2018 MLB Pipeline Top 30 Prospects

Perez's versatility is obviously his greatest strength. Problem is, as the roster stands today that versatility isn't needed anywhere near as much as last year. For starters, there should be no reason with him ever to play the OF. There's already 4 FT starters there with 3 spots. Already have two 2B, and either one of them can play SS/3B here and there. (Which is all that would be needed for those positions.)

No, there's still emergencies where someone is hurt for a longer period of time, but I'm not sure you make a roster decision based on that. I do still expect they'll keep him, I just don't want to see them invent too many starts for him- especially if it means taking Yelich, Cain, Santana, Shaw out of the line-up to do it.

Which of the guys in the bottom third of the top 30 prospects do you folks think will break out into top 10 status?

I think Troy Stokes is the big one. He erupted with more power, and I think the plate discipline will improve the hit tool. He'll be the Great Value Christian Yelich.

On the pitching side, I think Zach Brown could rocket very high. From the MLB report, it seems he has four pitches - a two-seam fastball, a four-seam fastball, a curve, and a change.

Well, he's right on the bottom third border but I'd say Kodi Medeiros. I'd say Jacob Nottingham, maybe.

I just don't see it with Stokes. I see a future MLB outfielder, possibly, but more somewhere between a Quintin Berry speed specialist type or a 4th OFer at best.

Stokes is muscular and stocky, and doesn't have near the speed that Berry brings.

His body type is pretty rare in MLB. I guess Caleb Gindl would be a solid comparison, although Stokes probably profiles better. Young Kirby Puckett without near the hit tool?

Gindl is actually a pretty decent comp, though Stokes' arm is below average even in LF. Due to his arm, Stokes is a little difficult to place in the OF picture. I think he should be getting more reps in CF, but I've been saying that for a few years now.

That said, he does a lot of things well, if nothing he does is outstanding. He's really good at putting the ball in the air and can put a punch in it on the pull side. He's not super fast, but he's a good baserunner. He'll take walks.

He's been one of my favorite players in the system for awhile, and I am intrigued to see if he can keep making enough contact to make hit hitting profile work. So far, so good with a career wRC+ of 119.

Nottingham will be a big mover on that list considering how low he is. He showed some real positive signs in 2017 already, and with even average batted-ball luck his numbers will improve. He was an above-average hitter in AA, as a catcher who's still young for the level, and improved on the defensive side as well. People look too much at the low BA, most everything else was fine.

Well Supak has to be the favorite followed by Stokes as they will be more advanced. Gatewood is 19th and his growth last season I think he'll carry further in to this year and that takes him way higher in regard especially as hes seeing AA games maybe even AAA by the end of season. I think the others are too far away and need a monster year to climb to a top 10 I guess Zach Brown could climb but the rest haven't played enough to think they'll play enough with stats to climb in to top 10....Of course you can trade for Archer and lose 4 or 5 guys making it easier ;)

He's shown the ability to improve... and I wouldn't be surprised if he could improve the hit tool some. He's also been young for his leagues, about a -1.6 compared to the league's average age. I'm less worried about that.

On the flip side, he could become a 3TO+speed player.

This franchise has needed another bat like Brauns drafted for a bit now. Should be fun to watch this kid evolve.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
