Yelich to the Brewers in exchange for Brinson, Isan Diaz, M. Harrison and Yamamoto

MVP2110
I don’t get how only two teams made serious offerers. It just does not make very much sense. I mean...two? The Marlins absolutely blew that trade. Did the GM give every team 60 seconds to call and he only had time to field two offers? What a fail.

Incredible to get a guy who did not get a single vote last year to garnering 29/30 first place votes this year. I’m not sure how the rest of Yelichs time will go here, but considering the fact he was on the rise, proven stud, and controllable at a cheap cost this may end up the biggest trade robbery in MLB history.

There were a couple hot takes that Yelich's best baseball had already been played. Guessing that had something to do with it..

It's pretty funny looking back at the replies throughout the season now haha. Obviously nobody could've expected anywhere near the second half he had, so not ripping anyone it's just funny to look back with hindsight in my favor! When we made the trade I told people I thought he could finish somewhere in the top 10 in MVP with 25ish homers... Still, never would've imagined a year like this...

People get attached to prospects. It's part of being a fan of and MLB team. There were several posts saying that the Brewers gave up too much, alluding to the idea that Yelich wasn't a difference-making player.

That is going to happen this winter, too, when the Brewers inevitably make another big trade acquisition. The fact is, this team has a prime 2-3 year window that can possibly be stretched to 4 with some solid soft-rebuild moves. They need to identify which prospects are part of that window, and which are currency to acquire outside talent which will be.

It is crazy how "disappointing" he was in the first half and he then ended up as the runaway MVP favorite by the end of the season. His second half was just unreal. For the first three months he was really no better than he was in Miami. Which was not really the expectation going from Marlins Park to Miller Park.

Should be interesting to see how next year goes. Is he actually anywhere close to what he did in the second half? Hard to know what he really is when one half of the season was just goof offensively and the second half was off the charts Barry Bonds.

Yelich did have that injury and missed 2-3 weeks early in the season. Maybe he was a bit slow coming back. I'm going to cop out and say he will probably fall somewhere between his first half and second half. I'm expecting a 900 OPS guy...300/375/525 type hitter with 30 dingers next year.

Funny how irritated I was with this trade at the time, thinking we gave up way too much. Knowing what I know now, I would have given up twice as much.

Much will depend on whether he bats behind or in front of Hiura - and that could be as soon as Opening Day. IF it is a Cain-Hiura-Yelich top three in the order, it may be along the lines of .315/.390/.550 (a .940 OPS) with 35 homers a year. A regular contender for the triple crown.

If it's Cain-Yelich-Hiura... I think 2018 could be a floor for Yelich in his prime.

...and now the MVP. Amazing.

Me imagining Yelich as a Cardinal:

LMAO at the Cardinals and Braves fans deciding that the reason their teams didn't make a good, strong offer for Yelich was obviously because the Marlins had asked them for far more than the Brewers offered (and they were obviously too insulted to make a counteroffer)... If it hadn't been for those greedy Marlins, we'd have had him instead of the Brewers... Because god forbid anyone should have a smarter GM than theirs... :laughing

Holy cow, the frozen hot takes on pages 2 and 3. :laughing

Not calling anyone out specifically, we've all been there.

Haha I am okay with my hot take ;)

That being said, yah, look at our yearly prediction thread. Everyone is stupidly wrong on something. Solid reason why I avoid absolute hate or love hot takes though for the most part.

I don't think anyone foresaw this kind of season from Yelich even those that liked the trade.

Yelich 2013-17: 290/369/432 for a 122 wRC+

Pre-ASB 2018: 292/364/459 for a 122 wRC+

Post-ASB 2018: 367/449/790 for a 220 wRC+

One half of good old fashioned Christian Yelich plus another half of steroid Bonds added up to a final line of 326/402/598, good for a 166 wRC+.

Given the Jekyll/Hyde nature of his 2018 season combined with a previous career high wRC+ of 134 then a dash of he's still only just 27 & I'd probably project him around a 140ish wRC+ for next year.

Regression candidate.

This 100%. It will be interesting to see how Yelich will be perceived next year when he's OPS'ing .825-.850 instead of 1.000. Still a very, very good player but not the HOF'er he was for half of 2018.

I will perceive him as the guy who carried us to 96 wins and a division title in a year that we were 1 game away from playing in our 2nd Wolrd Series.

What he does in the future will be what it will be.

I think his point is that there will be many in the fan base that will be expecting a lot out of him and he may not be ever as good as he was for those last couple months. Heck, even after having a not so great NLCS, there were many in the fan base getting after him.

I guess if there were going to do something like this, you just cross your fingers and hope they get good value even if you don't agree with the vision. I'm confident they did that, as I believe Yelich will have more value at this time next year and the prospect package the Brewers gave will have less. At least this is probably reversible if it doesn't work out. I love Yelich's contract, age, and all-around game, and I believe he will put up big numbers at Miller Park. Isn't Miami known for being harder on LHB's?

Not sure they can compete even with Yelich and Cain, but I do appreciate the fact that they're targeting much better all-around players. I think there are some intangibles you get from good base-running and patience at the plate and defensive versatility that still aren't fully captured by analytics, such as being able to do different switches and maybe carry 13 pitchers. I probably wouldn't have done this, but I love this roster make-up and will thoroughly enjoy watching them next year. Hopefully this means Braun to 1b and some rf.

Pina/Vogt

Thames/Braun

Villar/Sogard

Arcia/Sogard

Shaw/Perez

Yelich/Perez

Cain/Phillips

Phillips/Braun

Santana for prospects or a sp?

Eh, not a terrible take on the trade, but leaving Aguilar out looked awful for a while. Still not sold on him though.

The best stuff in this thread is HighHeat acting like an insider.

Yup. Last year will probably be the best offensive year of his career. His rate stats from the first half of last year were only slightly better than his career line, but still well above average. It's not a knock of Christian at all, he was simply hitting at a level that can't be maintained by anyone. All the bandwagon fans that jumped on around September are going to be disappointed that he's not prime Barry Bonds for all 162 games every year.

Then we would all celebrate it but there's probably a better chance that he is not and that he is just a really good player who got extremely hot.
