The Texas Rangers claimed recently turned 24-year old 3B/1B prospect Renato Núñez off waivers from the A’s (he’s out of options). While Núñez has certainly struggled at the MLB level, he has some serious power potential. Oakland appears set at the infield corners for the foreseeable future, but losing him for nothing could come back to haunt them.
Not just “at Night” anymore.

Just finished reading the SI article about Tommy Pham. I know who my most hated Cardinal is going to be when Yadi retires. Pham seems like a real prick.

It is funny/ironic how two people can read the same thing and have completely polar opposite reactions. That article made me greatly admire Pham and his mental toughness and ability to rise above adversity.

I can see how you would get that. What really rubbed me the wrong way was how very poorly he handled how the organization handled him. If he really said the things he said he said to Cardinals management, he's very lucky they didn't release him or bury his career in A ball. There's confidence in your abilities and then there's being a jackass when you don't get what you want. He seems like an awful lot of both. And, I'm far from a prude, but anyone who uses MF in every other sentence just sounds like a real crap person.

Blue Jays send out a tweet that due to the roof, tonight's game will be played as expected. Ice falls from CN Tower onto Rogers Centre roof, damaging it. Blue Jays delete first tweet and send out another tweet how they are working with CN Tower services and Toronto Police to assess conditions and the viability of playing tonight's game.

Miguel Cabrera is hitting .235 with a .675 OPS so far. Last year he had an OPS of .728. He's owed $30M this year, plus $154M over the next five years.

That's just brutal.

Amazing how fast he's gone downhill. He turns 35 on April 18, but just two years ago he had a .956 OPS.

I guess it's not killing Detroit as there is no way they are contending for a few years and their payroll won't be really high (especially when Zimmerman and VMart's contracts are finished) - so they just can let Miggy play and eventually get 3,000 hits.

It's just sad to see a guy who was so good at hitting just go downhill so quickly.

Not really sure you can read anything into it because it's still only 43 at bats and they've only played games so far in Detroit, Chicago and Cleveland where it's been even colder than it normally is in April.

He's also started slow in several of his dominant years, so maybe it's the cold weather early on and once it starts to get warmer, he hits.

Remember when the Brewers were in the American League? Bartolo Colon does, because he pitched against them when they were in the AL. He also almost threw a perfect game today.

When Ronald Acuna joins the Braves he will be the youngest player in the league and actually born after Bartolo Colon made his debut.

Adam Vinatieri laughs as he's already played against someone born after he started his career.

In an upcoming interview on HBO, Bryant Gumbel questions Derek Jeter on his priorities as an owner and whether the Marlins are tanking, Jeter gets defensive and calls him mentally weak. I really feel for Marlins fans if this is how their ownership is going to act. Jeter probably just isn't used to anyone questioning him about anything.

Manaea no hit the Red Sox last night, on a semi-controversial call, as Benentendi was called out for running out of the baseline on his way to first base. To me, at least, he was clearly out of the line. It was the right call, and not really controversial.

Four teams in major league baseball have a winning percentage lower than the 2003 Detroit Tigers (.265) - Reds (.150), Royals (.211), Tigers (.235), and Marlins (.250) with the Orioles (.285) close. (I don't count the 1962 Mets as they were an expansion franchise - with very different rules than when MLB expanded in the 90's - but they were .250)

I wonder if this year a team will not win 40 games. The Royals and Tigers are in the same division, and the Orioles have Tampa in their division, but the Reds and Marlins are in tough divisions.

Don’t have a link for video to share but Carlos Gomes walk off. Oh my...
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Yeah I have to back jericho here. Pham comes off as a total jerk in that article. You can't base your opinion of players off of news articles but if I had to I'd assume Pham is one of the bigger jerks in the league.

You guys are smarter than me because after 2 years of watching Pham I still don't know what/who he is. I do see that he has a big chip on his shoulder. He doesn't relax. Even on the bench his brows are knitted.

On the Pirates: after a blistering start Josh Harrison goes down and they revert to a .500 team and that's not surprising. That guy is special. We get 'em for 3 and I'm looking forward to getting a good look at them. 2 of 3 is reasonable and will keep us playing tag with you for the Central lead.

On the Cubs: Helluva offensive team still, but the pitching is suspect. I've only seen them for 1 game (2 snow outs didn't help) so far so I will be watching your game today with great interest. ;)

Kyle Lohse has reported to Triple-A Omaha.

Lohse signed a minor league contract with the Royals on March 31 and spent the last few weeks at their spring training complex in Arizona. The 39-year-old right-hander didn't pitch anywhere professionally in 2017, but we figure to see him in Kansas City at some point this summer given the Royals' poor overall pitching depth. He can earn up to $1.5 million if he reaches the majors.

DeGrom out with hyperextended elbow while swinging the bat. The madness has to stop, just really dumb that the AL and NL use different rulesets and that pitchers are still hitting in this day and time. I don't care how old school it is or how much strategy you want to say it adds to the game (it really isn't much), it is just really bad for baseball. Every other league on the planet has realized this at this point except the NL.

Or the other way to look at it is that pitchers need to figure out how to stop hurting themselves doing mundane baseball things like swinging a bat or running.

I know that eventually the NL will give, but I hope by that time I’m dead (and I mean that seriously). I’ve just about had enough of the bastardization of the game I love. The ship is sinking and most will be glad when it does. Doesn’t make it right, only popular. But enjoy (and I mean that seriously as well).

One of the things I loved about baseball was that everyone had to run, throw, hit, field, etc. I loved bad hitting pitchers and good hitting pitchers even more. And when a bad hitting pitcher did get a hit it was something special, expectations rose, the crowd got excited even more. But more than that, in a game that is trying to do whatever it can to genericize itself, pitchers hitting offered a bit of variation and diversity, the rules changed just that little bit to add nuance and color to the game.
