Random news and notes for MLB 2018

By the end of the season (Barring injury), Trout will move into the top 100 all time for cumulative WAR, with probably around 65.0-ish WAR. He should pass guys like Andre Dawson and Dave Winfield, Billy Williams, and Willie McCovey. In his age 26 season.

This is nuts.

It's too bad MLB has no idea how to market their players. This guy is beyond a generational player. He is literally the Michael Jordan of baseball. There are still plenty of people who will tell you that Bryce Harper is the best player in baseball despite Trouts WAR being 34 higher with only 600 more AB's.

There's still a lot of people, and casual fans dismissive of the advanced stats. That's fair, I guess. It also doesn't help that he plays on a horrible team, that is ALSO decimated by injuries.

The Angels are, and always will be 2nd fiddle to the Dodgers in LA as well.

I really don't think too many people that will tell you Bryce Harper is the best player in baseball. I think you'll get Stanton, Judge, Kershaw, and maybe Altuve and Bryant as more popular answers. As for marketing Trout, he plays for a crappy franchise. I understand it. I wouldn't have expected a Mike Trout level player that played for the early 2000's Brewers to get any pub either.

The fact that he plays on the West Coast hurts him as well. Heck, I'd argue that Kershaw is hugely underappreciated too.

Who was the last "Huge Publicity" west coast MLB player? Bonds? Griffey, Jr?

Incredible how much Bruce Harper is struggling.

Also incredible how we almost had Mike Trout...by the completion of this season he will have pretty much sealed his HOF plaque...he is in his age 26 season. If he has a lengthy career until his late 30s he could go down as one of the greatest ever with just insane statistics.

I'm sure this horse has been beaten to death, but his BABIP is shockingly low...especially considering how much of the season has been played. It's currently at .207, while 3 of the last 4 years have been over 350. I'm not even sure how that happens over such a significant stretch. His k rate is a shade higher than normal while his bb rate is around where it normally is.

And even with his rotten luck, he still has over 800 ops with 19 hr...on pace for over 40.

Mike Trout is about a 98% lock to make the hall. One thing he absolutely has to do is keep the counting stats rolling. I don't see that being an issue though. Also, some playoff success would be nice...but that's primarily team dependent. I wouldn't be surprised if he left the Angels after his contract and signed with a team that doesn't have terrible management. I can't understand how a team with Mike Trout can't build a contender around him.

As much as the Cardinals and Molina are despised here in Brewer country, I will say I like what I saw last night when Ozuna was arguing with the Umpire on balls and strikes. Molina was up next and kind of put himself between Ozuna and the ump as if to say "Go back to the dugout" and then Matheny came out and did not argue with the ump but basically escorted Ozuna back to the dugout. At least it appeared that Molina and Matheny were willing to acknowledge that the Cardinal's horrible play on the field had a lot more to do with the score of the game than the umpire's strike zone.

This is not one of those "the Cards are morally superior to all other teams" statements. I love to see the Cards lose just as much as any other Brewer fan. I just like to see this kind of behavior on the field, regardless what team it is.

Agreed. In fairness to Ozuna, that strike call he argued was dreadful. It wasn't even close, probably one of the worst strike/ball calls I've seen all year.

As Foxtracks showed it, the first pitch to Molina was in the exact same spot and called a ball.

Since the Reds apparently forgot to read that article, I guess the Cubs will get to show the Dodgers again starting tomorrow - 4 game set against the Dodgers in LA.

Wonder what cute outfit theme Maddon came up with for that quiet flight from Cincy to LA late this afternoon...

So the Cubs have 4 bullpen pitchers on the DL right now and 1 starter. But please cubs fans, remind me how having depth options is pointless. All that matters is having the best 25 man roster on paper to start the season. That strategy is what leads to 4 game sweeps by last place teams because half your bullpen is AAAA caliber. I know some of them have good ERA's, but those are not supported by peripheral stats and won't last long(also partially a product of elite defense)

I was very critical of CC trying to be overly efficient with the bullpen over the weekend, especially yesterday. That said, one thing CC tries to do is give his bullpen arms offdays and ample rest. Once in a while, we blow a game. That's a better result than having a guy pitch a 3rd consecutive day and wind up on the 10 day DL as happened to the Cubs over the weekend. I wouldn't be surprised if their fans were saying "if we weren't so unlucky with injuries", except that even with the injuries they've had...they have been lucky with injuries. They could be the Dodgers and have 2-3 starters consistently injured including their Ace, or the Nationals and have half their lineup miss half the season(Eaton, Murphy, Rendon, Zimmerman).

Bottom line, I'm happy we have the depth we do...it helps being able to rotate arms out and have capable options to fill in at most positions in the event of injury...which we've had plenty. Hopefully we can make some deadline additions and make a more serious run at playoffs this year.

Thrilled at this point to not have signed Darvish this past offseason - sounds like while his statline was good in a recent rehab start, he experienced more tricep/arm discomfort than anyone is comfortable with and he's about to be re-evaluated. Would be very surprised if he makes a meaningful start for them before the All Star Break, and it might be extended DL time for Yu.

Cubs are in the midst of wrapping up a dreadful road trip today and have been in dire need of a day off for more than a week - which still won't happen for them until next week Monday. Pitching depth was always the weak spot on their 40 man roster, and this is the time of year when that problem starts showing up - especially in the pen when guys a team leans on to get key outs wear down or get injured. Also, Bryant is on the DL - they are not a team that appears to be on the verge of winning 25 of their next 35 anytime soon...

Tampa's whacky pitching is making for some interesting stats. Sergio Romo has 5 starts this year and 8 saves. Very likely he ends up with 10+ of each. There's probably some sort of weird stat in there the media will make a big deal about and shove down our throats come September.

Michael Reed getting the call up to the Braves. He's put together a very impressive season between AA and AAA in the Braves' system so far this year. Still walking a ton but also actually getting hits with a little power as well.

Good for him.

Saw his BABIP is over .500 this year. That's incredible.
