Big League Camp Invites

Hiura and Brady returned to minor league.

Hiura made a good impression and it sounds like he's on the fast track.

Hiura's ETA is 2019. He's likely a better hitter right now than all 3 of the 2B options. In a different era, back in 1974, Brewer brass realized in spring training that the kid, Robin Yount, was better than what they had at SS so he made the team at age 18. There was no arbitration years and control years to consider back then. Had there been, he probably would have a nickname other than The Kid. Molitor was a major league ready bat right out of University of Minnesota too and made the jump from Midwest League.

Yeah, if this kid proved he could play defense at a good rate, I would have no issue with saying screw it to the system and bringing him up mid-year. The ball just flat out flies off his bat. He is our next generational hitter for the organization. Will be fun to watch.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Barring injury or absolutely brutal defense at 2B this season, Hiura definitely appears to be in the mix for the 2B job in Milwaukee next spring - might be one of those June 2019 callups. Never a question about his offense, and any concerns about lack of power are more than offset by both his position and his ability to put the bat on the ball.

If we get to, say, June, and Hiura is tearing the cover off the ball in Biloxi, while the Brewers' three-headed 2B is scuffling, it is not completely out of the realm of possibility that Hiura could make the jump. He is 21, and was considered a very advanced college bat coming out last year. It isn't likely by any means, but if the team is playing well, and 2B is considered an upgradable spot, it could happen.

Of the non-roster guys brought in, Hoover looks like a near lock at this point and unless Miley gets blown up in his next start, he's at least 50-50.

Other veteran guys who've impressed are Bethancourt, Franklin and Liz.

I want no part of a Franklin reboot.

Remember what Yoda said:

"Cubs lead to Cardinals. Cardinals lead to dislike. Dislike leads to hate. Hate leads to constipation."

Sounds like Counsell liked Hiura's defense.

"He's had a really good spring," Counsell said. "The point for him was really to observe, but he also played very well -- not only hit well but played a good second base. He had a great camp, a great experience, and the trick for him right now is to go over there and realize that this is something to build on. Build on this."

From the talk around the brewers are still eyeing around for catching

Ryan Hannigan cut loose by CLE today if your interested for real cheap..

In-house options are just as good probably.

I'm excited about Hiura too, but let's wait and see how he does over an extended period of time in Carolina. Lots of guys flashed in ST. Yes, I hope and expect he'll keep hitting. But we need to see how he does over the long grind of a professional season.

There's a reason they signed Christian Bethancourt. My buddy who lives in Phoenix says he's looked pretty decent this spring. I'm much happier having him in AAA than Susac.
