Wanna see the most moronic rule change proposal you'll ever see?

Probably an off the cuff comment, probability along the lines of "so you're telling me there's a chance". I doubt this got any serious discussion.

I like the general idea that MLB is willing to be creative with possible rule changes. It's important for baseball to continue evolving. I could see this rule being implemented in the all-star game. Maybe instead of changing the batting order, one could simply start at any point in the batting order (e.g the leadoff spot).

A more realistic rule change would be to allow a certain number of players to come back into the game after they have been removed. It would make things a little more interesting for lineups after the DH is inevitably implemented in the NL.

This is where I think the game could be headed. And I could probably talk myself into being ok with it. Lots of strategic options to explore by maybe letting a team take 1 or 2 players out and re-insert them.

Dara Lind summed up my feelings on this pretty well.

The first reply to Eisen's tweet about the proposed rule change... :laughing

It's a great idea, with the caveat being that the replacement hitter and the manager be devoured by tigers if the game isn't tied as a result.

How about “ghost runners”? You know, like when you don’t have enough guys to play? You can have a ghost runner on second then when someone gets a single the two teams can argue about whether the ghost runner would have scored or not.

This is obviously the future for MLB and what it will evolve into. People like watching hitters hit so now the DH is there half the time so people don't have to watch pitchers hit. But who enjoys watching Alcides Escobar hit? Who enjoyed watching Yuni Betancourt play shortstop? Who enjoyed watching Johnny Estrada run the bases? And how stupid is it, that if a player is substituted when ahead because he is a defensive liability, that the player cannot be reinserted into the ballgame later if offense becomes necessary? After all, in all the other major sports a player can come back in if removed from the game for an injury check, rest or whatever the reason may be. The value to the fans is so much greater if they can see 9 at-bats from Yelich instead of 3 at-bats by Yelich, 3 at-bats by Arcia and 3 at-bats by Pina. And if you are an owner paying Bryce Harper 40 million per season, isn't it a much better investment to not have him limited to something like 680 plate appearances but possibly get him over 1400 plate appearances per season! Simple way to make all of this happen would be for managers to be able to wipe the slate clean every half inning and reset the lineups. If a player is substituted for in that half inning then he is out of the game for the rest of that half inning only. Purists will say it ruins the strategy of the game but instead it would make it much more fascinating. The manager wouldn't run the same 1-4 hitters out there every inning, it would likely change frequently based on lefty/righty pitcher matchups or the way certain hitters have performed against certain pitchers in the past. And the TV folks should love it, premier hitters up every inning should keep viewers interested from pitch #1 to the last pitch of the ballgame. Just think. Only having to watch a great defensive shortstop that can't hit only get about 50 plate appearances a year instead of 450. Never having to watch slow running catchers run the bases. Never having to watch a great offensive player perform like a complete hack in the outfield. And the viewers wouldn't have to be limited to watching that lefty specialist only get one out per game. If he's used in the seventh inning, now he can come back in the eighth inning and be used again.

If MLB does something like this, they lost me. DH in one league, not the other, ok. HFA based on the ASG, ok. Instant Replay....ok now I'm concerned. Stupid rules to speed up a game not designed to be on a clock, now I'm more concerned. But institute a rule this stupid, will be tough for me to hang in there as a fan.

I don't think there should be mid-inning pitching changes except to take the starter out. Both speeds up the game, adds offense AND is more traditional. LOOGYs and ROOGYs are dumb. Be a man. Get 3 outs.

I doubt this was meant to be made public. I think this is a case of people being asked to brainstorm regardless of how much sense it makes. I could see someone pointing out sometimes the least interesting players are is the most interesting points in the game asking how to change that. So they all throw out every possible idea to change that and this was one of them.

I'm glad to see the game moving forward. Three divisions & a Wild Card, the Play-in game, Instant Replay, equal sharing of internet revenue; all changes meant to move the game forward & keep it relevant to the average fan.

This idea, however, is goofy. But I'm still glad that all ideas are being considered.

Reduce the game to 6 innings and you're on to something! Oh boy a good pitcher those days is a 5ERA with 90IP on the season.

Yeah! Women are inferior and can only get one out! GOOD INSULT!

I believe the inference is man vs boy....not woman. A woman couldn't get one out, just keeping it real.

Yea, I hit against women's softball pitchers in college. That was no fun, they can really bring it! Rising fastball is a weird thing to hit. That said, the mound is closer. There's a reason there hasn't been a woman in MLB. Of course, I wouldn't be able to get MLB hitters out either.

Oh, I'm not inferring that a woman could pitch in MLB. Just thought it was funny.

Also, the mound is closer, but the girls that hit are still facing fastballs at 75 mph from 37 feet away. They have less reaction time than MLB batters that face 100 mph heat. That's insane.
