Haudricourt

Jkromb
The Brewers have the capacity to add to their payroll even after acquiring Christian Yelich and signing Lorenzo Cain, Jhoylus Chacin, Boone Logan and Matt Albers this offseason, writes Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “Mark wants to do what’s in the best interests of the organization,” GM David Stearns tells Haudricourt. “He has made that very clear throughout my time here and even before I got here. He’s going to be supportive of the baseball process. He’s going to be supportive of investing when it’s warranted.” That said, Haudricourt notes that a top-of-the-market offer for a free agent like Yu Darvish still doesn’t seem likely, per Haudricourt, and the Brewers do want to leave some room for in-season moves, should the need arise.

Should we believe what Tom says?

Is there reason not to?

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

Yea, what HighHeat has been saying that we're dead set of adding top notch FA SP.

I think the information HH19 gets is better than what Stearns tells Haudricourt...knowing full well that anything Stearns says will be broadcast for everyone in the world to see. Most here would agree, it's pretty clear he has some sort of inside source with the Brewers.

per TomH:

The #Brewers definitely considering making outside personnel move. Otherwise, they probably would have firmed up their own roster by now. They have until Thursday morning but we could hear something Wednesday.

Wonder if it’s speculation or he’s heard something.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Wording says speculation. But obviously they haven’t decided on many players yet so something has to drop.

I don’t think he would use the words “definitely considering” if it was just pure speculation. He also reported just yesterday that the Stearns said no "serious" trade discussions were going on and Haudricourt speculated that any outside move would have to come via waiver claim or signing of a released player. The outside personnel move could certainly be a waiver claim or released player signing and not necessarily a trade.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

It's not typical of most teams' newspaper beat writers to simply blab any trade/transaction rumors they hear -- at least not in MIL or here in MN, maybe even in the Midwest altogether. If/when a reporter has a scoop, it's possible they may have been asked to keep it quiet or the information may have been shared in an "off the record" conversation. Betraying that confidentiality would seem, at minimum, to jeopardize future scoops and, at worst, make a reporter's working relationship with the team's FO folks extremely difficult, which in turn stands to make it that much more difficult for the beat writer to effectively do their job. In other words, the short term gain may well be grossly outweighed by the long-term consequences.

Tom H. calls 'em as he sees 'em, whether based on inside info or not, and he tends to be right a lot more often than he is wrong. He also seems very inclined to report responsibly rather than "pollyanna"-ing every rumor that makes the rounds. If something's gaining enough steam, he's not afraid to allude to it. That sort of slow-moving approach doesn't make us rumor-mongers too happy, but it does make a strong statement about his professional integrity, which in the end is far more worthy of respect.

Putting the "definitely considering" tweet together with yesterday's "no 'serious' trade discussions going on" quote of Stearns makes it sound like a significant trade is quite unlikely and if any outside move happens, it's very possible that it'd be underwhelming.
