

We'll find out how good Pfaff, Howe, and Preston are real quick. Heard they are trying to get Preston up to 270+ (currently 249).

It's incredible where Chryst has taken the program compared to where it was under Andersen. Alvarez was quoted at one point as saying we would've likely failed to make a bowl game in 2015 if GA stuck around. Chryst basically took one year to turn us into a perennial Top 10 team and a legitimate CFP contender. And now the recruiting classes are really starting to take off too. If we hang onto Logan Brown and some of our other top recruits along with Mertz, that 2019 class could be incredible.

Obviously there are two very tough road games on the schedule this year (Michigan and PSU) and a couple other ones that we could easily lose if we have a down week (Iowa and Northwestern). With that said, we have generally been a very consistent team over the past couple years, so I expect to go into the B1G title game with one loss and a likely CFP berth if we win the conference championship.

The “they haven’t played anyone” argument had a lot of merit last year. Didn’t play any of the top 3 teams in the B10 East at all, and the games against the better of the other teams (Iowa, Northwestern, and Michigan) were all at home.

If you think the Badgers have a tough schedule, take a look at what Michigan is facing. Road games against Notre Dame, Michigan State, Northwestern, and Ohio State and home games against Wisconsin, Penn State, and Nebraska. Harbaugh haters should have a field day because UM is going to have to have a great team and season to get through that with no more than 3 losses.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

I think you are overrating Iowa. Iowa lost their two best defensive players and their best OL to the NFL. Except for two pick 6's, Wisconsin completely dominated them in Madison. In fact, they literally destroyed Iowa's will by the 4th quarter. Sure Iowa traditionally comes up with one or two big upsets at home, but even if somehow the Badgers were to stumble there (which I doubt), Iowa doesn't have the horses to win the division.

For UW to make the playoffs they can't lose more than one regular season game though. So losing to Iowa would really hurt them in that sense and I'm sure it'll be a night game. Need that one so they can afford to lose one of PSU/Mich. Good thing is that this year the consolation prize for losing the B1G Championship game is likely the Rose Bowl.

Cephus taking a leave following accusations of assault...yikes.

These are always rough. Either he did it or he didn’t and having his college football experience ruined and name tarnished. Hopefully whatever it is gets worked out and they get to the bottom.

They want to bring charges after months of investigating. This isn’t like thi was claimed to have happened yesterday. Looks pretty bad for him.

You’re probably right in that it’s unlikely to blow over. It’s unfortunate for all parties, but I’m glad itresults from a thorough investigation and not the court of public opinion.

That would be my guess, same year the shoebox scandal killed them right?

Gotta sya I don't like us being ranked ahead of OSU. I'm sure it's all because of the Urban situation, but Urban isn't going anywhere and OSU is loaded. I'd rather be a bit further off the radar. With the tougher schedule this year there isn't any worries about being left out as long as they win the B1G with at most 1 loss.

"Tougher schedule" ??? this is a joke right? Western Kentucky, New Mexico, and BYU.... do you want them to play Whitewater too? They don't even play Ohio State.

@Iowa @ #14 Michigan @ #10 Penn St @Northwestern
