Is Stroman a possibility?

Ellsbury is very blah, but would be curious what else would be a part of the deal coming back from the Yankees.

The yankees writer who reported the rumor claims that Albert Abreu would be coming to Milwaukee. He was signed when Stearns was still in Houston.

This makes sense.

Eh. Elbow problems. Huge talent but scary.

I'm having a little trouble picturing what this deal could look like. He's got 3 years and 68 million left. It's an insanely terrible contract.

No, that is not what he said. The writer was doing pure speculation like any of us saying if Ellsbury was coming here we would get prospect(s) back for eating salary. Abreu was simply an example.

EDIT: I see he made an updated tweet saying Abreu was the rumored piece.

If it is Ellsbury, they would have to pay a large part of his contract. Why would we want to pay 20+ mil a year for the guy, when we could stick that $ into our own ACE? (Darvish this year, or a TOR next off season)

If Ellsbury is involved, there could be other moving parts as well. He may not end up in Milwaukee when all is said and done. The Brewers may just be one cog of a larger trade.

Just a guess.

Or possibly taking salary off the Yankees' hands and getting even more young talent for the future, to allow them to sign a major FA?

That would be a little disappointing to me - it would feel like Stearns acknowledging that the Brewers aren't likely to compete for a few more years yet - but that doesn't necessarily make it a terrible move (I mean what do I know?)

If they actually did get ellsbury, there’s no way the brewers are paying more than 20-30% of that stupid contract. Everything you said is true. If they are going to blow 60 million, they’d be better off doing it on any number of a handful of the free agents still available.

I'm having a difficult time seeing an Ellsbury move.

It would have to be way more than Abreau coming back because we would then have two horrible contracts in the OF when that is the only position where we are well stocked on the farm.

The whole point of trading Ellsbury for the Yankees is to free up salary. Trading him just to eat most of it doesn't make sense for them. Also doesn't make much sense for the Brewers as the huge salary coming here would weaken the return for a player we don't want or need.

Have to think if there's any truth to Jacoby it's designed for us to take on most salary in exchange for a good return of prospects.

Obviously the Yankees would love to find some team to pay ellsbury’s full salary, but that’s not happening. So for them, it’s a win at this point to find a team that will pay any percentage. He has no place on their team. If they were able to save 20%, then that’s 12 million they can spend on something else, as opposed to the zero + ellsbury that they have right now. The dude is the living embodiment of sunk cost to the Yankees.

......so the price is coming down.

No if you buy 10 items at $20 a piece or 5 items at $20 a piece the price doesn't come down same concept here.

Not the same concept. The right concept would be 5 good items at $20 a piece or 5 good items and 5 rotten items for $20 a piece. After you throw out the 5 bad pieces the 5 good pieces really just costed you $100 while option one it costs $50.

If the amount of years comes down the price is much better and allows the Brewers a chance to enter the race or at the very least a better chance. Lesser chance of rotten years. You are assuming all pieces are created equal and we know as you add more pieces(years) they become worthless.

Yu Darvish weighs in with this Tweet.

The headline says the Brewers are interested in Darvish.

That Yahoo Article (via translation) talks about the Brewers meeting with Darvish and confirms they offered a contract. It speculates it to be a 5 or 6 year contract.

To a 31 year old pitcher????

"Multiple" trades that are separate from this one are in place as well. Trades will happen dependent upon this (A.) move and possibly other free agent moves. Multiple trades are already agreed upon, but only to happen if (A) happens.

Interesting. Thanks for your updates.

The Ellsbury thing seems really hard to believe. Thinking about it more no way we would start him. Even if we trade any of Santana/Brinson/Phillips the other two are starting over old Ellsbury. That means we are either flat out releasing him or trading him(we just being a middle man). That would be purely a trade to gain prospects by using our payroll. Plausible idea, but seems doubtful to me.

Anything around Ellsbury would be a serious flurry of moves and they would have to go perfectly.

So maybe this means we deal Santana first and then turn around and trade for Ellsbury
