Zink's likely gone

In Monday's State Journal there was a story on Brewers 47th round pick Ryan Zink. I sounds like he's going to end up in college at Illinios-Chicago. In the article it says that he knew that he was projected to get drafted between rounds 6-10, but he wanted 4th round money and that's why he fell to the 47th. He is quoted in the article as saying that he's pretty sure that he's going to end up at college. He says that he's hoping to make a final decision by next week. He also says that he has yet to talk with the Brewers.

It kind stinks that he wanted the big $. I always love to have local guys make it big with our hometown clubs, oh well.

Here's the link Zink story

Maybe next year when he jumps up in the draft or as a DFE guy if he struggles in college?

While UIC does qualify as a community college in quality, it is considered a full-time University. As such, he would not be a DFE candidate next year if he attended UIC.

Just looking for clarification on this. As I understand it, if a HS draftee goes to a 4-year D1 university he is then not eligible for the draft until after his Junior year. If he goes to any other type of secondary school he could be elgible next year for the draft again. I assume that a draftee is no longer a DFE candidate if he attends a 4-year D1 university. Am I correct on these?

I don't think there's a Division limitation. I think if a player chooses a D2 or D3 program he is also not DFE and draft eligible (until Junior year). Some players are draft eligible in their Sophomore years, but I don't know the exceptions to make them eligible.

Both Zink & Maday were courtesy drafts. Nice to see the Brewers give some local guys some love, even if it seems as though both are headed to college.

Sophomores that turn 21 within 45 days of the draft are eligible.

Hey Patrick! You were courtesy picks because of the demands for money and most of all the committment to college. I am not sure where Zink is heading, but Maday is going to Arkansas. Maday had a strong committment to them regardless. He is taking the same route that Scott Roehl took. Hopefully it works out for him and in a couple years when he develops a little more we could have a shot at him. Unfortunately this year we missed out on Roehl since he was picked up by the Indians.

Gotta say that I love all these quick signings. Melvin and Jack Z and the scouts are doing what they got to do to get them deals done. Now lets get our big two done!!

Well, I can name one guy I'd rather see signed more quickly, if it's all the same with the Brewers.

I echo the sentiments of surprise in seeing Hawk signed so quickly. I thought he might turn into the Wilhelmsen of this draft, talented high school kid who got taken lower than expected taking awhile to sign before being bowled over with an offer. And who knows, no one expected Moss to sign last year, so here's to hoping that there's a little extra in a billfold for the Brewers to go after Meier, Maday, and/or Zink, too.

Thanks for the clarification on the DFE rules guys, I was unaware of that as I've only become interested in the draft beyond round 1 or 2 (where picks aren't likely to be DFE guys)in the last year, reading threads in this forum has helped a lot. So many rules, so little time to commit them all to memory.

If Zink is looking for 4th round $$ and is planning on attending a small time baseball school like UIC, he should reconsider. A better option for him would be to attend a JC. The Crew has proven time and again they pay DFE players who produce. It might be something he would consider since he was drafted by the in-state team.

There aren't too many (if any) strong JC teams up north to impress upon Zink to attend, especially considering that he is looking for a solid education such as the one he undoubtedly will receive at UIC. Losing Northern players to 4-year programs is always an issue, as it takes a lot to sign these kids away from college. Heck, we almost lost Brad Nelson to Nebraska 2 years ago. While Zink may be passing on the opportunity to play pro baseball, it's hard to argue with his determination to attend a strong academic institution while also continuing his baseball career.
