Darvish

This off season is obviously different, but MKE has been played like this too much in the past for me not to think that way.

Why not drive up the price for the Cubs? Go up another $5M per season and play a game of chicken with the cubs. Ultimately they need him more than money they have and we can keep bidding, but they will raise. Heck offer him $32M per year for 4 years with a vesting 5th year based on performance. I bet the cubs would just stick up there paddle and yell "33M per year for 5 years"...

Pretty easy to suggest when it isn't your money.

Based on HH19's comment, its possible Darvish is getting impatient with preferred options and is considering the Brewers strongly.

Or Stearns is balking at the increased demands of the Rays and will just sign a starter.

Actually the easy thing to suggest is that we offer a ridiculous salary to get Darvish... We have a budget that needs to be kept.

The Cubs don't have a cap like the dodgers and have a weaker rotation now than last year which leaves them with minimal room to maneuver when someone goes down. So they are likely to go up up up until it hurts.

You just need to know where your hurt is compared to their hurt...

Darvish seems like a tool. Let’s just beat him in the playoffs.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I am worried the number of years and money it would take to sign Darvish.

For all angst some here had over giving Cain five years and potentially him not aging well, thus leaving the Brewers on the hook in years 4 or 5 for a declining or really declining player, Darvish very well could get 25-30 million per and at least five years, maybe six.

We hand out a contract like that and Darvish accepts it, that could be a franchise crippling decision if it goes badly via injury or quicker than expected decline. Even more so if it corresponded with him and Cain declining at the same time.

FWIW, I'd be excited if Darvish picked the Brewers, but it could also be the riskiest signing in team history given big money long term contracts to free agent pitchers can backfire badly.

FWIW hardball talk says Darvish wants to return to LA

I think this is 100% accurate. However, it doesn't appear they can clear the payroll to add him. Given this, it keeps the Brewers in play.

Dodgers are going to reset their tax, unless they dump Kemp or whoever they aren’t signing Darvish.

Dodgers must not want to give up the prospects to get a guy like Kemp off their payroll.

I completely agree with this, but I also trust Stearns 1000% not to put the franchise in such a bad spot.

I am so on board with a Darvish signing! He would be a difference making arm for this team. Even looking at next year’s free agent crop I am not sure there is a starting pitcher I would rather see the Brewers sign (other than obviously Kershaw which isn’t happening).
Not just “at Night” anymore.

Is this guy going to end up with a Greinke type contract ? Spending money is hard enough. Dead money or dead man walking for this team would be a death blow. At 31 you know he is gonna milk this last contract for all it's worth, and most likely whoever signs him will regret the money in 2 years and won't be able to unload him. Stearns seems like a guy that wants to keep the doors open in that regard.

If High Heat's guy did not come right out and say there is nothing going on but would get back to him later tonight....there is something to it...at least discussion of maybe upping the offer. Darvish would be sweet but ugh....if it doesn't pan out ....
