2018 Green Bay Packers Training Camp: Rodgers Extension Reportedly Done

pacopete4
Rodgers on losing Van Pelt: "My quarterback coach didn't get retained. I thought that was an interesting change -- really without consulting me. There's a close connection between quarterback and quarterback coach. And that was an interesting decision."

The interview on Golic & Wingo made it sound like he was not all too happy. I know there will be a crowd that just says he has no business in coaching decisions but it still could create a rift between Rodgers and management.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Smaller version of the Favre saga when both sides were right, both were wrong. I think they should have talked to Rodgers about it, just out of courtesy to your HOF QB. But I don't like that Rodgers went public with his frustration.

It could create a rift, and if they cut Nelson or Cobb or someone Rodgers really wants around, that could add to it. Plus, I really wonder what the relationship is between Rodgers and MM to begin with.

Comments like that reinforces my thought that he may just play out his contract and move elsewhere. Just like Favre.

Favre didn’t do that at all...

The Packers can hold Rodgers under team control until 2021 if they really want to.

Age: Year: Salary

34 - 2018 - $19.8M

35 - 2019 - $20M

36 - 2020 - Franchise Tag

37 - 2021 - Franchise Tag

So it's not like Rodgers has a ton of leverage if he really were to want out of Green Bay.

It must be pretty dang good because IMO there is no chance McCarthy doesn't get canned otherwise when everybody else goes.

It's the QB coach's responsibility to develop the QBs and have them ready to play. Hundley's performance is on Van Pelt as much if not more than McCarthy, and that's probably why Van Pelt was let go.

Right. I get that but it is probably more on McCarthy and Thompson for picking such a crappy quarterback, to begin with. I mean, Rodgers hasn't had his play dip while under the tutelage of Van Pelt so you can't have it both ways.

I know, that was a soap opera too long to talk about. Pushed out, Retired, Traded, he left!

34 - 2020 - $19.8M

35 - 2021 - $20M

37 - 2023 - Franchise Tag

So it's not like Rodgers has a ton of leverage if he really were to want out of Green Bay.

Brew, where are you getting those numbers? Everywhere I have looked has him under contract this year and next, but a UFA in 2020? Little help, would like to see that.

I have no idea what I was doing. The years should be 2018, 19, 20, 21.

Van Pelt wasn't let go, he let his contract run out... I've heard that he was unhappy that the Packers wouldn't let him interview for promotions with other teams, one being an OC position with the Rams in 2015. There is this tidbit in this article:

https://www.wtmj.com/sports/green-bay-packers/exclusive-packers-coach-mike-mccarthy-talks-with-wtmj-after-thompson-capers-moves

Alex Van Pelt was more a personal choice from a contractual standpoint. He desired to be a free agent after this season, so this is really a product of last year's negotiation. He wants to look at other opportunities," McCarthy told WTMJ's "Wisconsin's Morning News" Thursday

Ironically... if there has EVER been a player in NFL history willing to pay the price of a franchise tag (two first round picks?) it might be for Aaron Rodgers... so I'm not so sure even the Franchise tag would keep him here if he really wanted to go...

But the Packers would get a chance to match any offer he would receive. So he still doesn’t really control anything.

McCarthy has historically been unwilling to let coaches who are under contract interview with other teams. Van Pelt wanted to pursue OC opportunities. I say let them pursue promotions, and if they are under contract then ask for draft pick compensation for hiring them.

I love Aaron Rodgers but I might entertain the idea of taking the first round picks. He's the ultimate sell high right now, approaching 35 and at some point his body is going to start wearing down from all the hits and injuries he's taken over the years from bad OL play.

Fortify the defense with his salary and trade up for one of the QBs. Yes, it's never happening, and I will enjoy Rodgers in GB until the day he retires....but it's a logical option IMO.

If he grades out well he would be an upgrade.

Problem is he is no longer durable, missed six games over the last two years with the Bears and didn't start a seventh.

If they trade Rodgers, it better make the Cowboys' return for Herschel Walker look light, and he's worth it.

Yes, we've had two HOF QBs back to back, but players like him are rare. You let him play as long as possible and enjoy every minute. See Tom Brady. 40+ and winning SBs

Yea, I agree it's a logical option to move on. That would be a massive amount of cap space to spend elsewhere, plus have the draft picks. However, not an option I would take. A QB in the NFL is about as important as any position in any sport. You have the best, you roll with it as long as you can.
