Junior Guerra Split Contract

Greenleaf1

I thought someone might bring this up when it happened but I haven't seen anything about it, and haven't had much luck Googling this either.

Does this mean that we are essentially gaining an "option" to send Guerra the minor leagues? Is that something that a player can agree to pre-arbitration when they have no options left? I've never heard of a contract like this for a pre-arb player (I know Nieuwenhuis signed a split deal last year though, but it only guaranteed about $250K in the minors), but obviously Guerra doesn't really fit the mold of a pre-arb player. Could this essentially mean that we are guaranteeing him his (essentially) MLB-minimum salary even in AAA and in return we are essentially gaining back an option year on him?

If that's the case, I'm amazed people aren't talking about this more. It gives us some really intriguing flexibility (and basically means unless Guerra is lights out in March that he'll end up at CS to start the year) and means Guerra won't have to put up or shut up in Spring Training necessarily. I could see him liking this deal for the extra money and also maybe the Brewers showed him some form of commitment that they will give him his shot this year, but maybe not commit to him being on the opening day roster? On the other hand, I would think there's some rebuilding team that would be willing to give him a shot in April regardless, but maybe he's comfortable with Milwaukee?

Or maybe this isn't what his contract means at all, but does anyone have any more info?

They still have to expose him to waivers if he doesn't make the team. The split contract give him incentives to stay w/the Brewers as opposed to signing a minor-league deal elsewhere.

CS is obviously a bad place for pitchers to go, and the Brewers might need to give extra incentives for pitchers to go there.

It is nowhere near an extra option since a player with an option can't be claimed and Guerra can. Does signal that the Brewers would like him to stay in the organization if he doesn't make the big league team. Would certainly like him as starting depth in the minors if he doesn't make the team.

technically, not true. a player who remains on a club's 40-man roster and who has a minor league option cannot be claimed if sent to the minor leagues.

but, if a club wishes to try to outright a player off the 40-man roster and to the minor leagues (regardless of his number of remaining options), another team can claim him and put him on their own 40-man roster (and then either option him, or place him on the active 25-man roster).

it's usually easier for clubs to claim a player with at least one minor league option remaining, because they have flexibility in stashing him on the reserve (optioned) list, or on the 25-man roster.

granted, the season is still young, but it should be noted that if guerra spends the rest of the season on the 25-man roster or the major league disabled list, he will not burn his final option.

this is incorrect. when a player is granted a fourth option, it is good only for that season, regardless of how it is used.

thus, junior guerra enters 2019 spring training with no minor league options remaining.

Fortunately, Guerra seems like a surefire bet to make the bullpen at this point.
