At what point do we run out of comic book stuff to make movies and shows about? It seems like everything is either comic book related, remake of 90's sitcom, or let's see how crazy of a concept we can come up with and go with it.

My wife and I are enjoying watching the entire run of “Hogan’s Heroes.” We’ve got 99 episodes remaining—our goal is to be done by Opening Day. (Sorry, we won’t binge watch, but we tend to watch 2 or maybe 3 episodes every night.)

 

It’s not uproariously funny, for sure, but I’m enjoying it.

Look how quietly they churned through Spider-Man. Toby Macguire last played Spider-Man in 2007. Tom Holland started playing Spider-Man in 2017. In between was Andrew Garfield. 3 separate franchises in the span of 10 years.

I will give Wandavision another episode or two. The first couple better be setting up something good because they really sucked.

Agree. Wish they would have cut out one. I didn't really like the series at all until towards the end of the third episode. I would have been ok if they had made that the first.

 

I actually liked the first three episodes. Very campy -yes, but an interesting tip of the hat to other old TV shows (i.e. Dick Van Dyke - separate beds, Bewitched, Brady Bunch, etc..). My family was amused by them while waiting for the plot to develop. I've only finished episode 4 or 5, so its interesting tying certain events back into the newer episodes.

Shazam was surprisingly really good.

 

Hollywood is devoid of new ideas and is just mostly cookie cutter movies or remakes.

 

I would love to see a Metal Gear Solid movie but the creator of the game has said no on this. Would be an interesting sci-fi action movie kind of a Rambo meets Bond with robots and over the top villains.

I'd pass on video game movies myself. No interst what-so-ever.

 

I do like the Marvel movies, but they are over-doing it imo.

Finished season 1 of The Wire over the weekend. Absolutely fantastic. Thanks to those that suggested it- I've heard very good things over the years from a lot of people, but glad I finally dove in. Very excited for S2.

 

A lot of people don't like season 2, fwiw. Mostly due to one of the characters. Just a heads-up, hang in there just in case you don't love season 2 quite as much.

 

It took a whopping half an episode to figure out who you were referring to....

Sure, I'll agree, pretty simple humor and plots and didn't really age well. Not up there with other award winning and ground breaking shows of the era like All in the Family or MASH. However, I completely get the warm, nostalgic, happy feeling of watching some of those old shows. Was flipping around channels the other day and stopped on an old Starsky and Hutch episode. One of my favorite shows growing up. Had a poster on my wall with the car. The over the top close ups and drama are humorous now, but it still brought back some memories.

 

I will also agree that there are some great things to watch now and so much selection. Also, being able to watch whenever or binge watch several episodes is convenient. However, I do miss many things about the Network TV era. What I miss most were the shows that everyone watched at the same time. The "water cooler" talk the next day. I still have pretty clear memories about the day after the original airing of Seinfeld's "The Contest". I remember talking about it with people I work closely with as well as overhearing other people talking about it on the elevator and in the cafeteria.

 

My work is having a virtual "happy hour" later this afternoon. Most likely there will be conversations regarding shows that people are binge watching. But for most of the shows it will be 2-4 people (out of 8), that have watched it, are currently watching it, or plan on watching it. But none watching the same episodes at the same time. No "did you see 'name of show' last night?!" Those days are over. Outside of reality shows, I feel like maybe "The Office" was the last show like that? Maybe "Lost" (never watched) ?

Game of Thrones was probably the last appointment level TV show where you had to watch live and it was the main point of discussion the next day. I think I said it on here or at least to friends how I think GoT might be the last one like that. The last season of Breaking Bad had it too

 

I guess you could say Tiger King though, hah

If Netflix would stop releasing full seasons of shows all at once I think there'd be a better chance for that to happen again.

I doubt it will be the last. I think someday the world is going to at least approach normalcy, and I think people are going to want to have real face to face discussions after spending so much time without them. Somebody's bound to be clever enough to write a series full of twists and cliffhangers and sex and what have you that people love.

 

I'll admit, I don't really care if it happens or not. So many times it was awkward being the one person in a group who had no interest in or knowledge of game of thrones whatsoever.

 

Breaking Bad was fun but I watched it all way after the fact.

In the slower "Downton Abbey" British genre, All Creatures Great and Small on Amazon is pretty delightful. Wife, 12 year old kid, and I are all enjoying.

Yep. There were a couple of really interesting literary TV adaptations that came out last year. Plus, one of my favorite shows of the year was adapted from a series of TV ads for a soon-to-be defunct network. The reboots and superhero shows get a lot of attention, but there are plenty of other things on from all sorts of different sources. Plus, the streaming services have made it easier to watch shows from other countries as well.

 

Also, I thought Season 2 of The Wire was a success despite that character. It might have been its fourth best season, but that would still make it the best season of most other shows.

I enjoyed it. I watched it awhile ago and I think it may have taken a few episodes for me to get into, but it's a weird (obv. lol), dark show, with some good intense moments.

Hollywood comes out with a lot of good stuff. It could be argued we are (or just were) in a golden age of TV. It's just the big blockbusters that are all the same thing.

 

I feel like maybe the golden age of TV ended with GoT. Maybe it's just TV burnout from too much time at home during Covid but I struggle to find any shows worthy of binge watching anymore. I probably have about 6 shows I am in the middle of but I still turn on the TV and can't find anything I want to watch. Was just looking at the Emmy's from last year and maybe Succession is something I should pick up again but like so many other shows I just sort of burned out on it after a season or 2, they just don't suck you in like Breaking Bad or the Sopranos did. I did recently watch The Newsroom for the first time and got through that pretty quick, only 25 episodes or so not sure why it was so short lived.

 

Maybe it's time for a swing back to movies being the big thing again but yeah have to get out of this comic book stuff.

You may be right. The last year hasn't been that great but I'll throw Better Call Saul against any show out there right now.

 

If anyone is into mafia crime dramas (and doesn't mind subtitles) there's a good one on HBO Max called Gomorrah.

For sure, I had Hulu live which didn't have AMC so waiting for season 5 on netflix right now. It's been so long since season 4 that I forgot how good it was until you mentioned it, I probably need to rewatch to catch up. That is a problem with a lot of shows these days, it shouldn't take 2 years for a new season.
