Yelich to the Brewers in exchange for Brinson, Isan Diaz, M. Harrison and Yamamoto

MVP2110
Has Yelich spoken publicly since the trade? I'd be curious to hear his thoughts.

Mightve missed it.

Yes, he did interviews at the fan fest event last weekend. He also did an interview with Barstool Radio that isn’t safe to post here, but you can find if you search for it on Twitter (warning, the host is extremely annoying, vulgar and lewd).

Par for the course with Barstool. They're awful.

My god...

Of course, the classic stereotype of "I've seen girls from Milwaukee!" And how terrible it must be to be traded from Miami to Milwaukee (though yes, I get it). Followed by "I've never been to Milwaukee."

I like Barstool. Granted they get a bit much at times but they don’t back away from calling things what they are or calling BS on certain things and I enjoy that. Yelich seems like a good dude though.

Gotta say, the thing I’m most excited about this year is to be able to watch Yelich. His swing is a thing of beauty and something we haven’t seen here in Milwaukee (besides Braun) in a very long time. He is a legit stud and he’s ours. Consider me drooling.

yes, with today's off day I had to look at how the former Brewer farmhands are doing that were shipped to Miami for Yelich...godawful starts across the board, with Yamamoto still yet to pitch. Too early to draw conclusions, but safe to say Marlins' brass is probably wishing for improvement quickly.

When you really stop to think that both Harrison and Diaz would've had to find their way onto Milwaukee's 40 man roster at some point before being subject to next year's Rule 5 draft, their value to the Brewers' organization probably looks alot smaller considering the pile of OF options, what appears to be a sustained opportunity for Villar to play 2B alot, and Hiura likely being their choice for 2B of the future - particularly when the Brewers were adding two MLB OFers to their roster for the next 5 years (1 in Yelich as part of the trade, the other with the pending Cain signing that was in the works as this trade came together).

I am honestly a little surprised the Marlins didn't get a little more from someone. Not that we didn't pay a good fair amount but there are about 28 other teams that could have used Yelich and his value is significant.

But didnt they get less quality for the other two better outfielders?

Yelich's contract is quite a bit more attractive, which makes him arguably more valuable than either.

Realize that, but with money to spend, would you rather have Ozuna?

Yelich is the player we are trying to move towards while Ozuna feels like the player we are moving away from.

I think you nailed it. We already have a younger, cheaper version of Ozuna in Santana, and they spent the whole offseason trying to dump him.

Other than, you know, Ozuna's Gold Glove defense.

I somewhat get the point, but Santana is at another level from Ozuna.

The question is whether or not one believes Ozuna's season from last year being a new version of him.

I'm using FanGraphs' defensive numbers just as a hand-wavy rating, of course they are not perfect:

Santana has always been really bad.

Yelich has basically been around average his whole career except for one bad year on FanGraphs.

Ozuna was a really good defender his first 2 years and now is just OK (a 0 Def rating on Fangraphs, give or take).

Career batting average

Santana: .262 (trending up)

Yelich: .291

Ozuna: .277 (trending up)

BB%/K%

Santana: (11.5%/31.5%)

Yelich: (10.6%/20.6%)

Ozuna: (7%/22.1%)

There are some aspects of Ozuna that are definitely trending toward Santana, but he's probably a bit closer to Yelich than to Santana.

All of that said, I'd take Yelich even with cost/control taken out of the scenario.

Oh yes, because Gold Gloves have always been based on defensive value

I mean, yeah, I get that Ozuna is a better defender. There really aren't many who are worse than Santana. But his higher cost does somewhat mitigate his defensive value in a straight up comparison to Santana, though.

Brinson: .156/.202/.272/.474

Woof.

The scary thing is that line is remarkably consistent for what he did in about 50 PAs for us last year.

You can't write a guy off as a bust after just a couple hundred ABs, but its looking more likely that the Brewers cashed in their Lewis Brinson trade chip just in time to get value.

Imagine if he didn’t hit [sarcasm]22[/sarcasm] home runs against us.

Brewers definitely reaping the early rewards on this trade so far. In addition to Brinson:

- Jordan Yamamoto pitched today for the first time all year in A ball

- Isan Diaz is hitting .197 for AA Jacksonville thus far in 147 AB's

- Monte Harrison doing ok for AA Jacksonville to this point - .251/.322/.440/.762 in 191 ABs

Get back to me in about two years.

That said, your are right that the early returns on Brinson are absolutely horrid.

And he's 24, so he's not even really young for getting a taste of the bigs.

I think this is a trade both teams will be happy with eventually. All three position players were raw and had questionable hit tools and were more long-term projects that a contending team might not have had room for. But in the end I believe their overall production, however it distributes betwern them, will be good enough to make the trade worth it for the Marlins
