Sign Moustakas, Trade Travis Shaw?

Tim Allen asked David Stearns about Shaw in a radio interview today, and Stearns' response was that he anticipates Travis Shaw being a Brewer for many years to come.

Shaw's not going anywhere this off-season.

I found it interesting that he hinted at a possible significant move this winter, but also hinted that it wasn't something being discussed in the media...

"Don't force him to choose between Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. It's like asking someone to choose between which STD to contract!"

You can take everything David Stearns says and throw it into a garbage can. It is meaningless...totally empty words. Maybe you are unfamiliar with how a GMs talk to the media, but they are not going to tell you anything negative or ever hint at specific moves.

They are not going to tell you who they are shopping or EVER tell you they don’t plan on having a player around long. They act like they don’t have to move players they won’t be retaining in 2 months when it is July.

They are going to deflect almost all media rumors. Their job is not to give us inside scoops.

I'm not as naive as you seem to think that I am... nor, I hope, am I as condescending as a few others here can be... (which, by the way, is why I post so infrequently)

I grew up reading the newspapers in Europe constantly make up stories about soccer players moving here or there, with 95% of it being entirely made up (something they still do to this day - just to sell newspapers or to get clicks online). Now that's cause for cynicism... The thing is, the same sort of rubbish goes on here, just to a lesser degree. Someone starts a rumour and everyone else reports it as fact.

Of course you are correct in that he's not going to tell us exactly what's really going on, but a GM will usually - as you say - deflect, not usually flat out lie.

If Stearns says that what's being reported isn't true and claims the opposite (as he has), then is shown up to be a liar shortly thereafter by trading Shaw away, I'll join you in your cynicism. For now I'll choose to believe him over some random "journalist" somewhere or the speculation of fans and armchair GMs...

When Stearns made similar remarks about Braun, everyone here called "BS" on him. I don't remember the timing of those remarks, whether they came before or after the non-trade to LA, but these days (and for some reasons that are very obvious to all of us) Braun seems rather likely to play out his contract in MIL.

I think most of us on here get "GM-speak." Doug Melvin's frequent use of "I'm not motivated to move him" (see: Richie Sexson, Lyle Overbay v1.0, etc.) is another familiar example, but it sure didn't mean he wasn't listening.

Deciphering GM speak is far from an exact science, but there are definitely takeaways from hearing what they have to say. Stearns generally doesn't comment on specific players. The most common thing I've heard from him is he's active on multiple fronts but nothing is one phone call away. He also made a comment to haudricourt implying that we likely won't make any enormous FA signings, I forget the exact quote. I buy most of that. If we did sign Darvish, he could easily say that the price came down to a point that was worth the investment. Either way, he's good at leaving wiggle room so he isn't downright lying to the media.

Adding Moustakas would be kind of weird in my book. The idea is that you can then use Shaw as a trade chip to land a good starting pitcher. But who is the starting pitcher that we land for Shaw? Stroman? Archer? deGrom?

Or perhaps there's a stud minor leaguer we could get for Shaw ... but again, who?

Anyone know who Dan Clark is? Is he reliable or just stealing what Bowden said?

Looks like a media guy in Baltimore, but I'm kind of wondering if he just took the rumors from yesterday and tweeted them out himself to make it look like he had some inside sources. That's just my hunch, as I still have a hard time believing that we'll end up with either Arrieta or Moustakas.

The idea of acquiring Moustakas and trading Shaw reeks of a Boras-planted rumor. While the Brewers certainly could deal Shaw and Santana given their lack of long-term success, players of their ilk and at their stage in the arbitration process are what successful small market teams are built on. If they were a year or two short of FA, this rumor would be much more plausible but short of the Brewers substantially "winning" a trade of either player, they will be at 3B and RF on Opening Day.

Just use the money to sign a starting pitcher if they have a hole in their pocket and have huge desire to waste a lot of money. Fangraphs has our 2018 roster at 25.4 WAR while the Cubs are 47.8

Any other plan makes no sense because teams aren't trading for Shaw the guy we view as an elite 3B, they are trading for a guy they will view as a decent player who just had a career year.

This smells like Boras using us to drive up his clients price.

What did Fangraphs have us at last year?

Probably an even larger difference.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave
