Yankees acquire Russell Wilson

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/22357092/new-york-yankees-acquire-russell-wilson-trade-texas-rangers

We are a week and a half out form spring training, there are more than 40 big name free agents still on the market, and this is the news of the day. :(

Except for one terrific day in late January, this offseason has been a major bummer.

But at least NY has solved its QB issues.

I wonder if the Brewers would ever consider something like this because of the Wisconsin connection. It might be fun for the fans down in Arizona to have Wilson around for a bit.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I wonder if something is up. Football is a dying sport and I were him I'd much rather play baseball if that were a realistic option.

It wouldn't seem like the Yankees would need a publicity stunt.

There isn't anything up besides it being one of Wilson's dreams to play for the Yankees. Other than giving Yankee fans a little extra juice in late February, and giving beat writers a throw-away story, this is a complete nothingburger.

Wilson was the one who pushed for this and it is because he wanted to be a Yankee his entire life. This really isn’t much of a PR stunt pushed by the Yankees.

Yes and no. This is the basically same as having Billy Crystal participate in Spring Training except they actually had to trade for Wilson.

I realize this is entirely a PR stunt, but I'm curious - what are the actual roster implications and logistics behind this?

I assume if Russell Wilson today announced he is quitting football to play baseball, he is now owned by the Yankees? Is he actually taking up a roster spot on a Yankee minor league affiliate? Or is he on some kind of PUP list? Or do they just have the rights to sign him if he decides to play baseball, much like a draft pick deciding between college and pro ball?

He was assigned to a minor league team, Trenton I think. At this point of the year it means nothing.
