Broxton getting more interest than Santana?

Hoping to draw the Broxton talk here:

If Broxton was worth anything even remotely close to a Top 100 prospects he would have been gone a long time ago.

Not necessarily. Sometimes a team needs to see what they have in Spring Training before deciding if it's time to make a move. Like I said in the other thread, I'd bet he goes sometime this week, and while the return isn't going to be gangbusters, it'll be something most here are happy with.

As long as you find a team that wants to start him. If you can only find a team wanting him for a platoon/competition or depth it will be basically nothing.

My initial ask would be for about 20 million in prospect surplus value which is about equivlent to a back end top 100 pitcher, but I wouldn't expect to get that in return. But to move him I'd need about 6 to 7 million dollars in prospect surplus value back, which would be equivalent to "one role player prospect plus one fringe prospect" or "three fringe prospects." Would rather just hold onto him as a fifth outfielder or an insurance policy I could stash in the minors for at least one more season if that final asking price isn't met. He's near minimum salary and has an option year left so I don't see why there would be any urgency to move him.

Broxton having that extra option helps his value a bit. At minimum, he's a well above average defender with great speed and power. The best value we can get for him will be a rebuilding team that can dream on his upside.

I would think a contender who is close to the luxury tax threshold and has a hole in CF may have interest as well. His cheap contract is a solid selling point.

Broxton's power/speed combo is undoubtedly an attractive trait to other teams. But if the free agent market this off season has shown anything, one trait/tool players are not in real high demand. Broxton's value will be tied to his ability to play defense in CF. Solid defense with his power and speed will overcome weak OBP skills. If he remains mediocre in the field his value is more of a 4th outfielder bottom of the 25 man roster type player.

What are some potential landing spots for Broxton? I glanced around the league quickly & came up pretty empty. Lots of the mid-level contenders seem to have comparable or better in-house CF options, & I'm not sure which major contenders Keon would start for.

Oakland, Cleveland, Kansas City and San Diego all make logical sense to me. San Francisco could use an athletic CF to patrol that huge OF.

I would tend to agree with you.

My earlier comment (on the other thread) about being on someone's list was more in reference to an organization top 30 list.

SF would make sense if Keon hit left-handed. Their starting group of: Andrew Mc (RF), Austin Jackson (CF), Hunter Pence (LF) all hit right-handed. Have to believe they want the depth guy to bat opposite.

I think the chance at KC was sunk when the Royals signed John Jay. After adding Jay, Duda & Moose, I see the other remaining depth/ support roles going to kids for development as the rebuild gets underway.

We have talked the overall Clev situation enough. I doubt we see a move there (this week or by end of spring training) unless a couple more outfielders get hurt & will miss start of the season.. Edit: ICYMI- When Mejia got sent to the minors yesterday, Tito announced that instead of 3B, Mejia would also be getting time in the OF to help his position flexibility. Tribe Mgmt is already comfortable while the bat of the Mejia. If he can play another position (1 of need), I doubt they try to acquire Keon.

Oakland is interesting but I believe they will bide their time as well.

I think it's important to note that Keon still has 5 full years of affordable control which could make him attractive to *any* team. He could be a good match for a non-contending team that has a MLB asset we could use. Perhaps someone has a C, 2B, or RP that costs more and has fewer years of control left that they would be willing to swap our way.

Oakland has Boog Powell & SD has Manuel Margot. Neither one looks like a world beater, but both are young & inexpensive & I don't know that Broxton's a clear upgrade. SF signed Austin Jackson on a cheap 2-yr deal -- again, not great but would Broxton really be an upgrade?

Cleveland has Bradley Zimmer, their 2014 1st rounder who hit well in MiLB & made his big league debut last year.

KC actually looks like a good fit! Their OF looks like a mess. I wonder if there could be a deal there -- maybe Broxton+Santana? The Royals' depth chart currently lists Alex Gordon at CF & Jorge Soler at LF. Broxton/Santana are probably clear upgrades on both.

Not trying to be contrarian, but I'd already looked at the non-KC teams thinking they might make sense.

EDIT: second thought on OAK, it looks like Powell is a lefty bat they've shielded from LHPs. Maybe Keon would make sense there as the RH half of the platoon & 4th OF.

His power and defense would play in the corner outfield as well, if someone was looking for an athletic upgrade.

If Juan Lagares, with his contract, is drawing trade interest...then Broxton is absolutely drawing interest from similar teams. Broxton is probably a more talented player than Lagares as is. Factor in the team friendly contract and option, it's a no brainer.

I seem to remember that Broxton really struggled in LF at AAA (he had several errors in one game?) but played better in CF. Maybe he would adjust, but it seemed that he felt more comfortable in CF. Probably could read the ball off the bat better.

Santana's done nothing this spring to make himself more attractive in a deal. 17 K's in 29 ABs? He's making Counsel's job easy.

Yet hitting a very respectable .276. Santana is what he is ... a lumbering corner OF who provides power, a decent average and a lot of Ks. Nothing he's done this Spring Training is disproving that.

Your description is probably why he is still a Brewer. Just too many of those guys out there these days.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Zimmer, even if a high pick, might want to be shielded from RHP if they can. Cleveland makes some sense.

The Roylals likely aren't going to be interested in Santana (or maybe even Broxton). They're doing a good job of signing some of the FA afterthoughts to 1-year deals, but I doubt they'll be trading away any of their future for 2018 players. Maybe Broxton since the trade would be small, but not Santana.

San Diego also is a no-no with Margot in there as noted in your post. He's a pretty highly regarded prospect. They'll have Myers and Renfroe starting in the OF with him a lot. All 3 of those guys are high K righty bats. Broxton doesn't make much sense there.

The Giants already signed Austin Jackson for CF. I think they'll probably just roll with the speedy Gorkys Hernandez out there as a backup for defense unless something happens. McCutchen can play there for short stints in a pinch.

Oakland makes some sense. Cleveland as noted above also does.

I do think Keon has some value given the affordable contract and versatility/speed. I also think that he's not going to fetch a ton given that he's probably a righty platoon bat ideally. It'll be hard to find a happy medium between a team like the Giants perpetually willing to just sign Austin Jackson to fill the gap for 1-2 years rather than give up our perceived extra value on Keon because he has 5 years of control. The catch-22 is that I'm not sure anyone's willing to pay for 5 years of control for a RH platoon bat. Just sign Austin Jackson or any other similar player to a 1-year deal every year.

This is entirely the reason why I don't want the Brewers to trade Broxton. First off, he isn't going to get you much of anything in a trade, as a high K, low avg, low obp, quick (but dumb) base runner, average defender right handed CF. He has a lot of control, and has major league time. If you have some sort of disaster where 2/3 or 3/3 outfielders get hurt for some amount of time, you have another guy you can slot in the outfield if you option him down to the minors. I wouldn't mind if he came in and played for a few weeks if there was some sort of emergency, you have the option available to you, and it provides some minor league depth. And who knows? It's not like I hate the guy as a person, he's just a bad baseball player right now. If you held onto him, there's always the possibility that he could get better. I don't want to trade the guy for absolutely no reason, when he isn't required to be on the MLB team at all for the year, you can put him in the minors and he can sit there just fine.

Well something is better than nothing and 1 year of broxton covering the same depth role as phillips is all he gives you. Next year zero options and its highly unlikely he has a MLB spot so he gets cut like scooter.

I'll take something instead of doubling down on OF depth in AAA.

Provides depth for this season and to begin the next. Allows for flexibility if they do want to move a player. No reason to move him if the deal isn’t right.
