Braun to Red Sox (idea, not rumor)

alwz4gbp

Yes, I realize that this may be a bit far fetched, and yes I know about the no trade clause but hear me out. Due to the log jam in the OF and the teams desire/need to jettison someone, why not Braun? He getting up in years, injuries are becoming expected, etc, so what about seeing if he'd accept a trade to Boston. I don't study the minors but certainly there is a match somewhere in their system. Now before the "you're an idiot" police come out to play, why wouldn't the Sox be interested? They are trying to back a truck load of money up for Martinez to essentially be their DH, only to be rebuffed cuz one truckload isn't enough, why not take Braun for half the money and half the commitment time? I have to believe that Braun would at least think about it. Perennial contender vs the unproven Brewers? DH vs the wear and tear of playing the field? An outfield or Cain, Yelich and Santana with Phillips rotating in all 3 spots and Broxton on the bench sounds pretty appealing to me.

As I said, I'm not familiar with what Boston has to offer but Dombrowski is known for not being afraid to pull the trigger on a trade. OK, go crazy!!!

Braun is still due like $20 million this year and Martinez isn't going to get much more than that. They wouldn't get rid of prospects of young controllable talent over saving a couple million dollars on Braun instead of Martinez. Plus they just signed Nunez so I think that pretty much puts a big $ bat out of the picture.

I would argue that the savings would be substantial. Whats Braun owed? 57 Mill? The numbers I've seen tossed around are anywhere from 100-125 and Martinez was getting "fed up with the Red Sox". I'd say giving up a few prospects, saving 60-70 million and not having to put up with what sounds like a huge pain in the ass would be money well spent. Think Attanasio would agree to send a few prospects to the Red Sox for 70 million dollars? He'd do it in a heartbeat.

1) Braun has no surplus value. In this market he may have negative value because he wouldn't get 3/57 today. So if you want to get something back you'd have to kick in a good percentage of his remaining salary.

2) I know you already mentioned it, but the NTC. I can't see Braun giving up his 10/5 to go even further from home and away from where he's spent his entire career. I guess never say never but it's hard to make much of a case for the Red Sox being an interest for Braun.

Santana probably makes a lot more sense for both sides if they end up looking for a trade alternative to Martinez.

Giving that much money to Martinez is crazy. There are much better values out there but Dombrowski seems to become enamored with names regardless of the cost. I just think that given the Brewers logjam, that jettisoning an aging redundant player is the way to go. I don't think he has negative value. I still think he holds value as a hitter but limited to negative in the field, but value just the same with escalating salaries. Ideally, he'll pick up 1st base rapidly and thrive there. Not holding my breath for that.

I still believe that if Boston is set on dumping that much money on Martinez, Braun holds value for half the time and for less than half of the money.

That's the thing, salaries aren't escalating. Not right now. They're de-escalating, and even Dombrowski wouldn't be dumb enough to give Braun 3/57. The offer has now been reported from the Red Sox to Martinez as 5/100, not 5/125. So on a per year basis, with Braun being 3 years older, you're essentially placing equal present value on them, which they do not have.

There are just numerous reasons why this won't happen. Like I said if you had suggested Santana as the fallback for the Red Sox on Martinez I could follow the logic there a lot better.

90% chance Braun finishes his contract here in Milwaukee, and on the 1/10 that he doesn't, it won't be in Boston.

I think we should get used to Braun being with the Brewers for a long time.

Best case scenario for those that want to trade him would be for him to start the season out like the Braun of old.

So root for the guy. Root for trade value.
