Anyone know why they are playing them this year?

Do you mean why they aren't playing them? I'd assume it's because UW is in Florida this spring.

I think it's probably to just give the kids something different/they take whatever early season type tournament that will take them.

 

Of course it really didn't make sense for them to do it the last two years and I think they finally realized that.

 

Last year they started the season in the Houston area, flew to Phoenix for the sole purpose of playing an exhibition game against the Brewers and then had to be in Central Florida for a game less than two days later.

 

The year before they were in Lubbock for a series against Texas Tech, flew to Central Florida for an Invitational, flew to Phoenix for one game against the Brewers and then had to be in Eastern Arkansas two days later for a series against Arkansas State.

 

That costs a lot of money and isn't worth the cost. It really only makes sense if they're in Arizona for a Classic/Invitational/Tournament/Series or maybe if they're in Southern California or Vegas or something and can make a quick, cheap flight to Phoenix.
