Was looking at the AL standings and its crazy how much the AL already looks like a foregone conclusion before the AS break:

- The Red Sox and Yankees have 14-16 games up on the 3rd place team. One will take the division and the other a WC.

- The Indians are 11.5 up on the 2nd place team -- they are winning the central.

- The Astros and Mariners will likely both be playoff teams. The A's are the only team within shouting distance and are STILL 10 games out of the division and probably don't have staying power.

Unlike the NL which should produce very exciting second half races, you can probably pencil in the Yankees, Red Sox, Indians, Astros and Mariners as the 5 AL playoff teams and the rest may as well sell.

Because baseball is weird, I would put money on one of those teams not making the playoffs. Every year there is a team that totally collapses in the second half.

Since the original post was made the Mariners are in free fall and only 1.5 games ahead of Oakland.

Sometimes we all get some things right:

A's are a big sleeper team imo. Offense should be potent. Not saying playoffs or WS necessarily, but I'd be comfortable betting their team over on wins and wouldn't shock me if they end up 2nd in that division or at least above .500

The Houston Astros have had five starting pitchers all season. Verlander, Cole, Morton, Keuchel and McCullers have started all 103 games this year. That's pretty amazing.

Back in 2011 the Brewers had only six guys start games all year. Gallardo, Greinke, Marcum, Narveson and Wolf started the majority of the games - Marco Estrada had seven starts when Greinke and the Narv Dog missed a few games during the course of the year.

Staying healthy is so critical - and when you avoid the injury bug, it really helps a team get through the slog of 162 games.

Weird:

Stats By STATS

@StatsBySTATS

John Axford (@BlueJays) is expected to make his 1st career start today.

He, Sergio Romo, and Jerry Blevins will have made their first career start this season after 530+ relief outings.

Prior to 2018, only 5 players ever had as many relief appearances before their first start.

http://awfulannouncing.com/mlb/braves-broadcaster-joe-simpson-blasts-unprofessional-dodgers-batting-practice-tshirts.html

The Dodgers took BP in shorts and tshirts in Atlanta. Braves announcer Joe Simpson was greatly offended.

"If I were a Dodger fan, I'd be embarrassed. And I don't know how Major League Baseball allows such attire when the gates are open and fans are watching."

He later yelled at some kids to get off his lawn.

I was just reading that. Him or Carey mentioned something about fans not knowing who was who because they weren't wearing anything with their names on their backs. They must hate the giants and other similar teams who don't put names on their backs at all.
Remember what Yoda said:

"Cubs lead to Cardinals. Cardinals lead to dislike. Dislike leads to hate. Hate leads to constipation."

And then posted on Brewerfan about how some reliever's hat wasn't completely square as it sat on his head.

Well played.

Trea Turner and Sean Newcomb both have now had offencive tweets from when they were teenagers dug up and resurfaced. Newcomb on the night he took a no-hitter into the ninth inning. This might sound conspiratorial, but someone or some organization of people who need a life is performing some kind of a tactical hit with the release of these tweets. I'm not in any way shape or form condoning what these guys are saying when they were teenagers, and this more than ever should bring some awareness to how we should be careful with how we choose to use our words especially on social media platforms... with that being said the timed release of these tweets it's just some shady business.

I don’t think the timing is any form of conspiracy. I doubt that the people who dig these up are sports fans, the timing coincides with them gaining public notice. Teenage boys are dumb, they say dumb things. Not excusing behavior, but in a vacuum...how do their agents not have a team of people scrubbing their social media history?

It's just another example of the sad state of today's culture...somebody is reading the ticker scrolling across the bottom of a sports cable station, grabbing names of mlb players having a big game or that do something newsworthy, and then digging through their social media history to see if they can find something that makes them look like a terrible person and shame them, context be damned.

To me those actions speak to just how empty some people's lives are - when the highlight of your weekend is finding an old tweet from someone you don't know at all that is insensitive and embarrassing before reposting it claiming this is in some way advancing civility, you really need better hobbies and are approaching life in a depressingly pessimistic way. I also don't get why these instances merit a short news story and extended attention on certain national sports sites. MLB trade deadline, nfl training camp, soccer, golf, lebRon a laker OMG!!!, so many other actual sports events that are newsworthy.

Maybe it's because I hate social media and don't partake in any of it, but it sure seems like "bringing the world closer together" using the world wide web has been a crime against humanity more often than a blessing.

It definitely is shady. I didn't see what Turner posted but Newcomb has to be thanking Hader for his coming out first because Newcombs was so much worse than Haders but he seems to be getting mostly a free pass because people are already tired of the story.

Sonny Gray against what's left of the Orioles.

2.2 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 3 K and a ton of boos as he left the mound.

Sonny Gray for Ryan Braun ... no money changes hands.

Would Braun veto a trade to a super team where he could DH?

Yankees wouldn't do it. They have Stanton, Judge, Gardner and Hicks for outfield/DH and they can just non-tender Gray after the season without taking on any bad money.
