Haudricourt

So I just read a tweet from Tom that said the Brewers are planning to go to camp with the group they currently have. I don’t agree with this and I tend to believe that this is poor.. if we didn’t plan on adding pitching, why trade for YelIch and why sign Cain?

2 weeks until pitchers and catchers report, than about 6-7 more weeks until opening day...plus haudricourt is about as worthless as it gets when it comes to breaking any brewer news accurately.

Brewers have tons of time to make a deal and may even benefit to hold awhile before pulling the trigger on a few trades. Plus, still lots of fa moves will have to happen here soon. Patience, that tweet is a nothingburger.

Could just be posturing on the Brewer's end to give the impression to other GMs and free agents that they are happy with where they are at and will not extend themselves either financially or with prospects in any deals over the next couple of months.

But maybe Attanasio reviewed the finances again and decided he didn't want to spend any more money.

Or maybe Stearns looked at the minor league system and realized he only has a couple more worthy trade chips and didn't want to part with those.

Or maybe they did have another deal worked out that would have freed up some more money (Braun, as crazy as it may seem) and that deal fell through.

Personally I didn't like making the initial big splash moves on outfielders when the outfield wasn't a major problem other than OBP out of centerfield. Would have been perfectly content to just sign Cain OR trade for Yelich and play him in centerfield knowing that I'd only see average defense out of him at that position.

Still think the Brewers will over-extend themselves (spend too much money and put themselves in an arbitration bind a couple years from now, or completely wipe out the top end of the minor league system) and acquire a pitcher.

You left out this tweet:

"Having said that, it also doesn't hurt to play coy and let the market come to #Brewers, especially this winter when no other team is doing much. That way, better chance of "right opportunity" coming along. So, stay tuned."

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Alright, but if Stearns made the comment he said he did, that worries me.,

It shouldn’t. How many times doesn’t it need to be said how worthless GM comments can and usually are. Here is another quotes in Haudricourt’s full article that speaks how much of a non story and non meaningful comment it was:

"If the right opportunity presents itself, we are open to acting," Stearns said. "But we have a high level of confidence in our current group, so it needs to be the right opportunity."

At the current prices we are going into spring training with this group essentially. Maybe the prices come down, maybe they don’t. Stearns said nothing meaningful.

I would RATHER Stearns respond in the way he did.

Why???

It's debatable whether or not other GM's and agents see through the press talk, but there's no benefit for him to outwardly admit that he's stuck in a desperate situation where he needs to cave into a free agent's or other team's demands in order to obtain a player. He's got to at least leave a little benefit of the doubt in people's minds that "he may actually just go into the season as is if we don't cooperate."

Here is the quote:

David Stearns said, "We continue to have discussions on a variety of fronts, but at this point I anticipate going (to spring training) with our current group."

It doesn't mean he doesn't want to make a move. It means nothing is happening in baseball right now.

See below.
You never give up leverage.

Saying " yes we definitely need to add another pitcher or 2 via free agency or trade" would be beyond stupid.......

Relax

Exactly. What good does it do for Stearns not to appear satisfied at the moment? All it would do is raise prices and agents/owners would smell desperation. This was the only move.

At this point, you cannot look desperate to make a deal.

If I was Stearns, I'd be making that kind of noise all along.

I'd have Braun taking grounders at first, second, third. He's in left, he's in right.

I'm working various outfield combos. And I listen to all sorts of offers - for Thames, Shaw, Aguilar, in addition to Santana.

Stearns statement doesn't cause me any alarm. To me he's basically saying overall he likes his roster and there's still no urgency on their part. Lots of deals get done in spring training which starts in 10 days. Half the GM's including Cleveland's will be in Arizona too. Over the next 10 days a lot of teams will be loading up on the remaining lower level FA and there's plenty of them still out there. Basically he's saying Brewers are fine with the roster makeup in general and won't be active leading up to spring training adding bodies. He left the door open for a deal for a premier pitching FA, but isn't holding his breath it will get done.

When dust settles and teams see what they have in spring training, I suspect the trade market will be active.

The Brewers have the capacity to add to their payroll even after acquiring Christian Yelich and signing Lorenzo Cain, Jhoylus Chacin, Boone Logan and Matt Albers this offseason, writes Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “Mark wants to do what’s in the best interests of the organization,” GM David Stearns tells Haudricourt. “He has made that very clear throughout my time here and even before I got here. He’s going to be supportive of the baseball process. He’s going to be supportive of investing when it’s warranted.” That said, Haudricourt notes that a top-of-the-market offer for a free agent like Yu Darvish still doesn’t seem likely, per Haudricourt, and the Brewers do want to leave some room for in-season moves, should the need arise.

Should we believe what Tom says?

It depends what constitutes a "top of the market offer". I think Stearns has a number in his head on where he'd go for these guys, and while there may be a wiggle room there, he's not going to blow that out of the water. If the market comes to them, the Brewers will sign one of those guys.
