What if we don't add a starter?

Aguilar is not getting Pazos. There is a glut of 1Bs available, and Aguilar is a guy who only plays 1B, needs a platoon partner (for the big half, no less), isn't great defensively, and is out of options. And everyone knows he has no spot in Milwaukee if Braun works out at 1B.

This has "cash considerations" written all over it.

The only way Braun plays 3b is if it's a crazy long extra innings game, we run out of players and then Shaw gets hurt. There's simply zero chance the Brewers purposely play him there. None.

Right, I'd think 2b would move to SS and SS would move to 3b and at worst you have Braun at 2b. Anyway, the Brewers did add a stater in Chacin. He should fit well as the team's #4 throughout the season. Woodruff jumps in to the 3 spot. Suter can handle #5 during the short term. The bullpen is deeper than last season's. We'll be fine to start the season. There is the 10day DL now so you have that to send an arm to and call up another when it is needed. We may sign a guy yet as 3 of the big 4 are still out there. At an average of 500k missed per start, you would think one of them folds their stance.(I'd hope to firing that Agent)

From Jeff Sullivan's latest FG chat. Take it for what it's worth, but it goes with what I've been thinking for a while, that there isn't a plan to strengthen the rotation at any cost, but only if the right opportunity is there. And that they are reasonably happy with what they have.

vince clortho: Milwaukee’s breaking my heart. As the only team outside the big 7 who decided they would deploy resources to field a competitive ballclub, I hoped they would be excellent baseballers. However, the only thing they seem to be brewing… are half measures. Find them a pitcher for me.

Jeff Sullivan: Firstly, as crazy as it sounds, the “offseason” isn’t over yet. Still moves to be made

Jeff Sullivan: Secondly, I think of the Brewers’ pitching staff as a big experiment. I think, organizationally, they’re around the forefront of trying to improve the pitchers they already have. I don’t know if it’s going to work, but I think the Brewers are banking big on development

Jeff Sullivan: I don’t doubt that the Brewers would take Arrieta, Cobb, or Lynn if the prices fell. The prices haven’t fallen-

I haven’t seen this mentioned. Looking at our starting staff over the next 2-5 years, how does it look and how realistic is it to think Hader could be a TOR and Burnes slotted in there.

Hader

Nelson

Anderson

Burnes

5th guy

If we think we can get to this it would put the Brew in a great position to do a Davies, Woodruff and Phillips type of a deal.

I think everybody wants to win the WS in 2018 because of Cain and Yelich, I’m ok winning it in 19, 20 or 21 :)

I think there is very little chance Hader ever becomes a starter. He could, but I doubt it.

This was interesting on a couple of levels. The chat seems to indicate that the Brewers know there is pitching available to improve the team but are unwilling to meet the price for it. Good on Stearns for holding strong.

Second, is the second of the three comments suggesting the Brewers are taking a new/novel approach to developing pitching? Are they using different metrics or methodologies that put them on the "forefront" of internal pitching development? What are they seeing that portends "big" development?

So apparantely DJ has fixed something in Miley? I read that in the Major League forum.

Id be good with this rotation until Jimmy is back...

Anderson

Davies

Chacin

Woodruff (If he's as good as he was in 1st handful of starts)

Miley (If DJ really fixed something)

This is loosely related to starters, but I can't understand why people leave Drake off every single time they make a roster. I don't think I've ever seen him on anyone's list since joining this forum after the season, but he has a career 3.60 FIP and 10K/9, and he's dominant against lefties. In this era of relief specialists, it would be nice to have another LOOGY so you can regularly use Hader and Suter in longer situations. He's frankly been better than Jeffress for his career, though admittedly under more favorable usage situations. But the way Jeffress bombed last year, I can't see why it's considered a foregone conclusion that he's ahead of Drake. I suspect it's because Drake had a few really bad outings in memorable situations, but it's dangerous to use narrative data over more comprehensive stats when projecting a pitcher's performance.

I think Suter is involved in the rotation on some level almost no matter what, even if just because of injuries and in piggy-back situations. I think that puts Drake ahead of Jeffress in the bullpen. We shall see though.

Calling Drake 'dominant' against lefties is really generous. Josh Hader is dominant against lefties. Drake is competent.

He's not good enough to justify a roster spot given how completely unusable he is against righties.

I would rather we keep Bethancourt, the catcher, as a relief pitcher than Drake. Hell, call up and Indy league team and ask them for a pitcher and I’ll take that over Drake.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
