Speaking of UK tv series, The Fall is really good, set in Northern Ireland. Then there's a while genre of European crime dramas from Iceland, Norway, Finland....Italy that range from good to outstanding. Trapped is a good example, but we've seen 6 or 7 series during the past year, highly recommend. Yes, there are subtitles, but got used to that very quickly actually. They're cool because where they're set, actors all from in-country, and just a different feel than Holltwood made stuff. No, it's not artsy tv, maybe sounds that way. Just really good crime drama.

I'm glad people are starting to see all the cool stuff other countries are producing. The Fall is really good - first season anyway. I stopped after that. Gomorrah is great (on HBO Max) - Italian crime drama. Top of the Lake from New Zealand was really good. Babylon Berlin is a german series that's excellent.

So I've made it through the rest of The Wire and half of Breaking Bad (yes, I'm perpetually late to the game on shows). Big fan of Bad, and it's one of those shows (like The Wire) where it feels impossible to turn it off after only an episode or two each night.

Any reason not to jump right into Better Call Saul next? Alternately, I've got a promo deal for HBO right now. Any other HBO shows beyond those I've seen (Sopranos, Deadwood, The Wire, True Detective, Boardwalk Empire) that are worth my time next?

Loved both Six Feet Under & the Leftovers, two of my all time favorite series for sure.

John from Cincinnati is an interesting deep cut that is only one season, but it's David Milch so if you liked his other stuff maybe give it a shot.

Also really enjoyed Painting with John that just finished up. Six episides at 20 minutes each, so its pretty much like hanging out with John Lurie for a couple hours on a tropical island & listening to him tell stories while he paints or has other little adventures.

"Better Call Saul" is arguably better than "Breaking Bad." (They're both great!)

Don't forget to try to find "El Camino" after you finish "Breaking Bad." It's worth the two-hour run time.

+1

BTW, in the middle of BB rewatch with my wife, since she never saw it.

Clarice on CBS is a solid spin off / extension of Silence of the Lambs movie.

I've been trying to stay interested, it's ok, but I can see myself falling off from watching...

Update:

My wife and I both gave up on this show. No mention of Hanibal Lector.....EVER! Just Buffalo Bill. (I read someplace that they were not allowed to mention the name Hanibal Lector for copywrite/etc reasons)

The storyline just wasn't engaging, and wasn't that interesting.

I enjoyed the last episode of Superstore. I won’t ruin it for anyone who has it DVR’d, but I was pleased it received a proper finale.

Top 10 network sitcom of the 2010s, easily.

Agreed. It was an extremely satisfying finale.

Satisfying but corny. The last 5 minutes was basically a rehash of the last 5 minutes of The Office.

Finally started watching The Wire.

First couple episodes were slow in developing, and I was wondering why the show had so much hype.

Now that I am 8 shows in, I can't stop watching.

Yea, one you watch The Wire and BB you become a TV snob. I will never watch anything on network TV, even the "cable" channels way more miss than hit.

It will be interesting come fall when I imagine a ton of Netflix, Prime, etc. series will have new seasons. Until then, I'll continue down the Euro police drama genre.

A few quirky comedies from the UK:

Derry Girls on Netflix - set in the early 90's in Northern Ireland during The Troubles. Really funny once you pick up on the accent. Great soundtrack.

Stath Lets Flats on HBO - good one if you are a fan of the Ricky Gervais version of The Office

Shameless. Series finale was tonight, man I'm going to miss that show.

I loved the show but was a bit disappointed by the exit. I don't know why but it felt empty.

If you guys like The Wire, check out The Shield.

You can thank me later.

Been telling everyone I can for years to watch this show. Shield is my #1 show ever. They've never been good about getting it out and available though. Think it has finally gotten on Hulu in the last year or so though, if I remember correctly.

Shameless has been a great show, heck of run they had. It kind of floundered a bit the last few years and I did a lot of eye rolling on some story lines the last few years, but it was still good. I'd call the finale 'fine'. I'd have preferred more firmly tied up but overall it did the job and wasn't awful/stupid or anything to ruin the show's legacy. Basing it on Frank's dying makes a lot of sense. I was surprised they couldn't get Fiona back for the ending or address her at all, basically seemed weird to do this whole year basically acting like she didn't exist. I saw they've had a lot of issues with filming during covid though so have to cut some slack that they did the best they could given the situation.

She was originally planned to have a large role in the finale, but they were filming and there was another lockdown issue ordered in NY and Cali...so she couldn't get to the set to film.

She was going to come and help them sort out Franks "estate." I was kinda hoping Lip would find that bar of Gold in the backyard...or they'd sell the painting, but I guess them getting rich at the end of the show would really kinda ruin the show.
